RIDGEFIELD.
The town Fair is to be held this week,
commencing this evening and continuing
through Friday. The programme for the
several days will be found in out-advertising
columns. Stages will be run frotn the new
Railroad depot in the village to the Fair
hounds, and frequent trains will be run
over the Railroad.

GREENWICH.
The new Census shows apopulation of
7,672, aii increase of 1,150 since 1860,—near—
Iy eighteen percent. That speaks well for
good old Greenwich.
The Ainericns Cliib assembled at Indian
Point on Sunday for the last time this sea-
son, and the grounds are now occupied by
the carpenters who are to build the, new
Club House, which is to be erected on the
spot now occupied by the library, and will
be one of the handsomcst club houses in the
country. It is to be built in the forin of a
halt square, with two sides of 100 feet. water
front, and a centre turret 32 feet square and
130 feet high. The two end turrets are to
be. 70 feet high. The house will be three
s‘ories high, and contain 72 double bed-
rooms and fotir handsome parlors. The old
clubhouse is to be altered and improved,
and will be used as a dining hall. It is esti-
mated that the new building, furniture, and
improvements will cause an outlay of about
$150,000.
WESTON.
Thursday is to be a Field Day at the
Weston Boarding School, the occasion be-
ing the annual Parade and Review. Gov.
English and Staff have accepted invitations
to be present and review. the Company. A
large number of invitations have been is-
sued. and an enjoyable time is expected.

Mnssns. Enr'rons :—The funeral of the
late Capt. Francis Bennettt was attended at
the Memorial Church, Rev. Mr. Stevens offi-
ciating, on Tuesday last. Out of respect to
the memory of the deceased, nearly all the
stores and places of business were closed
during the funeral.
The Fairfield County Agricultural Fair
is announced to the people of Westport by
means of elegant posters. The impression
is given that a very good show will be fur-
nished this year.
Quite an excitement was occasioned by
the ( escent ainong'ns of an immense bal‘
loon, on Monday 5th.; when it first hove
in sight, and, gradually approached, finally
resting in the open lot in rear of Mr. Sam-
uel Gorham’s cabinet shop, everybody was
out speculating as to whether it was some
act-rial monster, or the Angel Gabriel in dis-
guise, come to proclaim a joyful millenium,
—the fate of Napoleon, or the prospect of
peace or continual war in Europe. When
at last it touched term firma, and its occu-
pant, (Mr. King,) stepped out and informed

The annual reunion of the 2d Conn. Light
Battery, took place Thursday, at Gregory’s
Point. . The veterans; numberin“ between
forty and fifty, assembled at 10 0 clock, and
took the 10.27 train for Norwalk... The city
Baud furnished the music. On arriving at
N orwalk it was ascertained that the Battery
would pass the place of business of the new
Mayor of the new city of South Norwalk,
the Hon. Dudley P. Ely. It was at once re-
solved that a passing salute should be given
and the batter ' halted on reaching the bank-
ing house where the Mayor was located.
Hts Honor was introduced by D. B. Lock-
wood, Esq., in some well~timed remarks
upon the prosperity of Bridgeport, and con-
gratulatory of the brilliant prospects ot'the
City of South Norwalk. The Maypr rc-
sponded in an eloquent manner, referring to
the war and winding up with the prediction
that the City of South Norwalk would, in
due time be the first city of the State. On
arriving at the Point the first busrness was
the election of officers for the ensuing year.

$20 worth of tools, a coat and smaller arti-
cles :stolcn.
Mrs. Kady Brownell, of this city, has
been initiated a member of Post Elias
Howe, Jr., No. 3, G. A. R., of Bridgeport.
She first enlisted in one of the three months
regiments in Rhodc Island, was honorably
discharged at the end of the term, and subse-
quently enlisted in the 5th R. I. Vols. At
the battle of Newborn when her husband
was wounded and dropped the colors she
bravely gathered them up and carried them
into battle. She was afterwards wounded
and honorably discharged from the serVice.
Mrs. Brownell is believed to be the only
female comrade inthc Grand Army of the
country. 4
Mr. Edward I-Iawley, brother of Mr. Mar-
cus Hawley, has just returned to Bridgeport
for a visit, after ten years absence in Califor-
nia and Oregon, where he has been engaged
in mercantile business—Standard.

that he had started at 4 p. m., from New-
burg, N. Y., and had made the 60 miles
from that place to Westport in just one hour
and 15 minutes, and had taken the trip for
pleasure only, much satisfaction was shown.
Mr. King reports a decided coolness in the
upper regions, and was evidently glad to
stop as he did, before nightfall, or before a
strong windshould have carried him far off
upon the Sound. The RewJohn E. Smith,
late Rector of the Memorial Church died in
New Haven on Thursday last, and was
buried in that city on Saturday. 'He had
been a great sufferer for several years, and
finally passed away the victim of that ter-
rible scourge—Consumption. The funeral
ceremonies were held at St. Thomas Church,
New Haven, Dr. Harwood of Trinity
Church, New Haven, officiating. There was
a large audience. '
After a struggle of some thirty years, the
Universalists of this place, vainly eudeav-i
oring during the greater portion of that
time to persuade men to walk in the paths
of virtue and morality, yet enunciating the
doctrine of “no future punishment for the
wicked,” and the “final restoration of all
thingsfi‘ have at last come to discover the
utter futility of such acourse, the absurdity
of it, and its fruitless results. They look
back upon the past with vain regret,—-—back
to the time when their members embraced
those of the more solid portion of the com-
munity here, and, beholding their number
growing smaller and smaller—see them
gradually but surely leaving the institution
and identifying themselves with other
societies of religion, conclude their mission
is a hopeless one; and the Church edifice,
after standing empty for a term, occupied at
rare intervals, now for religion, then for
legerdeniaiu ; now for negro-minstrels, tin-ii
for a school-house; now for a Mormon lec-
ture, then fora hen roost; now for a charity
fair, then for a horse-stable, is at last put into
the advertising columns of a newspaper in
search of a purchaser. They had not long
to wait. An humble spirit whose aspirations
had leaned in the direction of this “spire
with four points with a bell at its base" an-
swers, planks the sum required, and secures
an earthly tabernacle for the remainder of
its mundane existence. In a few (lays it is
expected an old pulpit banged out with
knocks illegitimate, will, with other defunct
church paraphernalia be offered at auction.

The Obstructions at Hell Gate.

Sm : It appears to be the proper moment
to acquaint the intelligent and critical read-
ers of your journal with the real views and
intentions'of the Government in reference
to the interesting and important operations
as at present carried on at Hallett’s Point,
Hell Gate. ' »
The Government, well aware'of the ne-
cessity of the ultimate removal of these ob-
structions, and of creating a clear draft of
from twenty-live to thirty feet of water at
this point, intrusted the direction of the im-
portant work undertaken to secure this ob-
ject to the engineer in charge, Major—Gene-
ral John N ewtou, who decided, in reference
to Hallctt’s Point, upon the following plan :
.The situation of the reef suggested natur-
ally the idca of attacking this rock at its
base by mining operations, which method
has been applied and carried out in Eng-
land, Scotland, and Egypt with the most
satisfactory results. To accomplish this ob-
ject, General Newton ordered a shaft to'be
sunk on the Shore line at Hallett’s Point, of
the following dimensions: Length; 115 feet;
cross-section, 95 feet; datum line, 30 feet be
low mean low water. From this floor line
of thirty feet below mean low water, eight
respective headings, or tunnels, are now be-
ing driven under the East River of the fab.

ward, and the headings 8 by 10 feet in di-
ameter. Having reached the length of 50
feet forward, the gallery 01‘ the first curve
will be struck. The object of these galleries
is to connect all the respective headings,
producing thereby what; is called technically
the cellular system. On reaching the length
of 110 feet forward with the headings, a
similar second gallery will be struck. And
on reaching a further length of 150 feet, the
gallery of the third curve will be struck.
Ultimately the powder chambers will be cut
into the respective piers left standing, in or
der to operate 'on a uniform resistance of 30
feet overhead and 25 feet lateral. In pene-
trating under the river careful tabular cal-
culations are daily prepared by testing the
density of the stratified rock, which inves-
tigations are required to secure positive re-
sults from .the intended grand explosion, by
which the formidable obstructions will be
lifted from their solid base and broken into
fragments of a convenient size to a depth of
30 feet. ' - i
Excepting a slight elevation of the upper
strata of the waters, and a gentle trembling
in the knees of the: observers, the effect of
intended grand explosion will hardly be
perceptible to the public. No detonation
whatever will be heard, no anticipated
breaking of windows and crockery in ad-
joining households will bc experienced.
These facts are corroborated 'in the British
Parliamentary Records, and the European
professional papers which are annually pub-
lished, and which show that more than. 400
similar operations, with charges of from-800
to 21,000 pounds of powder, have been cir-
culated and fired by the writer of this arti-
cle, withdut doing damage to one dwelling
~l~or endangering the life of a single individ-
ual. N o accident whatever. has occurred
during the mining operations. '
