DARIEN.
“ The event of the season,” the great Fair
at the Darien Seminary, commences this
evening and continues through Thursday
evening. Darien people will need no urging
to attend, and many from adjoining towns
will not resist the temptations of a cool,
moonlight ride and a pleasant hour with-
the ladies.
GEORGETOWN. -
A Division of the Sons of Temperance,
has been recently instituted in this place.
Twenty-one persons signed their names to
the application fora charter. A large ma—
jority of these were present. at the organiza-
tion Of theSociety which takes the name of
Fraternal Division, NO. 79. , This is the
name Of the Division formerly located at
aWilton. A number of the members Of the
old Division have united with the new So-
ciety. At present the meetings are held in
Mr: Sturges Bennett’s new hall, and the SO-
eiety will probably secure the room perma-
nently and thus have one Of the largest and
pleasantest Division rooms in the state. By
request of G. W. P., Hubbell, a number Of
the members of Concord Division, No. 2,
S. of T., came up last Saturday to instruct
the Division here in the working of a Divis-
ion meeting. They not only expressed
them selves as well pleased with their recep-
tion, which was unexpected, but were sur-
prised to find such a fine hall, which is cer-
tainly a credit t0 the place and should be
made remunerative to its owner. The Hall
is on the second floor of Mr. Bennett’s new
building. It is lighted by‘fourwind'ows on
each side, and two at one end; at the other
end is a wide entrance hall, and also anon-
tc-room of good size. The ceiling is one of
good height and furnishedgvith a ventilator.
At the window end of- the hall is a raised
platibrm the whole length of the room.
Mr. B. occupies the first floor with his store.
RIDGEFIELD.
Another Floral Festival is to be held at -
J ones’s aHall on Wednesday evening.

Mr. George Drummond, Carter Street,
picked 8 bushels of Raspberries on the 4th
inst. and 10 bushels on the 5th inst.
We learn that Rev. Dr. DesBrisay con-
templates a visit to his native heath—Nova

The inj auction against building the Town
Hall was di=solved by Judge utler on
'chnesday, on the ground that the act of
the Levislature passed this season made
Valid all acts of the town in reference to
the Town Hall, and authorized the issue‘ of
bonds. We understand that the case now
goes to the Supreme Court . '
Work was resumed on the Town House
building Thursday mornin .
The Fourth was a dayo mild excitements
in the village. Many private residences
were tastefully decorated with flags. The
Stars and Stripes were hoisted on the liber-
ty pole in the Park, but no bells were rung,
a gentleman, whose memory reaches back
for fifty—four years, informs us that never be-
fore in that time has he known a “Fourth tO'
ass Without the ringing of the village bells.
n the evening many private houses and
grounds were illuminated in honor of the
. earth. The celebration by our Irish fellow
citizens, was one of the most enthusiastic
character. At 8’clOck A. M., the procession
was formed at the Canal House, headed by
the Bridgeport City Band, and comprising
the newly organized Union Guards, the St.
J ohn’s Benevolent Society, the Temperance
cadets, and a juvenile ‘military company,
who proceeded through the principal streets
making a march of some five or six miles,
thence through Washington Avenue to ,
Woodside Park.
.The.Steamboat excursion was a “dead
failure,” only sixty persons being on board
—not enough to pay for coal.
Vassar. College graduated this, year a
class of 33, two of whom, Francis Hoyt,
daughter of Jos. B. Hoyt, and Cynthia W,
Ritch, daughter of Wells R. R. Bitch, were
from Stamford. Among the Yale graduates
this year is Wm. J .‘Betts, son of Mr. James
Betts, of Stamford—Advocate.
_ DANBURY. ~
P. D. Crosbey has entered upon the duties
of Post Master in this town. The Post oili-
ce is being removed to the Wooster House
Building where carpenters have been to
work fitting up the place for the purpose.
The Danbury Shirt manufactory has been
made in to a joint stock company, the shares
of which it is hoped will be taken up
in Danbury. Bridgeport bids for the work,
92nd offers to take all the shares and furnish
a building.
The double thread machines now being
made from the patent secured by Walker B.
Bartram, at the Bartram &Fanton factory,
give promise of a great success.
While the massive iron arms for the turn
table at Ridgefield were being loaded at
Norwalk, 3. chain broke, letting one of them
to the ground with such force as to break it
in two. One of the pieces swung to one side
and fell on the foot Of Darby Green, of
Danbury, crushing it in a very bad manner.
He was brought home.
David B. Booth was sworn Judge of Pro-
bate for the district of Danbury and New
Fairfield, on Monday.
The temperance societies ' of Dan-bury
unite in a picnic to Lake Kenosia, on Wed-
nesday.
The report that several Chiuamen had ar-
rived in town last week, and were going to
work at halting for ninety cents a day,
created quite a sensation among many hat-
ters. The report was false, and the excite-
ment died out.‘ ‘

One night last week two scoundrels,in
into the “Shoe” shop of Capt. Sam Faircbild.
They were rewarded for their pains and
trouble by finding an Old pair of patched
pocketless pantaloons. Preparations are
making by a person living near for the next
visit.
Representativ‘tee's with other members
of the Assembly accepted an invitation from
the celebrated “Americas Club” to visit their
head. quarters at Greenwich, ,on Saturday
last. Mr. L. reports himselfas highly pleas-
ed and entertained.
Whether it be in the matter of tree-love
or an outrageous disregard for civil obliga-
tions, ‘thc village of Westport has of late
furnished abundant evidence of the loose
and irregular tendencies of the age. From
day to day we hear of some contemptiblc
occurrence which Stamps those who have
the power to prevent, but whodon’t exer-
cise it, with—incapacity to fulfill the du-
ties of their office. ‘.
With gold declining to 11%, and the pros-
pect that it can not be permanently forced
higher we have come to ask the question
why breadstufi' should be so high, right in
the face too, of remarkably good crops. Just
one excuse is assigned, viz. a large foreign
demand. But even this with our_immense
resources and facilities for transportation
cannot avail long. The figures must come
down. K ‘
For the first time in many years our river
is almost deserted by pleasure sailing crafts.
0f the dozen or more small boats that in-
habited these parts last year, and for years
previous, but one, Mr. James K. Jessirps re-
mains. She is a fine Sailer very commodii
one, and is commanded by our only remain-
ing boat expert, Capt. S. Fair'child. .
The fine rain early' on Friday morning
last, caused vegetation to look up smilingly
in payment for a benefit so long craved.
“Hay and Harvest” that charming period
in Summer’s history is with us, and making
retrospect 0f the weather since its arrival
we are inclined to wish it. were always

Rev. Mr. Butterworth, Son of Mr. Buter—

Church on Sunday last.
Barring its “narrowness,” the road latély

Thompson’s Sash and Blind Factory is the
finest in town; A great pity it could not
have been made a little wider. -
The Chess Club continues to meet weekly
at the houSes of. its members. The time of
meeting has been changed from Saturday to
Friday Eve. ' If a man has taste and judge-
menthc will exhibit them when opportuni-
ty Offers. In the case of a. “Circulating Li-_
brary” established lately, we have a bril-
liant example of the truth. Just two books

A Specimen Of Capt Wm. Gayer’s letter-
ing may be Seen over the entrance to the
New Bank. We learn that the graining
and interior decoration have been intrusted
to him. . ‘
Mrs. Rowland, widow of the late Thomas
Rowland, Esq., died on Saturday 2d, at the
wonderful age of 97, Mrs. R. was our oldest
inhabitant, and had been in feeble health for
many years. ,
An effort is making by prominent gentle-
men here to stock the Saugatuck river with
Salmon. A petition to theAssembly looking
for and in the matter, will be presented to
that body before adjournment. The scheme
is said to be perfectly feasible. “PAUL.”

W Ike Bromley, in the Hartford Post
administers the following rebuke to our
Legislature, which the people generally will
say is well deserved :—
Both Senate and House capped the climax
of folly this morning in accepting the invi-
tation of William M. Tweed—“Boss Tweed”
as they call him in New York and Albany,
to meet the Americas club at their, club
house‘in Greenwich, next'Saturday, for cat-
ing and drinking purposes. The invitation
came to Governor English for himself and
staff, and members of the Legisleture. It
was accepted in the Senate without a dis-
senting voice and the House concurred, with
but two or three dissentents. And so the
Legislature of Connecticut—paid by the day
for their services, as well to uphold the
honor and dignity of the State as to make
her laws—indicate their appreciation oftheir,
positions by fooling away a day accepting
the hospitalities of a club of New York
politicians, whose Only excuse for insulting
the Legislature by such an invitation is that
they don’t know any better. The invitation
means simply guzzle. The Americas club,
if I am correctly informed, is made up of
men whose physical, moral, and intellectual
development is below the belt. They dis-
cuss chowder and rum mostly. The crav-
ings of their higher natures—if they have
any—tor stimulus, are satisfied with discus-
sion of the lowest order of New York poli-
tics—how to cuta municipal purse, or sack
a city treasury. These are the men who
have the efl‘rontery to invite a Connecticut
Legislature to one of their entertainments,
and William M. Tweed, reported to be the
most corrupt politician in New York city——
and that means the whole world—signs the
invitation. Anda Connecticuf Legislature,
sitting here day after day, exhausting, if not
“ the resources of statesmanship,” the pa-
tience of the people and the money in the
treasury, yawn' wearily under the reading
of the invitation and without life or energy
enough to know they are insulted, necept it
and become by the acceptance the guests of
“Boss Tweed’ and his gang of word poli-
ticians. This is rough on the people of the
State. , If it has come to this, that the Leg-
islature has not got the moral courage or
the self-respect to decline 'anybody’s and
everybody’s invitation «to eat,_ drink and
gorge themselves, it is time we had a consti-
tutional convention and an organic act
prohibiting Legiglatures entirely. “ Boss
Tweed”, owned and run the Legislature of
New York. He aspires to own and run the
