Union Republican State Convention.
. The State Convention of the Union Republican
Par of Connecticut. will be held in New Haven, in
Mus c Hall, on WEDNEIDAY, the 25th of JAN U-
ARY. at 10'o’clock, a. m. The several towns in the
State are requested to send delegates, equal to twice
the numb-r of re resentatlves to which each town
. is entitled in the eneral Assembly, to nominate a
ticket for State Ofilcers, to choose a State Committee
and to do any other business proper to be done by
said Convention.
State and national legislation have been controlled
by the Union Republican party during the meet me-
mentuous ten years of modern history. No nation
can parallel the record. A gigantic rebellion has
been sup rcssed; four million of slaves set free;
, on moderate terms.

Pub. Office of the Herald, in Norwalk; or,
if that was impracticable, desiring Messrs.
F & G to recommend some. suitable person
with whom they could negotiate, to come
and re-establish the paper there. My em-
ployers proposed that I should go, but be-
ing young, (under twenty years) and being
wholly destitute of pecuniary means, I hesi-
tated, but was strongly urged, and assistance
offered me in getting up an office. I con-

But we let the Judge narrate his own funny
experiences, and the manner in which he be-
came entirely cured of all pmbition to “ run
a newspaper.” We shall not be surprised
to see “history repeat itself,” in this,~as in
other matters here in Norwalk:

THE GAZETTE’S HISTORY.
To obtain a correct and detailed narrative
of the origin, establishment and progress of
‘ the GAZETTE, has been,witli us, the effort of
many years. We have made every research
possible, and with minute care. We think
we may now furnish it as an important part
of the history of Norwalk. We shall give
below the “recollections" of three of its for-
mer owners and editors, as furnished by
themselves, and then correcting their slight
inaccuracies, (which we are able to do from
. our files) where their memories have been
at fault. We secured'thc statement of MB.
PRICE, (who, with MR. NICHOLs as his part-

the feeling so encouraging at Norwalk, that
I issued proposals for the GAZETTE. Subsc-
quent circumstances, coupled with a desire
not to hazard my employer’s interests too
far, induced me to form a co-partnership
with Mr. ROSWELL S. NICHOLS, of Bridge-
port, and the first number of the NORWALK
GAZETTE, was issued in May, 1818,by NICH-
OLs & PRICE. '
One circumstance of this period I shall
not probably forget,whilc life lasts. When
I had landed at Norwalk with my portion
of the materials, and had paid all expenses,
freight, etc, I had just five dollarsleft in my
pocket, and owed, in addition, between two
some three or four hundred dollars, in
amount, if I recollect aright. The “consid-
eration,” for our endorsement being, that it
should be kind to the Democracy. A Mr.
Hubbell, at Greenfield Hill, leaned the mon-
ey. I should here state, as my most satis-
factory experience with any Nomalk news-
paper, that fln’s note was paid without call-'
ing upon the endorsersl Williston,conduct—

go to New York, as the publisher of the
Evangelist, Ithink, selling it in turn to his
apprentice boy, James Reed. It was pretty
generally understood, that Doctor, (now
Judge) Butler was in it with Reed, sub rose,
and filrnished most of the editorials and
funds, but be this as it may, after two or

tion of our readers, leaving them flee to
draw their own inferences. It seems, as near
as we can learn the facts in the case, that
the Ladies’ Aid Society'of this- church ap-
pointed one of their regular meetings at the
parsonage on that evening, and that the at-
tendance of members of the church and con.

church, who has been known to take a hand

In pursuing this interesting investigation.
we have been much aided by sundry of our
aged citizens, some of whom “still continue,”
and link us to the generations of “ye olden
glances at the period, in later years, I have
almost trembled at the assurances then enl
tertaincd, and have wonderecfiar less at the
earnest interceptions of my more immedi-
ate friends against the undertaking. Still, 1'
owe a life—long gratitude to my employers,
(Messrs. Flagg & Gray), and other friends
who sustained me in it. ~
The first office of the GAZETTE was in the
second story of the building at the S. E. cor-
ner of the old bridge, the lower story of
which was occupied by Messrs. A., & N.»
who left it for the ministry, when J. U. Am-
idon, a brother-in-law to P. T. Barnum,
came here and bought it. Amidon kept it
but a short time, and sold it to me, and I
placed it in the hands of my then Probate
office Clerk, George Taylor. Taylor’s pc-
cuniary fate in running it was about the
same as all his predecessors, and he was un-
able to reimburse the amount I had paid
Amidon. But, I well remember, that I had
some $1600 or $1700 of book accounts, ‘sup-
posed to be good,” of which, however, I had
and thirty dollars and fifty cents. The pas-
tor feclingly owned up to the surprise, but
stood his ground manfully, disdaining to
call in the pelice. The assault was an ag-
gravated one, but it is generally conceded
that the pastor got the best of it, unless
viewed in the light that it is “more._blessed
to give than to receive.” After the encoun-
ter with the pastor, Mrs. Simmons was mol-
ified with a piece offering of a handsome sil-
ver cake basket, complete harmony was re-
