We have all heard _a‘ good many: but this
one is too good and' too true to lose.

I know that it is true, for Goggs told me
so himself, and Goggs is a Professor in a
Theological. Seminary; his hair is a little
gray, and he wears spectacles; he preaches
sermons at Inaugurations, and Dedications,
end Installations, and Celebrations, and An—
niversaries, and Thanksgiving Days and
Funerals, and on a great many other pleas.

ity, and writes his name with a D. D. So,
ofcoursc, the story must be true. ' '

When it happened, Goggs was not a Pro-
fessor in a Theological Seminary. He had
never lectured on Total Depravity. He had
never preached at an Inauguration, or a
Dedication, Or an Installation, or Celébra-
tion, or Anniversary, or Thanksgiving Day.
or Funeral. '

He was a little curly-haired college boy,
seventeen years old. He was a first-rate
“first-catch," and the best “grasshopper" in
the Gymnasium. ' ‘

He could lie sheep into the President’s
chair, and hide the Janitor's matches, and
'put a cow in the chapel belfry, and stick in
e ventilator three hours and a half, to‘hcar

' what was going on in a secret Society that
he didn‘t belong to. ' He knew how to put
the Undertaker's sign on the Dodtor's door,
and lager-beer advertisements in the minis-
ter's hat; he knew how to haze Freshmen
and dodge policemen, and trip a tutor in a
“Rush ;" he knew how to translate Virgil,
end—a ‘llttle—Anabasis.

He could prOmpt and "skin," nine times
out often without being found out, and the

‘ tenth time apologize for it with such a story
I from Punch that the Professor had to laugh
-land consequently to forgive him. Every-
body forgave him, cverybody bare with
him. . The worse he behaved, the better
everybody liked him. At least that was the
case with the Professor, and'that seems to
be how he came to have the skeleton. It
certainlycouldn’t have been on account of
the marks against his name in the anatomi-
cal class-books which ran somewhat like
this :— I

It certainly couldn’t have been becaus

the Profbssor had any reason to think he
would take good care of it,—for Goggs ncv-

er took care of anything. - And the Profes- .

sor thought more of that skeleton than he
did—at least the boys said see—than he did
of his wife,lor his pew at chapel (ithad cush-
ions), or his ten children, or his silk hat. So
you can easily: see that he must have
thought a great deal of the skeleton. How-
ever, they are generally those; of us who do
serve the least and get: 'thc .most in this
world, and «he fact remains, that when the
Professor wentto New York to deliver an
address before the Society for Vivisectiug
Etherized Rabbits, Goggs had the skeleton.

“ You had better hang it up in a dry.
roomy p ," said the Professor, after the
lecture on the Cerebellum. He looked the
horrid thing allover regretfully, and tender-
ly stroked its empty skull. “ I think you
will quitHuite'enjoy it," said the Profes-
sor; be wiped his spectacles a little." “1

. The Professor looked lonely, trudging

away with his carpet-bag to his ctherized,

rabbits. Goggs felt sorry for him. 'He took
the skeleton carefully to his room, and care-
fnlly hung it up in his closet. Goggs room-
ed on’ the fourth story ‘of “ North Middle,"

The bolster was easy, but Goggs wasn’t-

yard on a Sunday night. A half-light crawl:
ed in through the door,——Goggs had the
“dark room” that term, he and his chum
having tossed coppers for it, and there ,was'
'no window. The bright dimnCSs ordim
brightness of a moon, away round some:
where on the eastern side of the colleges,
with difficulty outlined his bed-posts and
bureau. A heavy shadow folded in the closet
door. Goggs wondered if his chum were.
asleep, and called,—for the fun of the thing;
it is always fun to wake your chum up in
the middle of the night, and see how cross
you can make him,—“I sa—y them—DIOR 1”
But Dick was very sound asleep; Dick
made no answer at all. _ ~
There was no Usc in denying it; Goggs
wanted some live company. He felt uncom-
Ghost stories, grave stories, ghoul
stories, came into his thoughh—all that he
had ever heard. Ghostly, gasping, gurgling
faces—all that he had ever seen—crowded
before his eyes. All the dreadful words in
the vocabulary that begin with G, occurred
to him. He remembered all the anatomical
lessons and therleclures in the dissecting
room, as he had never remembered them'bc-
fore. He wondered who that fellow was,
behind him there, before he lost his uriclcs,
and ventricles, and muscular syst: 1n, and
cartilage, and cuticle, and all the rest of it;

murderc r, and whether he lied ever belonged
to a Presbyterian church, and how much be
cost, and whether he had room enough in
the closet, and if he were particular about
how he was treated, and— . _
Goggs was not asleep; not quite; and not
quite but almost he heard a noise in the
closet. A slight tumbling, scratching noise,
and then, a tremendous noise, and then——
upon Goggs’s word and honor—before he
could stir, or speak, or think, that closet door
bounded open, and the, dead man leaped
upon him.

Goggs sprang, but it was too late; he
struck out bravely with ’2 his two fists, and
they went through under two thigh sockets
that held them fast; the horrid creature
doubled itself about him; . it entangled him
in its ribs; it rasped his cheeks with its ver-
tebra); its long fingers clutchcd_ him; with
ilium, and sacrum, and pelvis, and breast-
bone, and collar-bone,and frontal-bone, and
parietal, andall the other bones that Goggs
got ciphers for, the . thing rattled horrible
music about him, and laughed long and loud
and triumphantly . .

The laugh came through the closet wall!
It was that scoundrcl Dick.

“'1 say, Goggs l Who poured boiling water
into my wash pitcher last week? Who set
my alarm 00' at two o’clock in the morning,
the week before, and the Week before that?
Who put mice into my boots, and red pep-
per into my lemonade, and brounbt me Ed-
, wards on the Will for a pony nu Nenop: on ?
How about that little bill from Taylor’s
painted off on the last quarter ? Who cats
my piece of coconnut piecvcry time he’s
late at club? _ Who may consider himself
quits, and paid up, and well off, and easy at
that, and take a chair and sit by the win-
dow, and think of it? Who .9” ,

Goggs, with ' his head half-way, up the
skeleton’s back-bone, heard this through the
ribs distinctly. - . ,

. He crawled out under the arm-pits with-
out any remarks. Cheerfully, he heard or
seemed to hear the Professor shy, “ I have
found this specimen to be excellent com-
pany, Goggs,—exccllent company.”

too, needs a little manipulation ; uncon-
scious Goggs goes to sleep with the door——
inst—fastened, with the skeleton—jum—
hanging behind it. One good blow from
Dick’s side of the dead man, sends nail,
skeleton, door, and ail,_in and down togeth—
er. Excellent. _
