Painting on Marble.
The art of painting on marble in durable
colors, it"ever known, has. been. lost. For
years past, Dr. Asa Hill, of N orwalk, Conn.
has been experimentin in this matter, and
with the aid of Mr. . R. Miller, a well-
known artist of this city, has at last brought
the art, if not to perfection, at least so near
it that ultimate success is no longer doubt-
ful. Yesterda we were shown at Mr. Mil-
ler’s studio in odsworth’s building, Broad-
way, some thirty specimens of painting on
marble—figures, landscapes and marine
pieces—which in brilliancy of color were
equal to oil-paintings. The pigments once
fixed are permanent, and cannot be injured
by the action of the atmosphere, water or
by acids. ‘ If desirable, the surface of the
marble can be polished.
The colors used in painting on marble
are mixed neither in oil nor in water. The
method Of preparation is at present the se-
cret of the inventor. Nor can the ordinary
brushes be used in laying on the colors.
This at first presented an almost insul-
mountablc difficulty, but, like all others, it
was overcome, and a substitute for a brush
was found in a material-which at first sight
would seem but little'likely to be available
for such a purpose. The chief diflieulty,
however, was the fading and change of the
colors first used. Blues turned into greens,
' yellows into blacks, and browns into red-
dish purples. This diflic-ulfy has been al
most entirely surmounted, and now, with
the exception of a strong permanent green,
all other colors have been obtained.
No effort has yet been made to introduce
this new branch of art to the public, though
it is thought that the permanency of the
colors and the little liabitity to decay of the
material on which they are spread, will ren-
der marble paintings very desirable for the
decoration of entrance halls of public and
private residences, and also Rn monuments.

round itself what it wants. The surroun-
ding ocean holds in solution knowledge,
leasure. meat, drink wit, wisdom, friends,
owers, God; and out of this wealth we
secrete our shells,—clam-shells or nautilus-
shells, as we are clams or nautiluses, we
find‘what we crave,'—fun, if we haves zest
for the funny; friends, if we long for friends;
beauty, if we love beauty; thought, if we
tend to thought. Slowly we build up our
house. Small or large, if wee-re refined, it is
refined; if we are roomy,_if is roomy.
Roomy I There is one house, at 1east,——how
dear it is.in the recollection of'many l—which
moderate in dimensions, full, apparently, l
with the family itself, the means of its own-
ers very moderate, gasping for a fresh coat
of paint, is yet the center of a more cordial,
beaming hospitality than almost any other
in Massachuctts. The miracle of the wid-
ow’s cruse is every-day common-piles: there
and extend its marvel not mercy to the Oil
and meal, but to the tea, the butter, the-car-
pet, the beds. Ifthe chairs. in: out, some
thing‘turu , into a chair. the table is too
short, an ironing-boardtransfofms itself into
another leaf. If the rooms are all occupied,
a meal one builds itself out,—1aths, plasters
and dries itself on the spur of the moment,
and; no cold take. "The generous, hos ble 3
hearts of the inmates efi‘ect all. Every- thing I
is plain—food, furniture, services. but the 3
large, sunny natures of the family crave
being happy and making. others happyzand
so, on an income whicha. like number of
other: would think doomed them to shot
up the front Mike in the back part of the
house, those, people contrive to keep open
all round to sun and air and friend and
books and flowers.
But one may say, My heart isnot large
enough for that sort of thing, I am anx-
ious and troubled about many things,—
fastidious, dust-haunted.k as sensitive to criti-
cism as a raw wound to acid. Very likely.
Then you will notbuild that kind of a house.
You will fhshion something in which if
there is less hilarity, there will, at least, be
less dust; if less'eouversation variety of pea- .
sons and ideas: huddle of books, prints, flow- I
ers,at least fewer cracked teacups, more
kinds of cake, better-preserved. carpets.
You will get what you wannnof what some
other person wants, You. are-a magnet of
a. specific kintk Thingswhich you are fitted
to draw will y. towards you, and sick to
you. Glue. pitch, varnish,—nene of these
things, lay. hold on to, and keep fast, their

proceeding on the part of I r. Koenig, of
Davenport, who agreed to commit sui-
cide if his wife would, and while she reso-
lutely held her head under water until dead ,
lifted his above the surface, and subsequent-
.ly emerging entirely, coolly arranged for
her obsequies.
The Commissioner of Mining Statistic
gives the product of precious metals in the
United States last year at $63.500,000, dis-
tributed' thus: California, $20,000,000; Ne-
vada, $14,000,000; Oregon and Washington
Territory, $4,000,000; Idaho, $7,000,000;
Montana, $12,000,000 ; Colorado and Wyom-
ing,$4,000,000; New Mexico, $500,000;
Arizona, $1,000,000; others sources ,$1,000,

A party of respectable Chicago ladies
have formed a society for reclaiming young
men, and they go about the streets nights
and pick up young men who show signs of
dissipation, invite them to their houses and
treat them to ice cream, chicken salad, 65c,
and let them go home sober. As the result,
it is reported that half the yong men in town
lie around the streets nights to be taken in.
One dark night, not long ago, a burglar en-
tered a private residence in sixth avenue,
New York. On ascending one flight of
stairs he observed alight in a chamber, and
while hesitating what to do, a large woman
sudden] descended upon him, seized him
by the t roat forced him down through the
- hall and pushed him into the street before
he had time to think. “Heroic Repulse ofa
Burglar by a woman,” was the way the sto-
oppeared in the newspapers next day.

—A steward on an Ohio river steamer
was addressed by an uneasy and excited in-
dividual who wanted him to put somebody
off the boat. The candidate for a forcible
disembarkation was pointed out, but the
steward could see nothing out of the way.
