Our Senator, by one of his recent outbursts
' of eloquence .with which Our fellow-citizens
are so familiar, is thus characterized by Mrs
Ames, the gifted authore’ss of “ A Woman’s
Letters from Washington,” in. “ The Jill“-
pendant: " ,
Our dull morning in the Senate is bright-
ening considerably, as many another has
done which has dawned-for us a nough.
The dry bones of the old Georgia bl rea ly
rattle with new life at the ring of the brief
and brilliant wards Of Senator Fe , of
Connecticut. ‘ General Ferry is a so dies-
senator, aud, ‘if for that only, is entitled to
especial regard. He is, besides, a lawyer of
fine repute, an orator in temperament
and utterance. A man with The capacity-
for emotion and enthusiasm which can car-
ry him out and above his ordinary self, his
mental endowment being equal, is always
an orator. Such a one is Senator Ferry.
It is with real painthat we remember that
imperfect health curtails his power of speech
in the Senate. He is one of the noblest
looking men here—dark-haired and’ eyed,
with head and features of the highest' typ8,
clearly cut and classic, without a touch of
efi'eminacy.
After hours and hours of men taking
through their noses, of their fumbling . over
folios, of their mumbling almost down to
their boots, I wish you could feel the satis-
faction of starting, and really listening to a
thrilling voice and to thrilling words like
these: it , .-
“ In God’s name, sir, are we now in this
day—we, the champions of the rights of
man; we who have ouuded our faith upon
the Declaration of Independence—are we to
begin again the old, miserable Leéompton
schemes of iniquit and outrage, onl chan-

“ t was the indomitable love 0 our peo-
lee for those principles—for the great prin-
ciple, above all, that all just governments
are founded upon the consent of the govern-
ed—that strengthened the arm of your citi-
zen soldiery all through the toil and labor
and blood of the recent war. It is that deep
and abiding love of the fundamental princi-
pies upon which free governments rest that
‘ s made the people stand by us all through
the contest of reconstruction, and which has
asSIgned Andrew Johnson to the infamy he
so well deserves. It has caused the people
to overlook errors we may have committed.
It has caused the People to judge us lenient-
ly at all times._ tgathers them about us
now. But 511‘, if we here, on any pretense,
subvertlthose very principles for which the
hearts of our people beat so Warmly, we
shall strike upon a rock on' which the Re-
publlcpIn party itself may split and go

The Erie Railway.
Probably noIrailway in the country has
been so persrstently misrepresented as the
Erie. Charges of every kind have been
brought against its managers. The condi-
tion of the read, its accommodations and fa-
cilities for travel, have been studious] mis-
stated, and interested parties have u ed the
public car With calumnies against'it. Ev-
ery accident or delay—no matter how uilai
voidable—has been ma 'fied and‘distorted,
and the slightest irregu arity has been laid ‘
hold of to furnish an argument against the
road. Fora time these reports had an ef— -
feet upon the people, and gained their end,
thatI of prejudicin ' the traveling public
against the road. ut the tide has turned,
and it has at last been discovered that the
‘ charges, so persistently made, were unfound-
Ied, and calculated to mislead travelers by
Inducing them to take other and more circuv
itous modes ofjourneying. The fact is, that
the public have found, from their own expe-
rience, that the Erie Railway, in the com-
forts and conveniences which it affords to
passengers, in safety and reliability, is sec-
ond to no route from the metropolis to the
west. It has spacious and luxurious coach-
es, furnished with the elegance of a splen-
did parlor, and supplied with every conven-
ience that even the most epicurean traveler
can desire. Its sleeping cars are models of
taste and beauty, and offer to the weary
traveler 9. Sleeping apartment as near the
comfort of a bed room as railroad journey-
ing will admit. Those who have traveled
over the road and satisfied themselves of its
advantages are amazed at the attacks that
have appeared against it. So far from fipd-
mg this route less safe, convenient or com-
fortable than other lines of travel they agree
thatnn many respects the Erie Railway is.
superior to any and all of them. Itlands
the western-bound Ipassenger either at Buffa-
lo, Dunkirk, Cleve and or Cincinnati, with-
out change of cars, over a broad gauge track
more smooth and comfortable than is affor-
ded' by any other route. These facts have
at last become ap arent.
. The slanders emulated by the opposing
interests have lost their force, and pea is
now prefer to take this line, being sati cd
of its merits as a thrOugh route to the West.

the increased sale of tickets in all t e (len-
tral 0mces, and the long passenger trains
every morning and even1ng._
The Company has been led by the influx
of travel to construct additional sleeping
coaches which surpass all hitherto design-
ed, m beauty and luxury. "
