The damp Weather of last week tended greatly to
advance foliage and early crops. Strawberries have
felt its influence to in extent, which, we are inform.
ed, may insure their success. The vast number of
iields abounding in this region, are white with blos-
soms, and growers feel confident bf realizing good
prices. or onions, about twice the usual number, in.

ed look well and are doing finely. The hocing and
weeding process has already commenced, and capa-
ble boys are beginning to secure their pin money. If
seed sellers are to be believed, more onion seed has
been bought and sold this year than during any sea-

appointed. Large quantities of potatoes are also
planted, but nothing near the number put in last
year. a

Frightened by the threats of people— the numer-
ous petitions to the Legislature looking to removal,
and the thorough ventilation in your columns which
we have endeavored to effect, the Goose Island bene-
boiliug, stench-making, health-and—comfort-destroy-
ins family are pulling up stakes, and will soon de
part, bag and baggage to some unknown place—we ,
hope far distant. In a few weeks clams will again
grow among the sands of this once beautiful isle, and
the fisherman can drop his anchor at “ Channel
Rock," “ Monserat,” the “ Old Whale” and “Wood’s
Rocks," as in days of yore, pulling in the black flsh,
unannoyed by a cause which we never wish to speak
of again.
Having sold out our interest. we had about made
up our mind to relinquish all thoughts of saw mills
and have nothing to do with them or their owners.
Under this determination wc.passed a period of some
two months in comparative peace and quietness;
but new, owing to a. rush, as pgr frequent ruins,—
the beauties of Nature, or some other hallucinations,
we have been daily beset by those already'in, or who
are about to engage in a business which we so re-
cently abandoned. One man asked us the other day
what we used to charge a footfor sawing, and what
we did with the slabs ‘2 Another: “Have you, any
surface rules laying around loose that you could give
to afallowj" find one; more;beld than the rest, want-
ed to know if we, had any old saws left over that we
could sell “ cheap.” etc. Taking it all in all, we
almost wish we were again among the chips and saw
dust, thinking it might be turned to good advantage.

The appointment of Hon. Thes. B. Butler to the
Chief J ustieeship of Connecticut, to fill the vacancy
caused by the death of Mr. Hinman. gives universal
satisfaction here. . ‘ '
The Advertizer came out yesterday in a new dress
and greatly enlarged. We hope soon to see it trans-
formed into a weekly paper.
Ifnothing happens to the apple trees, which by r-
their numerous blossoms remind one of years gone
by, there will be an abundance effruit this year.
Belden is working like a Trojan for the Naugatuck
Valley R. R. Under his administration the subscrip-
tions have been raised from $25,000 to something
over 890,000. The more hopeful are looking for an
early consummation of that figure so ardently de‘
sired, viz: $100,000. With that reached we will or-
ganize a Company and build a few miles of the road
at any rate.
Representative Lees presented the “ Goose Island
Nuisance Petition ” to the House, on Thursday last.
It was referred to the proper committee, and will,
we hope, be heard from in a few days. PAUL.

The Bridgeport fire department held their
annual parade, Tuesday. Penn Hose com-
pany N0. 31, of Philadelphia, were invited
guests on the occasion.
The clams along the Stratiord shore have
got some disease which is killing them off.
A correspondent of the Bridgeport Standard
calls it the'cholera.
_A lad named Lewis Johnson made a
mistep in 9. Bridgeport factory Monday, and
fell through an elevator, a distance of about
20 feet. He was badly bruised.
A little boy fell from a boat in which he
had drifted out into the middle of a mill
pond, near Bridgeport, recently, and as he
was gomg down for the last~time, was res-
cued by a brave woman, Mrs. Katie Hunt,
. ,who swam out to him from the shore.
Mrs. E. Disbrow had a shoulder dislo-
cated at Bridgeport, Monday, by being run
over by a runaway team. -
One case of genuine small pox has ap-
peared in a boardinfi house on East Main
street—Standard. '

over-exertion in jumping the rope.
The National Pahquioque bank of Dan-
bury has declared a semi-annual dividend
of six per cent.
The News has been giving evidence of fi-
nancial prosperity by again enlarging its
borders; _adding about three columns by
lengthening out its columns. It also an-
no nces its adoption of the advance pay-
m tprihciple for all subscriptions.
Hatting is perceptibly slackening. It has
been along trade and zygood one.
The parsonage of the First Congregation-
al Society is to be enlarged and improved.
Additional land has been added to the lot,
and a barn is to be put up. .
The action of the Star of Hope is com-
mendable. It has unanimously voted to
celebrate Decoration Day in a body, 'and

The introduciion of water into the City
of Norw1ch, Ct. was celebrated by a. grand
procession of the, military and civic socie-
ties. The rcsevoir, which'is situated about
two miles from the city‘ covers about 65
acres, and contains‘ about 350,000,000 gal-
lons of water, there being an average depth
-of 16 feet. The water is conducted through
cement-lined wrought iron pipes, and is of
unusudl purity and excellence. ‘

met at the First National Bank on Tuesday
day last. The reports rendered were very
satisfactory indeed. 0n the first of May
over one mile of the road was graded, and
by the first of June over three-miles will be
completed. It was voted to call in, on the
15th of June, 10 per cent. more of the stock.
The cost of the work is aciuall much be-
low the engineer’s estimates. he annual
meeting will be helden the 7th of June at
