DARIEN.
The last reception of the spring term at
the Darien Seminary for young ladies, of
. which institution Mrs. Emily A. Rice is
; principal, came off last Friday evening.
Notwithstanding the storm there was a
large attendance and the entertainment

Q‘The pews in the Presbyterian church
are tobe sold at auction, for the ensuing
year, on Wednesday evening, at 8 o’clock.

‘ The‘Episcopal ladies hold their Strawber-
ryeud Floral Festival on Wednesday and
Thursday evenings, and will be glad to wel-
come their friends from adjoining towns.
The ladies, at Kent, last week, met with
very fair success.
SAUGATUCK.
The new Bridge across the Harbor does
not seem to be auselcss institution after all.
Mr. Denmead, the draw tender, states that
1591 vehicles crossed the structure during
the month of May. This number is given
from actual count. Fifty-one per day, on
the average, is not bad for the first season.

The first Floral Festival of the season
comes off at Jones’ Hall onWednesday even- ~
ing. A very pleasing entertainment is an-
ticipated . '
At the annual meeting of the New York
& Ridgefield Railroad Company, held on

The CA? ordinance constituting the "May-
or and dermen a Board of Health, author-
izes .them, or any one of them, to visit any

The Ninth Regiment hold their annual
reunion for all members at Bridgeport, on
the anniversary of the battle of Baton

Work wil begin on the new building of
tho Singer Sewmg Machine Company at
Bridgeport this week. The main building
Will be 800 feet long, 50 wide and three sto-
ries high. ' -
Three men at work on a house in Bridge-
port. on Saturday, fell with the scaffolding,
a. distance of 20 feet to the ground. One,
Lewrs Judson, had two ribs broken, and re-
ceived other injuries; the other two were
. but slightly hurt. .

A Bridgeport, man has struck gold on
some land of his: near the Stepney depot.
Ore has been recently dug up that, when
analyzed, was found to contain 2% per cent
orcop ,undo‘ne’dollar in gold to a ton of
ore. e veins from which this ore is taken
are several feet in thickness, and branch off
under the hills to a great distance.

. days ago, has been identified as that of
Christian G. » Richards of Bridgeport, by
John Richards, a brother, Morris Kesse of
New York, and the keeper of the board-
uug house where Richards stopped. Christ-
iou Riehards was invited by his brother to
wait him'in New York, before the latter
should go to Europe on important private
busmess, and his supposed that while on
his wa there, on the boat, he was assassin-
ated, t en robbed, and his body thrown
overboard. No clue has been obtained to
the murderer. The brotherbaused the body
to beexhumedto identify it properly, and
then had it reinterred at City. Island, prom-
icing.- to have it removed to a'cemetery near
th York on his return from Europe. '

Rev. A. L. Stone, formerly of Boston, but
nCwa resident of California, has recently
some of the results of his personal experi-
ence in California. Of the Chinamen he
says: .
I like the Chinese. The better class of
Chinese merchants are patterns of courtesy,
dignity,- and hospitality; and even the low-
est of the Mongolian settlers are industri-
ous, quiet and peaceablc, and, after a little
training, admirable servants for the garden,
the manufactory, and the home. They are
coming in upon us at the rate of about one
thousand a month. These figures do not
measure their absolute increase, for some-
times‘half as many, perhaps, sail westward
each month. There is with us a demand
for the labor, and a better reward for it than
any other spot on earth ofl‘ers. They are
comin , and they will come. The vastla-
bor fie do on the,continent which we have
only just begun to till—which is not yet par-
cellcd out, nor even mapped—will welcome
and absorb them. ’ The busy day of Ameri--
can toil, we must remember, is now in its
young morning. The dew is not ofi‘ the
grass yet. Before high noon we shall need
more additional hands than all who now
tread this soil. The wealth of strong arms
and willing minds is beyond that of riches,
of gold and silver. Ta e up alump of gold
from the mines. You think there is so much
added to the national treasure; bring in a
live man; what is be worth? “His weight
in gold.” [Applause] Wilderness and
grairie wait for them. They are better
hristians than the men who pelt them with
brickbats and abuse. [Applause] Their
golden rule is older than the New Testa-
ment. And what is our Christianity worth
if in a hand-to-hand grapple with this hea-
thenism under our own sky, it cannot hold
its own? “ But do they not bring down the
price of labor ‘1’” It that were a fact, capi-
tal need not quarrel with it. Civilization in
its manifold progress is expedited by this
labor; and asit advances new needs are al-
ways springing up. The number and vari-
ety of industrial callings are increased. But
how do they affect practical morals ? They
are temperate and peaceable: Inever saw
an intoxicated Chinaman; order] and obe-
dient to the laws. “ Thievish i” 0; not as
a class, not in advance of the popular per-
centage, The percentage of crime in Chi-
nadom with us is one-ha f the percenta c of
the same crime in the Celtic element in an

of bank robbers and gigantic speculative
frauds. Now and then they like a chicken
