Rise and Progress ofNew Canaan,
Conn.,:from 1800 to 1871.
New Canaan is located five miles north
from Long Island Sound, and about an equal
distance fl‘Om Norwiilk,Darien, and Stem
ford, viz: from Norwalk, five miles in 9.
northwesterly direction, you reach its pleas-
ant village; frem Darien, in a northerly
Course, you will reach the same point; from
Stamford, in a no'rtheasterly direction eight
miles, you arrive at the same terminus. It
is connected with the New York and New
Haven road by a branch road to Stamford
It is a thrifty village, with three churches,
viz: Congregational, Methodist, and Epis-
copal, each having a neat and commodious
house of worship. It has seven stores,
with a choice selection of goodsfrom which
the people of this and surrounding towns
are supplied with all the necessaries and
fancy articles for their families. -
It‘ is also 'an equal distance from New
York and New Haven. And before diverg-
ing from 'the point I have in view, I will
speak of its healthfulness, from its beautiful
location, entirely free from all malaria of
every description, its pure water, its gentle
ridges running north and south for miles,
with good roads, giving to the eye the most
charming view of the surrounding country
that canbe found in the county or State.
Very few can equal it in its landscape, as
you travel south from the more northerly
partof the town. The original inhabitants
of the town were generally men of high
moral and religious culture, whose sons
wand daughters have many of them gone
"forth into the world, as I humbly trust, car-
:rying with them these principles inculcated
tunder the. paternal roof, to be the instru-
ments of good wherever their lot may be
cast. And now, having briefly hinted at
New Canaan, as a central point, its health-
fulness, good roads, pleasant scenery, and I
the character of its inhabitants, I proceed
to the point at issue. ,
l The first point which I shall consider,
will be its central location, as connected
with the manufacture of boots and shoes,
with its ’fame in manufacturing articles of
the best» and choicest qualities. ' I will not
exclude many other kinds of manufacturing
'which can be carried on here with equal ad-
'vantage, such as clothing, in all its various
Tbranches. Itis a desirable location for the
:manufacture of hats, either of straw or other
:material and many others, whose water pow-
«er is not indispensably requisite. I have
:stated that New Canaan was a central point.
(Our goods are taken from our doors by
s’Adam’s Express Co., and shipped to any
3point east, west, north or south. We are
within an hour and a half of New York,
tthe' great centre of the continent. Let us
now turn our thoughts backwards seventy.
years, at about which time the manufacture
of boots and shoes commenced; It was
shoes mainly, that was manufactured at: that
time. Commencing here in a small way at
first, by Mr. Hoyt, about the year 1800, and
soon afferby one or two others, first by pur-
chasing two or three sides of leather, d
making it Up and proceeding to New rk
by sloop. which at that time was the only
mode of travel, except they set themselves
astride their horse in winter, with the bag
and portmanteau, to sell their goods to the
retaildealers located in Water, Pearl, and
Chatham streets, and purchase more materi-
als. From this starting point the increase
'was gradual, until about the year 1818, when
one of the manufacturers commenced selling
ggoods in Savanuah and Augusta, Ga. This
gave quite an impetus to his business, which
gradually increased until about 1822 or'3,
wheelie extended his business into Virginia,
and soon. after into North and South Caro-
lina, Alabama, Lonsiana, and ’ Mississippi.
At about this period other manufacturers lie?
gun to extend; their business. From the
success thus far, progress became generally
- diffused among ‘the manufacturers; their
'. business extended, employing what then
:seemed to be a large number of operatives,
: and their sales amounting in the aggregate
'.to a large ambuu't. The character and style
cof the goods manufactured up to this period
. were of good quality and substantial, giving
no .the consumer great satisfaction, so much
ad,- tthat people when coming into market to
get film supplies would make the inquiry
for ceflafin manufacturer’s shoes, and would
not purchase those _of inferior quality, if not
to be bad. So great was their confidence
in the 'chara'mfif these goods, that inquir-
ies were mad.‘ for twenty or thirty years af-
ter, and possibly to the present time.
Abont_1834 or 3.15, manufacturers began: to
enlarge upon their styles and varieties, ex-
tending into the finer qualities and fancy ar-
ticles demanded by the trade. which were
called for from the larger towns and cities
throughout our extended country. In this
department also, havo they been eminently
successful, requiring the most skillful mc-
chanics to bring to perfection the fitting of
the foot neatly, combined with a finish so ar-
tistic as to satisfy the most: tastidious.
Such has been the demand, and still is,
that goods in this department, as well as in
.staple goods, where due care is taken in the
:manufacture, using the best of material and
t the best mechanics to, produce them, there is,
:and ever will be a healthy demand, and may
‘.be sold to'an unlimited extent. I have thus
lbrought to view some of the leading facts of
theme and progress of New Canaan from

The death _of the son of Captain Henry I.
Sturges is a painful affliction. He slipped
on the ice on the sidewalk Monday allernoon,
and fell striking on his forehead. No bruise
was made by the fall, and he spent the eve--
ning in company with some friends. Tues-
day morning he awoke with a pain in his
head, and the family physician ,was called
to attend him. He complained much of his
heap and the doctor was sent for a second
time, and just as he arrived, about eleven
o‘clock the same evening, the. young man
died. He was about 15 years of age!
New York architects, have made plans
for a new church for St. John’s society,
Bridgeport. The building will be 153 feet
long and 98 feet wide, and will be, when
completed, the finest church in Connectictit.
It will be built of excellent blue. stone,
trimmed with Ohio and brown stone. It
will have several spires, and the principal
one, 200 feet in height, willcontain a clock
and a chime of bells. The front of the church
is to be tastefully ornamented with statues,
bas reliefs, etc.
The twent second annual ball of Excel-

place at Franklin all, on Tuesday evening

Rev. D. A. Boston tenderedaresi ation
of his pastorate of the West Street ongi-e-
gatiOnal church, on Sunday last. He was
led to this step by ill-health, from which he
has suffered some little time, and which has
rendered his ministerial duties painful and
difficult. The resignation was accepted by
the church, and Mr. Easton'soon leaves for
a sea voyage. . '

TO GO TO FLORIDA IN WINTER.
HAVING for the last thirty-five years devoted my whole
time and attention to the study of lung diseases and con-
umption, I feel that I understand fully the course that
ought to be pursued to restore a tolerably bad case of
diseased lungs to healthy soundness. The first and most

Enterprise are located there. I should give a decided
reference to Mellonvllle: It Is two milcs from river or
e. and it seems almost impossible to take cold there.
The tables in Florida might be better, and ntients com-
plain at times; but that Is a good sign. as t indicates a
return of appetite: and, when this Is the case, they [sen-
erally Increase in flesh, and then the lungs must: lieu .
Jacksonville, Hibernia, Green Cove, and many other
places in various parts of Florida can be safely recom-
mended to consumptives in winter. My reasons for say-
ing so ure,‘that patients are less liable to take coldthere
than where there is a less even temperature : and it is
not necesshry to say, that, where a consumptive person
exposes himself to frequent colds, he is certain to die
shortly: therefore in advice is. go well down Into the
State, out of the reac , of prevailing cast winds and fogs.
Jacksonville, or almost any other of the localities I have
named, will benefit those who are troubled with a torpid
liver, a disordered stomach, deranged bowels, sore throat,
or cough ; but, for those whose lungs are diseased, a more
southe point Is'camestly recommended.
For Eileen years Iglor to 1869, I was rofesslonnlly In
New York, Boston. altlmore. and 1’ ladelphla every
week, where I saw and examined on an average five
hundred patients a week. A practice so extensive, em-
bracing every possible phase of lung disease, has enabled
me to understand the d sense fully ; and hence my caution
in regard to taking cold. A person may take vast quanti-
ties of “ Sclismk‘s I’ulmonic S rup, Seaweed Tome, and
Mandrake Pills." and yet the it he does not avoid taking
cold. .
In Florida. nearly everybody ls ustn _ Sclienck‘s Man-
