' The sun never shone on a fairer day than
Christmas. The air was clear and bracing

3' but not extremely cold, and every object in
nature seemed ready to smile in reply.
Those who had anticipated sleigh-rides

could not but have been agreeably disap«
pointed in experiencing instead those pleas-
- ures that a green Christmas always brings.

The church services were well attended
and we have, no doubt, many happy hearts
blessed .the return of this great. annual festi-
val.

At Christ Church the evergreen decom-
tions were very fine; less in number than
on many occasions, but tas’ty.’ and com-
plete. 0n and over the altar were the fol-
lowing inscriptions in Medieval and Old
English text :-+“Thou art the King of Glo-

. ry, 0 Christ,” and»“Med_itator." Surmount-
ing the whole way, “The Lamb of God."
Crowds attended the services, and the mu-
sic was line. At ‘Memorial Church the
decorations were most beautiful. The fea-
ture being an' arch in ecclesiastical design
and finish. - Trees, boughs and festoons be-

ing in abundance, showing to that fine ad-

V'ifntage which is always seen in buildings
with high arched roofs. The decorations
were under the direction of Mr. John S.
Jones whose cultivated taste in such mat-
ters is the result of long years of study and
experience. The music was exceeding fine.

. At a regular communication of. Temple
lodge No. 65. F. and A. .M., Wm. J. Fitch
was elected W. M.,Bernard Cravagan, SW.
0. W. Hotchkiss, J. W., F. C. Foote, Treas-
urer, E. M.. Lees, Secretary, and Robert
Snagg, Tyler. The installation of ofllcers
will take place in a few weeks.

On Saturday, the' sloop C. H. Philips
come up the river as far as Wright’s Island.
but owing to accumulated ice was compell-

‘ ed to turn about and take moorings at Sta»
plas’ lower dock, where she will probably
remain during the Winter. The harbor may
be considered as closed.

It is stated that the Society of Good
Templars are effecting good and substantial
work in this village. Quite a number of
those known- to be habitually inclined to in-

. dulge in “ things of a fluid nature,” have
lately been induced to join and relinquish
an indulgence in that which is foolishness

' The fair and festival of the ladies of
Christ church at National Hall, on Thurs-
day evening last was a success, the receipts
amounting to $175. The Sunday school
children received presents of books,bon-bons
and toys, from a fine Christmas tree, and
“much good cheer” prevailed over oysters,

stupendous strides. Still, Sam sauntered

space, spied Seraphina, sitting solus, simper-
ing sweetly. So Sam stammered, “ Servant, .
sweet Seraphina)’ She seemed sentiment-
ally satisfied. So Sam, seeing Seraphina’s

soon, “Sweet splendid." Somehow, speech
seemed scarce. Sam’s syntaxsloped. Ser-
aphina‘s silvery syllables seampered shame-
t‘acedly. Sitting silently, Sam stroked Sam’s
shins ;_ Seraphina stroked Seraphina’s seven
shilling, silk; stupid silence! , Seraphina
sighed, Sam Stubbs sighed. Soon, she said
solemnly, “Surely, sentimental souls seek
sympathy, surely, Samuel, sadness some-
times steeps sympathetic souls.”

Some single souls see some slight severity
sprinkling Seraphina's speech. Should such4

General Sherman’s Pallet-ea. ' _
At the annual dinner of the New Eng-
land Society of New York, on the 22nd
inst., General Sherman made a speech, in
which he gave his pedigree thus :—

“Gentlemen, my father and mother were
both New England born. I learned from
books alone, that in 1634, 14 cars after the
Pilgrim Fathers landed at P ymouth Rock,
three persons of the name of Sherman reach-
ed the Boston coast [applause]; the Rev.
John Sherman; his cousin, John Sherman._
who was styled the Captain; and his broth-
er, Samuel Sherman. The Rev. John Sher-
man and the other cousin settled at Water
town, Mass, and it is related of the Rev.
John Sherman that he preached a sermon
under a tree there. Samuel Sherman, a
young man, about 14 years of 'age; and ad
venturous, emigrated to Connecticut. Sam-
uel Sherman was the ancestor of my branch
of the family, and settled at Stratford, Con-
necticut, and lived there fifty years after
reaching his home. He married and had
children, and his second son John Sherman
”adopted the legal profession. [Laughter]
That John Sherman had another son John
who had a son Daniel Sherman, a man of
note in his day, a cotemporary of Roger
Sherman, and a member of the Council of
Safety and the Legislative Assembly. His
'onungcst child, Taylor Sherman, settled at
orwalk, Conn. was Judge of the Probate
Court, and was one of those who lost prop-
erty by Arnold’s descent upon the coast of
Connecticut. He alsmwas one of those who
inherited part .of .the land which the State
of Connecticut donated in the Western Re-
serve. and was one of those who went to
the West to arrange n. treaty—with the In..
dlans; In l808 he returned to Connecticut.
He went out again in 1808 and made a par-
~tilion of the tire-lands. His son, my father,
the“ a l'mnmman of 20 years, married Mary
Hoyt at Norwalk‘,"uoun.-,~1-.raeio,and their
families still live there. My father went to
Loweastle, Ohio. followed by to mother
and her. child, on horseback. Tirat child
was my brother, Judge Charles Sherman of
Ohio. I was the sixth child. Our father
died and left us all very bare. [Laughton]
But friends came up and assisted us, and we
all reached maturity, and we all married,
and the number of children we' had I really
cannot keep on counting. [Cheers and
laughter] Gentlemen the Shermans are at
numerous family, and I may safely assert
that they all obeyed the Divine command-
ment—they went forth, increased-and multi-
plied [laughter], and I hope they have done
their share toward replenishing the earth.
