Mr. Doolittle, of New Haven, read an 'in-
vitation to the Governor and Staff, State of-
ficers and the Legislature, from Hon. Wm.
M. Tweed, on behalf of the Americus Club,
to visit their club room at Indian Harbor,
Greenwich, on Saturday the 9th-inst.
{M11 Doolittle said the Senate had accept-
ed; he moved the House accept also.

Mr. Pratt, of Wetbersfleld, said that the
invitation was signed by a man for whom

he had little respect, and whoée acquaint- ,

once he should not personally desire to
make.

Mr. Ollnstead, of Stamford; was surprised
at the remarks of Mr. Pratt. He knew Wm.
M. Tweed and he was augentleman in every
sense of the term.

Mr. Doolittle said he did not know Mr.
Tweed, but this invitation was from the
Americus Club. , .

Mr. Pratt said he desired to ex lain him-
self. He did not know Mr. weed, but
when be, Mr. Pratt, was a member of Con-
gress, walking one day down Penna lvauia‘
Avenue with Hon. Mr. Phelps, of 'ssouri.

Tweed passed them, and Phelps said of him,
that he went into the common council of
New,York poor as‘Job’s turkey, and came
out in twelve months rolling in wealth. He
had no respect for Such men; Perhaps, how-
ever, hc'had reformed. He hoped~so.-

Mr. Olmstead said this club was compos-
ed of both political parties. He would'guar-
antee they would be found gentlemen such
asllve would not regret being acquainted
wit . . , ‘ .

The House voted to accept the invitation.

amendment of the House abolishing all poll
taxes, and insisted on its former 'action in
passing the act.

Mr. Johnson moved to recedo from the
former action of the House and the motion
passed.

'Mr. Noyes, of Lebanon, moved the origin-
al bill be indefinite]?I postponed—carried.

_Mr. Johnson, of nfield,calledup Senate
bill No. 34, which came from the Senate

passed, provides that railroad companies'

may, by agreement with each other, consol-
idate into one company, provided that this
act. shall be held applicable to such corpo-
rations only where railways are in connec-
tion, or in whole or in part constitute con-
tinuous or through lines of public travel.

. Discussed with greatw‘armth and anima-
tion, and on a call of the previous question,
the vote stood—yeas 2, nays 123; Demo-
crats refusing ,to vote.

_ MI‘. Eaton, of Hartford, moved to recon-
sxder the vote and to make it the special or-
der of the day for Tuesday morning next at
10 o’clock.

Mr. Miller, of Enfield, moved to lay that
motion on the table—carried.

The average tax on securities in Connecticut is
about two per cent. The payment of this tax cannot
be avoided except by holding securities non-taxable.
The Air Line bonds being of this class, the same as
Governments, are by reason of this exemptionlargely
increased in ‘value. » '

The interest is liberal, and will ‘not be afi'ected by
any decline in gold. Careful investors are selecting
good currency bonds in preference to gold-bearing
bonds.

The large amount of securities lost and stolen has
awakened a desire to obtain a form of investment
which can be rendered comparatively safe by being
registered. To meet this want the Air Line bonds
are prepared so that at any time they can be regis-
tered either with or without coupons. '

of the public seems to increase in its advantages for

country and all that is necessary to support a first~
class road and make it a profitable investment
