NEW CANAAN,
A Pic-Nic is to be held in Raymond’s
Grove, July 4th, by the German Singing
Society.
. This evening, 21st inst, a Strawberry and
' Floral Festival is to be held by the ladies of
St. Mark’s Church.
Samoan—The ladies of .the Crystal
Wave Temperance Division of Stamford,
are making arrangements for a Festival to
be held in Seely's Hall, on the evening of
the 80th inst. As the management is to be
entirely in the hands of the enterprising and
agreeable young ladies of the Division, an
unusually good time may be expected. Go
over and help them.
RIDGEFIELD.
The ladies of the Methodist Society are to
hold a Festival, at Jones’ Hall, Wednesday
evening, on which occasion they will intro-
duce several pleasing novelties.
GREENWICH.
The Americus Club “opening” came Ofi‘
on Saturday, at Indian Point. Several new
buildings have been erected, and a number
of improvements made on the premises.
Full supplies of clams and whiskey were
laid in last week.
DANBURY.
Peter J. Miller of Bridgeport, char ed
with breaking into the saloon of Mr. CUB.
Keeler, in East Bridgeport, a month or so
ago, plead gurlty at Danbury before the Su-
perior Court, of the charge, and was sen-
tenced to one year’s im risonment in the
State_ Prison. Smith inans and Frank
Morris wercconvicted before the same court
of breaking Jail, in Bridgeport, not lon ago,
and both were sentenced to the State lgrison
for one year each. Thomas Green convicted
of arson in firing a store, in NorWalk, to
which a dwelling was attached, was sen-
tenced to seven years’ imprisonment.
Wm: E. Bulkley, M. D. died at his real-
dence in this place, on Tuesday evening, in
the 71st year of his age.

BRIDGEPORT.
_ Burglars. have commenced their opera-
tions in Bridgeport, two stores on Water at.
havusg been roken into Wednesday night.
One was that of J. M. Samis & Co., and the
other was Morford dc Trubea’s.
Two brothers, William and Geo. Reed,
were drowned in the harbor on Tuesday ev-
ening.
Extensive horse-stealing operations are
gomg on a short distance to the north of

We understand that the enterprising
young men among our colored citizens are
organizing a military company to be called
the Grant Guard, and that they will make a
public parade at no distant day.
Ground has been broken for a block of
houses on State street, south side, between
Warren and Myrtle avenues.

J ulia Wheeler, ofthis city, and others, start-
ed from San Francisco a short time since for

A yery enjoyable concert was held in the
Baptist Church on Sunda evening. The

un er the direction of Mr. J. G. Snelling.
Wednesday afternoon the corner stone of
the New Universalist Church on Bedford
street, was laid.
The new borough police appear in uni-
fosm when on duty. Blue pants and coat,

11 Saturday, the dead body of a man was
found in the yard of a‘ dweller in “Dublin,”
the dead. man was John Murray, a tramp,
he was like all of his class, a victim to the
rum fiend.
, Officer Alphonse informs us that the dead
body of a man, supposed to be a german
tramp, was found in the water on the south
side of Shippan Point, on Tuesday.

Now England.
The history of New England is written
imperishably on the face of a continent, and
in characters as beneficcnt as they are on-
during. In the old world national pride
feeds itself with the record of battles and
conquests; battles which proved nothing
and settled nothing; conquests which shift-
ed a boundary on a map, and put one ugl

Next to the fugitives whom Moses led out
of Egypt, the little ship load of outcasts
who nded at Plymouth two centuries and
a half a5: are destined to influence the ill-
ture of e world. The spiritual thirSt of
mankind has for ages been quenched at He-
brew fountains; but the embodiment in hu-
man institutions of truths uttered by the
Son of Man eighteen centuries ago was to
hemainly the work of Puritan thou ht and
Puritan self-devotion. Leave-Now land
outin the cold! While you are plotting it,
she site by every fireside in the land where
there is met , culture, and the thought.
Faith in Oil, faith in man, faith in work
-—this is the short formula inwhich we may
sum up the teaching of the founders of New
land, a creed ample enough for this life
an the next. If their municipal re tione
smack somewhat of Judaism, yet ere can
be no nobler aim or more practical wisdom
than theirs; for it was to make the law of
man a living counterpart of the law oi God,
in their highest conception of it. Were they
too earnest in the strife to save their souls
alive f' That is still the problem which ev-
ery wise and brave man is life-ion in solv-
ing. If the Devil takes a less hate 1 shape
to us than to our fathers, he is as busy With
us as with them; and if we cannot find it
in our hearts to bre_ak with a gentleman of
soth worldly Wisdom, who gives such
admirable dinners, and whose manners are
perfect, so much the worse for us.
Looked at on the outside, New England
history is dry and unpicturcsque. There is
no rustle of silks, no waving oi‘ plumes, no
cliak of golden spurs. Our sympathies are
not awakened b the changeful destinies,
the rise and fa of great families, whose
doom was in their blood. Instead of all
this we have the homespun fates of Ce has

In many instances much of our hottest weather oe-
eurs early in June. It is reasonable-to suppose that
after the protracted, damp and driaxling period, we
may have it come upon us in good earnest.
The strawberry season is here, and large quantities
of berries are daily shipped to markets east and west
and notwithstanding the plentiful supply, prices re-
main stif. ,
Mr. J. H. Pinkney has introduced gas into his
house. Every room is furnished with It. When
lighted it gives a brilliant light, putting into the
shade the whole family of petroleum combinations.
The apparatus used In generating, is constructed on
a new principle, and thus far works well.
We daily hear of depredations by ill-disposed per-
sons among gardens and flower beds of our citizens,
and much annoyance Is the consequence. In retalia-
tion, the Advertiser suggests lynching, horelwhlp-
ping, shooting, or something of that sort, as Just the
thing to stop It. We say no; do nothing of the
kind. Lay no finger on them until they “can be
caught in the act;" and then put them through as
the law requires. One hardened sinner sent up for
thirty days with a fine hanging at the end of it, will
be more eflectual in stopping these depredations than
twenty instances of summary proceeding.
Fourth of July is coming, and something should
be done for its proper celebration. We shall expect
to hear the bells ring, cannons fired, and the usual
amount of fire crackers and torpedoes set oil“; but
we hope “19 rinsing will take place at seasonable
hours, and the firing conducted with some sort of
system.
The heat of the last three days was of that potent
kind which induces shirt collars, and wristbands to
needs unaccountably from their wearers, and ren-
dera luxurious, evenings, cool shade, and sparkling
fountain. Summer has begun in good earnest.
Speaking of Strawberries we looked at a basket in
Jones’ store that beat anything we have seen this
season. Each berry would measure live inch in
circumference. They were raised by the Wakein s.
It is estimated that the ditch running from the
wharf, past the hotel, up to the “Mansion House’.

D. S. Gray, lam, is about to place a first-class
three-quarter Carom Table into the Billiard Room, ,

Work Is being vigorously pushed on the Bank
Building. The Counting Room sashes are glazed,

tered, likewise the Masonic hall. Everything thus
far has been done in workmanlike shape. We regret
to learn that no cornice will be attached to the public
ball. A room solarge as that will not look right, it
seems to us, without it.

The side-walk in flout of Mr. A. S. Huributt’s res-
idence has been raised and very much improved by
grading and curbing. The blind drain underneath
has also been adjusted.
In the last Advertiser we are accused of knowing
nothing of the Saugatuck Valley R. R. prospects,
and that if we repeat the assertion to the effect
that the operation ofstock subscriptions hang fire,
that terrible fellow “Musickee” will be set on us.
Wearenot to be intimidated by threats. The re-
mark is again made, and weshall be pleased to hear
from that “awful individual." PAUL.
The ladies of the Methodist church are to hold a
Festival in the Lecture Room on Tuesday and Wed-
nesday evenings of this week.
Four Hundred Miles
IN SEVENTEEN SECONDS.
The followine is an extract from the let-
ter of a friend describing the practical work-
ing of a pneumatic tube laid between Glas-
gow and London, by which messages and
packages are almost instantly conveyed be-
tween thosc two cities:
I “I had occasion to send a telegram to Lon-
don, the other day, and in a few minutes re-
ceived a reply which led me to suppose that
a serious error had been committed by m
agents,_mvolving man thousand pounds.
Immediately went to e tele aph office and
asked to see my message. fie clerk said:
‘We can’t show it to you, as we have sent it
to London.’ ‘But,’ I replied, ‘you must have.
my original paper here; I wish to see that.’
He again said: ‘No, we have not got it, it
is in the postofilce at London.’ ‘What do
you mean?’ I asked. Pray let me see the
paper I left here half an hour ago.’ ‘Well,’
he said, ‘if you must see it, we will get it
back in a few minutes; but it is now in
London.’ He rang a bell, and in five min-
utes or so, produced my message. rolled up
in pas teboard.
“It seems that for some months there has
existed a pneumatic telegraph betwixt Glas-
gow and ondou, and betwixt London and
the other principal cities of the Kingdom,
which consists oi an iron tube into which
the messages'are thrown and sent to their
destination. I inquired if I might see a
message sent. ‘Oh yes, come ’rc‘lund here.’
He slipped a number of messages into the
pasteboard scroll, popped it in the the tube,
and made a. signal. I put my ear to the
tube and heard a slight rumbling noise, for
17 seconds, when a bell rang beside me, in-
dicating that the. scroll had arrived at the
General Post Office, 400 miles 011‘! It al-
Who knows but we may be conveyed in
this marvelous manner before many years?
Perhaps you are aware that there has
been a_largc tube between the General Post
Ofiice in_ London _and the station in Euston
Square,_in operation for a number Ofycars.
The mail bags for the north are all sent by
this conveyance, so that the Post Office re-
ceiyes letters up to a few minutes before the
train leaves, three miles 011‘. The transit
takes less than two seconds i Surely this is
an age of wonders.”
Will the pneumatic tube in Broadway ev-
er take us up town at this rate, or the Post-
Oiiice Department ever take less than twen-
ty-four hours to carry a letterfrom the Bat-
tery to 155th street? -
