WThe New York Republican conven-
tion has put in nomination for GovernOI
GEN. STEWART L. Woonronn. Geo. Wm..—
Curtis was chosen temporary Chairman,
and Gen. ChasflVan \Vyck, permanent
President of the Convention and the utmost
enthusiasm seemed to prevail throughout-
its proceedings. Gen. Woodford received
two hundred and fifty-eight votes to one
hundred and tivo for Mr. Greeley. As the
Tribune philosopher had long been talked of
as a probable nominee, this result is espe—
cially flattering to the young and 1isiug
General. He will make a strong candidate,
indeed we think the strongest that could
have been put upon the course. He' 18
young, ardent, eloquent and a sagacious
campaigner, and will ensure 1111 earnest can-
vass. He 11.15 already challenged G01 ernor
Holi‘mau to a joint discussion before the
people, and we look for 11 particularly b111-
liant contest this fall in the Empire State.
The Gcner :11 has already held the office of
L' 1311. Gov 1',1101 in which pOsition he w on
11 1105101 friends and 110 enemies, except
among 1130 thieves and robbers that infest
Albany every legislative session. His ar-
my record was 1110stbrilliant and credita-
ble, and we believe the sham' democracy of
New YOik will be given the liveliest turn
they have had since the rebellion, on the 8th
of November next, under the leadership of
our friend Woodford. Success to him and
the cause.
Our Water Commissioners w1 re out again
last week with engineer Bacon. They visit-
ed Silver Minc brook and found everything
favorable for our supply there, although
three other sources are open to them, in
event land owners are too greedy in that
quarter.
We part'cularly' desire them to take the
Silver Mine stream for the treble reasons,—
that the Water is wonderfully pure, is abun-
dant, and, by rcservoiring it properly, a
wry great (rid may be glee-11. all the water pow-
ers on that stream, which now in times of
drought are nearly or quite worthless. It
has been demonstrated beyond contradic-
tion, that such 11 stream can be so reservoir-
ed as not only to furnish abundant water for
a town, but also to increase the stream, in
seasons of tilougth, by letting oti‘ surplus
water, and thus purifying the ponds.
ES” The BroO'klyn Union owned by Hen-
ry C. Bowen, and edited by Theodore Til-
ton, publishes a letter from Schuyler Colfax,
in which be positively asserts his determin-
ation to forsake forever political life, at the
close of his Vice-President term. There
are many other statesmen the country could
better atl‘ord to relinquish, but we doubt if
he has been as comfortable :1 single day
since he became Vice-Pre'sident, as he was
when a member and speaker of the House.
Our Vice-Presidents and Lieutenant-Govern-
ors are mere figure heads, and no lire man,
like Colfax ever has any business in either
position. The Hartford Post intimates that
Colfax is to assume the editorship of the
Brooklyn Union. With a young family bc~
ginning to make demands upon him, Colfax
is justified in “going higher” and devoting
his remaining energies where he can earn a
compete11cy,—a thing no man can do in
Congress.

is now in a condition to be used. It is
“ fearfully and wonderfully made,” like most
enterprises of the sort, organized by Nor-
walk. How long, oh how long, shall we
continue to botch and bogglc all we under-
take in town affairs.

SPLENDID OUTFIT—Mayor Ely has pur—
chased a span of young Black Hawks which
for trim beauty will vie with any matched
pair in town. He has also a. new carriage
of the Laudaulette pattern, which for unique
beauty and symmetry is a little ahead of any
city rival, as the Mayor’s carriage should
be. They are all liveried at that first-class
stable kept by Scofield at South Norwalk,
and we venture half a guess that the Mayor
is slyly laying for some of our country Je-
hues who intcuIIi sweeping the boards at
our County Fairs.

WWe are pained to learn of the sudden
decease of Mrs. Charles Sherry, one of the
older residents of Norwalk and a most esti-
mable lady. Of her it may with especial
propriety be said:
“None knew her but to love her
None named her but to praise.”
Her dcceasc is a bereavement not only to
her family, but to a whole neighborhood.

ACCIDENT—As Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Whit-
man and their child were riding 011 the
down town road, a hand car came rolling
along the railway track frightening their ‘
horses, overturning their carriage, and more
Or less injuring all the occupants. Mr.
Whitman was quite seriously hurt internal-
ly, while Mrs. Whitman and the child we: e
very badly, though not dangerously bruised.
It was 11 narrow escape from a fatal acci-
dent.

Wit is claimed that Mt. Greeley feels
piqued 11111.1. he was not nominated at the
recent Saratoga Convention and our cotem-
porarics arc‘quoting extracts from the Tri-
bune to prove this position. We do not so
read Mr. Greeley. That he had good reason
to expect his name would he presented be-
fore that Convention all know full well, not
that he did ought to further his chances of a
nomination, no one who knows Mr. Greeley
will for a. moment believe. Thathe could
have se'c'ured the nomination had he chosen
to manipulate the delegates, as most candi-
dates would have done, is also undoubtedly
true. But Mr. Greeley is a thoroughly sin-
cere and honest man. In his heart there is
neither guile or dissembling and he left the
convention to act entirely free and no one
will give Gen. \Voodford a more earnest and
able support than Mr. 'Greeley. The real
fact that no man deserves more considera-
tion from his party than Mr. Greeley and
the fact is universally conceded, but his i11-
grain integrity makes him at times a little
erratic, as parties go, and he is therefore and
ever will be more highly prized as a. toiler
at the political car than as a Pilot at the
helm. His recognition, if it ever comes in
this life, ought to be rendered by the nation,'
ratheixthau by any State.

@”thnix'Engine Company were out
for th'eir regular monthly “wash" last Tues-
day afternoon. As Mr. Cole, the manufac-I
turer of the Steam Fire Engine was in town
the Company turned out caily and devoted
neatly the entire afternoon to a thorough
trial of the Engine. Suction was taken from
the liver in the rear of Sherwood's Block,
and a good stream, through'lan inch nozzle
was thrown about 250 feet. Afterwards the
engine was backed down on the stone arch
bridge where a. new suction length was
tried. The engine readily raised water
from the depth of 27 feet and nine inches,
and throwing an inch and a quarter stream
a distance of something over 150 ft. Steam
was got up ready for use in a trifle short of
five minutes. During the entire trial the
engine worked well, and to the entire sat-
isfaction of Mr. Cole, and the firemen.
THE ICE SUPPLY. —Tl1e supply of ice in
Norwalk has has entirely given out, Messrs.
R. Ells & Son closing out theirs yesterday.
They have succeeded, however, in securing
a quantity in Danbul'y, and will probably
be able to supply the demand for the bal-
ance of the season. Mr. Kceler, the South
Norwalk Ice man, has been receiving his
supply from Danbury for some time past.

ACCIDENT—A cab and wagon collided
near the residence of Allen Belts, Esq, Sat-
urday evening, and three men in the wagon
were thrown out. One of the number, Ste-
phen Green, unfortunately had his right leg
broken below 'the knee. He was brought
back to the village to Uhlc Bros’ StOre.

eians in “pipe laying.” He is rapidly put-
ting down a line of gas pipes from the

Island. Its a big job but no one would do
it quicker or better than Grace.

W: A terrible accident occurred at
Tom’s River, N. J., last Thursday. The
Method'st Sunday School of Long Branch
were 011 a Pic-nic and when passing in pro-
cession’ over a foot bridge the structure
of children and teachers into the stream be-
low. Every effort was made to rescue them
notwithstanding which eight persons were
drowned. .In connection with this disaster
the following touching incident is related: —
"Peter Howland and Mary E. Styles, two
of the victims, were betrothed lovers, and
were to have been married soon. They fell
together when the budge went down.
Peter was r'cscucd 111 an exhausted condi-
tion. When biought to 'shore he turned
and saw Miss Styles yet struggling in the
water. In anothcl moment he was bravely
swimming to her side. He reached her and
while Itrying to bring her, a woman whose
name is unknown, was seen to clutch them,
and the three went down together, How-
land and Miss Styles never to rise again
alive.”
