WESTPORT.
In the last issue of the GAZETTE your cor-
respondent “Patti” states that a“well-known
and regular old soaker,” in Westport, “has
left oli‘ drinking in a measure.” Can it be
that the term "regular old soaker" was in-
tended for a person who lives near the house
of “Paul" and who used to disturb the si-
lcucc of that unusually quiet neighborhood,
bv blowing a “fish-horn” several times a
day anti sometimes in the night? Curiosity
has been somewhat excited by the announce-
ment, as persons, and we in particular, feel
deeply interested in the temperance welfare
of the “fish-horn” individual. Whoever the
“regular old soakcr” may be, the fact speaks
.well for the influence of Eastern Star Divis-

DARIEN.
The Organ Concert, on Wednesday eve-
iiing,will be the “event of the season." The
programme embraces some fine selctions for
the Ogan, by Mr. Gibson, and good singing
by the Not-walk Choral Union ‘members,thir-
ty voices. Persons from Norwalk desiring
to attend can drive over, or accompany the
Union on the train, returning on the evening
express which will stop at Darien for their
accommodation.

BRIDGEPORT.
A dangerous obstruction to navi ation
has been discovered by George W. tiller,
the submarine diver, about four miles and a
half southeast of Bridgeport Light. Mr. F.
was cruising in that vicinity looking for a
vessel loaded with coal, which is known to
have foundered while trying to reach Black
Rock harbor, and discovered the two masts
ofa schooner just even with, or but a. few
feet below, the surface of the water. He at
first supposed the vessel to be the one he
was in search of, but on going down he dis-
covered her to be loaded with corn. The
schooner stands upright on the bottom, and
in a very dangerous position. The Condi-
tion of her cabin, which was also examined,
indicated that her crew had left her in the
most hurlied manner. The schooner is sup-
posed to have been run down sometime in
August last, by an eastern-bound steamer.
The members of the East Bridgeport Con-
gregational Choir have formed themselves
into a regular musical organization, the ob-
j ect of whish is to furnish music on all occa-
sions for the benefit of the church and soci—
ety to which they are attached.
We are glad to know that our city fath-
ers have appointed a committee to examine
into the working of the stone-crushing ina-
cliines now in use in various places. We
have known one of these machines in a
city in this State, where it has been used for
nearly a year with good effect. Next to a
solid pavementthere is no_ doubt that bro-
ken stone makes -thc best street, and the
manner in which it has been put on in the
case spoken of has proved its value and its
cheapncss.

In the Bridgeport City Court, on the 4th
inst. the case of H. E. Green, charged with
' adultery, was brought up. The evidence
showed that Green hired a room on Main
street, several weeks since, to be occupied,
as he stated when he hired it, by himself
and wife for lodgings, while their meals
were taken elsewhere. The room was let,
and for a number of, weeks was occupied
according to the conditions of the contract.
The testimony also showed that the woman
who passed as Mrs. Green was actually the
wife of a. man named Lent, her husband be-
ing present in court and testifying to the
fact. He stated they were married in Port-
Chcstt-r in 1864, and that in May last his
wife left his home taking the cars at Nor—
walk and having her trunk checked to
Bridgeport. Since the proceedings in the
above case commenced she has left the city
and her-present whereibouts is not known
to her husband. The court held that in
view of the evidence adduced there could be
no doubt the accused was living in adulter-
ous intercourse, as alleged, at the time the
complaint was made, and he was according-
ly found guilty and held for trial in the Sn-
perior Court, on the third Tucsd-iy of the
present month, the amount of bail being fix-
ed at $700. The bond was given by Mr.
' George Turney and Green walked out of
Court.
The Bridgeport school Committee are
about making repairs on the public school
on Prospect streeI to the amount of $9.500,
giving accommodations in the whole build‘
ing for 1,059 children.

were capsized by a squall. Three of them
attempted to swim ashore, and two of them
succeeded, after being in the water half an
hour, but the third, an Englishman,aged 24,
a widower, and employed in the brass works
in East Bridgeport, was drowned. His body
was recovered, and the man who clung to
the boat was saved.
A survey of the Housatonic riveris about
to be made by Capt. Edwards, civil en in-
eer of Bridgeport, under order of Gen. ar-
ren, engineer-in—chief of this department.
Gen. Warren intends to commence the im-
provements in that river, for which an ap-
propriation was made by the last Congress.

P. ’T. Barnum, Esq.. will deliver a lecture
entitled “Health, Happiness and Independ-
ence,” at Bethesda Chapel, on Tuesda eve-

ion, Sons of Temperance.

Daniel H. Sterling, will give a ball, their
first public entertainment of the kind, on the
17th of Noveamen—Standard.

The Advocate advocates changing the
time of their town meeting for the trans-
action of the-annual business, as the elect-
ion or town officers which is now held on
the same day conflicts with the proper
transaction Ol'said business. We of N orwalk
saw the inconvenience of that long ago, and
matte the desired change. On Monday a.
large batch of important business was hur-
ried through with as follows :—

Justices of the Peace was voted down.
A resolution to accept the layout of a
highway near Heckut’s Hill was passed, and
the Selectmen instructed to proceed with
the work, cost not to exceed $1,200.
The petition of Hiram Curtis to change
the highway near the John Holly bill
passed, the cost not to exceed $800.
The petittion of J. L. Lot:kwood anti oth-
ers to lay out and work a highway from
the Stillwatcr road to Summer street was
passed, and the Selectmen directed to work
the road. The owners of the land to be
used agreed to give it without cost.
The petition of Floyd T. Palmer and oth-
ers for an appropriation to reduce “Dana’s
Hill” was granted, the cost ,not to exceed
$500.
At the suggestion of Selectman Scofield,
it was voted to divide the town into as
many “r"ad districts” as there was Assess?
or’s, and that a suitable man be employed
in each district to attend to working the
roads, two-thirds of the work in each year
to be done by July 1.
A tax of SEVEN mills on a. dollar was laid
on for the ensuing year.
The Catholics of Stamford, under the di-
rection Rev. Fathers Fagan and Gafi‘ncy,
are‘making extensive preparations for their
second annual Fair, to be opened in Scely’s
Hall on Thursday evening Oct, 13th, anti

Woman’s Work For Chlldren.
While study women are clamoring in
their Conventions for their “right!" and for
an enlargement of their " sphere," it is re-
freshing to read of these other women who
are content with their od-gGiven work, and
intent on its dutia. Woman’s natural place
seems to be among the children. She is
their first guardian and teacher.
A missionary of the American Sunday-
School Union in Michigan recently found
in an Indian settlement at Saganin o Sunday-
School, wich has been sustained by a. white
woman from Boston about five years. She
married on Indian educated in an Eastern
college. After his death she was appointed.
by Government, teacher in the settlement.
She is an earnest Christian of higher culture,
and has done a good work.
At Ausable he found a Sundav-school or-
ganized and sustained by ll lady who has
lived there about three years. S c has eiglu
teachers and ninety-two scholars.
In a beautiful region on the Towns Plains
he found fivc Sunday-schools, three of which
were superintended by women, which he
was glad to furnish with needed supplies in
the. name of the American Sunday-Sshool
Union. _ Another missionary of the Union,
in Michigan,found a Sunday-school superin-
tended by a. woman, who is the mother of
SIX sons and six dau hters,all but one living
at home. She said 8 0 had considerable to do,
but would on erintend the school if nobody
else would. I: is a flourishing scnool.
. This missionary lately organized a school
in anew settlement of people from New- En-
gland, New-York, Ohio, Canada, ‘ Germany,
reland, and some French Catholics. The
superintendent is a Baptist widow; the as-
sistant superintendent is a United Presbyte-
rian; the librarian is an Episcopalian; a
Methodist exhorter will help, and the French
Catholics will attend.
Another missionary of the American Sun-
day-School Union, in Missouri, gives an ac-
count of a Sunday School established b his
mother, twelve years ago. in a “ hard-s ell"
neighborhood, south of the Missouri river,
where hounds, guns and game were brought
into the congregation; where ignorant bigols
professed to preach who could not even read.

organized a Sunda school in her own house
