whose screams seem to delight hinl. Yes-
terday he got the scissors and began to cut
his own hair. A perfect fright he made of
himself. He lied Aunt Prue‘s dress to the
hack of her rocking chair, the other day, so
that when she got up, the chair got up too.
Only a week ago he put a wick into his fa-
ther’s bottle of hour’s grease and set it on
fire, and yesterday he must needs collect all
the tooth powder he could find in the house
and mix it in a tumbler with lamp oil, to
paint the bureau with ! Oh dear! I am
never at rest a minute wilh him, except he’s
out doors at play. There is somebody scol-
ding down slab-s, or crying up stairs; and
when there is silence, I know that some pe-
cnliar mischief is hatching. I’ve talked and
talked to him, but there’s no use in it. He
is sorry, and will not do so again; and that
seems to act like an nbsolution, and he is
ready with a cheerful heart for the next
pranks." Oh, if Robert was only half" as
good as Mrs. Goodkin’s James! Well, if I
ever live to see him grow up, I hope that I
shall have some comfort in the boy, for
heaven knows I have very little now 1”
Now we lake the boy’s side. We know
justhow he feels, and just what the mother
1s. .
A line organization and high health fill
the lad to overflowing with animal Spirits,
and the parents are trying to cork it up, but
in spite of lhem nature drives out the cork.
The parents are in regular occupations and
have no surplus vitality to vex them. But
vigorous boys generate a vast deal of motive
force for which no regular channels are pro-
vided.
In a family where all the children work
at some appropriate trade, boys are less like-
ly to fall into mischief. This is one reason
why it is easier to bring up children on a
farm than in a town. It is true there are
fewer temptations. But the main reason is,
that there is a legitimate channel for the
boy’s energies to flow in. Govern boys by
keeping them busy! Now and then there
are bad nature’s that will go perversely
. wrong. But ordinarily boys do not do a
wrong in purpose. Their high spirits get
them into mischief and then they go wrong
for the sake of avoiding the consequences.
Work off the steam, and there will be less
pressure and fewer explosions.
And now comes the very question for
which all this has been‘ said.- What shall
we do Willi boys? What shall parents do
who livcirr towns and cities? - What shall
professional men do, whose children cannot
participate in their parent’s work ? _
Instead of keeping them anxiously within
doors, thrust them out as much as possible.
Do not let watching become spying. Lei
children have sports and companions, and
unwatchcd liberty. Prlt them upon their
honor. Boys will early respond to this. Do
not make too much of their mistakes and
faults.' .How can one be a child, and not be
full of faults ? Explain their" mistakes gent-
ly. Be patient! W'ait for them. Children
must have lime to grow. Somebody had to
wait for you. Never let fear make a gulf be-
tween the child and you. Within due lim-
its, liberty is the best ’ thing for a child, as it
is for a man. It will lead to irregularities,
but out of these will come experience, and,
gradually, self—conlrol. .The object of all
family government is to teach, children 10
get along without being governed. They
must therefore be trusted, even if they abuse
it, yet lllcy must be trusted. Keep lhl m
busy with pleasant work, if possible. Awa-
ken in them curiosity about the things
which lie around them. A very little in-
struction will make children curious of Hill]-
er'als, plants, natural history, of literary cu—'
riosilics, autographs, postage stamp collec-
tions, and a thousand other things which
will inspire pleasure in their reason rather
than ill their appetites.
Never scold children, but ‘sobcrly and
quietly ‘rellrovc. Do not employ shame, ex-
cept in extreme cases. The suffering is
acute, it hurts self-respect in the child, to re-
prove a child before the family; to ridicule
it, to tread down its feelings ruthlessly, is to
wake ill its bosom malignant feelings. A
child is dcfencelcss; he is not allowed to
argue. He is often tried, condemned and ex-
ecuted in a second, Hcfinds himself of lit-
tle use. He is put at things he don’t care
for, and withheld from things that he does
like; he is made the convenience of grown-
up people, is hardly supposed to have any
rights, except in a corner, as it were, is sent
hither and thither, made to get up or sit
down for cvcrybody’s convenience but his
own, is snubbed and catcchized until he
learns to dodge government and elude au-
thority, and then be whipped for being such
“a lying wirelp that no one can believe
on.’

lime ofit in after life, but for thcfirst fifteen

Grandchildren.
Gather together, you great and goodly
company, who are interested in the grand-
child in your own house, and let us help
each to a better understanding of the mean-
ing and richness of their relation. We will
not begin with the creation or deluge, nor
undel-lake to give it history of grandfathers
and grandchildren sincclhc days of Enoch;
nor will we go into the philosophy of the
parental love, that is the key to the whole
matter. We know that we love our chil-'
dren, first of all, from a certain instinct, be-
cause they arc ours; and we know that
while with the lower animals this love
ceases with the dependence of the young
animal upon the parent for aliment, with
the human being the love deepens as the re-
lation of parent and child is ripened and
strengthened by rowing sympath and
mutual service. ow this very affliction
that we have for our own children does not
rest in them alone, as they grow in years
and knowledge and rise into maturity. ' We
strll yearn for a little child to love, and there
is a void in the house where there is none.
Good Providence has benignly met this
need of our nature by ordainmg that when
our children grow up their place shall be
supplied, or rather truly filled, by children
of theirs, and so the child is not set aside,
but rather restored in the grandchild.
I do not exactly know how to analyze the
kind of affection that is so ready to cling to
a grandchild. We love that little fellow at
Once, Without Waiting for moralist or theo-
logian to define the feeling or urge the duly.
He is blood of our blood and bone of our
bone, and in the form that most expresses
dependence and wins protection. He is the
chrld of our child, and we love him for our
sake, for his mother’s or father’s sake, as
well as for his own sake. We see in him'
not only himself, but the whole world of
afi‘ection with which he is related. . In that
boy or girl in our daughter’s, arms we
, see as in a mirror the face of our daughter
when she was in her mother’s~ arms; and
that mother‘s face smiles again upon us with
new grace, whether from the earthly home
or from the heavenly mansion.
Then this child is nearer our hearts from
- being an interpreter of the plan of God for
our human life. He shows to us how it is
that God is ever educating us for himself,
and calling us to live in flesh and undying
affection by ever setting, like Jesus, a. lilllc
child in the midst of us. If we have only
our children to love, the time will come
when they Will grow up and be full of new
interests and cares that may come between
them and our hearts. When these children
of ours have children their affections are
softened, and their hearts are quickened
toward us and ours toward them by this
new attraction, that sends a child into the
famil not to be the rival of any, but the
flier: of all—Harper's Magazine for May.

1. They are secured by a first mortgage on property
worth more than double the amount of bonds issued.
The bonds can be issued only as the work pro-
gresses, and for but one half, of the actual expendi-
ture; while the value of the “ franchise," when the
line is completed, will be of far greater value than
the simple cost of the road.
2. They are based on the Great Through Line be-
tween New York and Boston, which shortens the dir-
tartee about 27 miles, and the time one hour.
The road will be 52 miles in length, running be-
tween New Haven and Wililmantic, and will be the
connecting link between roads already established,
forminga route almost exactly straight from one city
to the other, effecting a saving of from fifteen to
twenty per cent in the distance.
3. One-half of the Road is about completed, and
Nearly Two-Thirds of the Estimated cost of The
Whole Linc has been Economically Expanded.
The section between New Haven and Middletown,
is about finished. The Connecticut River Bridge
and the Eastern Division, are well under way, and
will be carried forward with all possible speed.
4. The State of Connecticut is Trustee for the Bond-
holders. ’ ' . .
This is additional security; proving the good
faith of the company in furnishing every possible
safe-guard and a guaranty that the property covered
by the mortgage will be held secure for their protec-
tion.
'5. The Local Business developed during the past
thirty years, and awaiting the opening of the road,
together with the through trade which must by necessi-
iyflow to Short, Quick Routes.
The line traverses the central portion of the State,
furnishing railroad facilities to some dozen towns,
many of them possessing large manufacturing in-
terests, opening up a field almost entirely destitute
of railroad transportation.
6. The Road is located in Connecticut, and will large-
ly increase its Productioencss and Influence, and add
Materiality to its wealth. ,
As a “Home Investment” the bonds possess ad-
ditional attraetions. More confidence is felt in them.
The condition of the enterprise is better understood.
The location of the lib c, the requirements of that
portion of the State through which it passes, the
uniform success of all well managed roads in Con-
necticnt, enable the investor to assure himself that
his investment is abundantly secure. '
7. The wellplmown character of the Projectors of the
Enterprise, which is a Guaranty of its Early Comple-
tion and successful Management.
Everything depends on the management of an en-
terprise. Prudent, energetic, successful business
men as directors and officials largely increase the
confidence which is felt in the obligations of a compa-
ny. Those connected with the Air Lineroad are well
know for ability and character, and we point to their
management, and the results accomplished within
the past year, as a guaranty for the future.

about two per cent. The payment of this tax cannot
be avoided except by holding-securities non-taxable.
The Air Line bonds being of this class, the same as
Governments, are by reason of this exenlptionlargely
increased in value. '

The interest is liberal, and will not be afi‘ected by
any decline in gold. Careful investors are selecting
good currency bonds in preference to gold-bearing
bonds.

and are of the denominations of $500 and $1000.
The large amount of securities lost and stolen has
awakened a desire to obtain a form of investment
which can be rendered comparatively safe by being
registered. To meet this want the Air Line bonds
are prepared so that at any time they can be regis-
tered either with or without coupons. .
