' WESTPORT.
Fickleness, thy name is—weather. It has
sung more changes during the past week
than Ppe’s immortal jingle of “The Bells.”
Thursday opened bland, mild and genial,—
was excessively warm at three, and at five
o’clock “ blew great guns,” accompanied
with thunder and lightning ‘and rain, the
like of which is seldom heard or seen except
{a
e.
in July. A damp, drizzling night succeeded, ,
and Friday was passed amid smiles and
‘ tears. Saturday was again fine. One is at
a loss to interpret all this. It “holds .the
word Of promise to the ear, but breaks it to
the hope.” You predict one thing and it is
sure' to do just ‘the reverse. Like some
women saying. “No,” it means “Yes.”
After a sojourn of Several months in
Georgia, Mr. John Gray returned to his
home in Westport, greatly improved in
health and appearance.
The funeral of Mr. Solomon Gray took
place on Tuesday last. During the com-
mittal service at Christ Church Cemetery,
an incident happened which so disturbed
the solemnity of the scene as to be worthy
of note. The body had been lowered into
the grave, the Rev. Mr. Williams had pro.
nounced “earth to earth, ashes to ashes,
dust to dust,” and was in the midst of the
passage—“I heard a voice from heaven
saying unto me,” 850., and all minds were
filled with those thoughts which the death
of a fellow mortal‘ alone can suggest, when
suddenly a horse, fastened to the outer
fenée, took fright, burst his reins, dashed
down the hill Over the “old bridge,” and up
the Weston road,cOmpletely demolishing
the vehicle to which he was attached, and
severely injuring himself before being
caught. In the meantime the startled crowd
around the grave, with all due respect for
the deceased, and for the solemn rites being
performed, uncertain as to Whether a house
was on fire or the last trump had sounded,
were unable to bestow their undivided
attention.
A few days since Capt. Francis Bennett,
of the sloop George Law, had the miSfortune
to be stricken down with paralysis. For a
time one side of him was com'pletely power-
. less, but he is now just'a little better, and
possibly may recover. ' _
On Saturday last somebody set fire to the
leaves and 'underbrush on the east side of
Bali Mountain, and as no efforts were made
to extinguish it made a complete circuit of
.- that elevation, killing, we fear, many of the
young evergreen trees that thrive in that
locality. It was still burning early on
Sunday morning.
The Goose Island nuisance still remains
a stench' in the nostrils of- every man,
woman and child within a radius of ten
miles. Several petitions to the Legislature
looking to its abatement or removal are in
circulation, but as yet the immense cauldron
boils, and the unearthly efil’uvia floats upo
the air. .
It is currently i'eported that Mrs. P. Bur-
ritt and Son are taking steps for the Sale of
their magnificent home at Saugatuck, and
Will. so soon as it is effected take their de-
parture for some place for remote. When a
family of wealth and standing in society,
beloved and respected by a large circle of
friends, as we know they are, leave a town
where they have so long resided, we cannot
but express With many others, a. word of re-
gret.
The Spring campaign for trout-fishing has
fairly opened. Already do we hear me rat-
tling of rods, and the din from_ sharpening
hooks, and if -the great outcry for . “ gut,”
“ snell” and“ fly” is any indication, some-
thing terrible in the way of “catching” is at
hand. . Let him who first catches a five
- pounder, give a feast to his piscatorial b'reth-
ren—Cigars in order.
The venerable Morris‘ Ketchum, Esq.,
hale and hearty, was in town last week,
after passing the Winter in Savannah, Ga.
Through Mr. J onathan‘ Camp, recently re-
cently returned from that place, we learn
that Mr. Ketchum has the only Banking In-
stitution of any importance there, and in -
addition, he and his Sons are doing a thriv-
ing business in the mefcantile line. Mr.
Camp reports as his experience (barring a
rheumatic infliction which overtook hiin)
that one of the few really enjoyable meth-
ods Of living, is to tarry a Summer at the
Noi'th, and a Winter at the South.
It is rather early yet,but we wish to make
a suggestion relative to the manner in which
the coming “Fourth” shall be celebrated.
For one we are heartily sick of “Fantastic”
processions as a means of exhibiting pa-
triotism and fostering the memory of great
events. Give us sensible parades, intelli-
gent gpeeches, good music, &c., &c., and we
are quite sure every good citizen will par—
ticipate, and gladly assist in defraying the
expenses. PAUL. ,

The stores of H. N. Fanton, Fred Starr,
and Augustus Hoyt, and the postoflice, in
» Danbury, were entered on Wednesday night
of last week and robbed of money and oth-
er valuablesto the amount of about forty
dollars. The letters in the postoflicc were
undisturbed, as were also the postage
.stamps in an adjoining. drawer. “The bur-
glar was evidently an apprentice to the bus-
iness and exhibited more daring than dis-
cretion. . ' ‘
Envious people should not always trust to
first impressions. A venerable lat of a
rather credulous turn of mind, an poor
stretch of wisdom, saw a‘pa'ir 0t grays da'sh
by' her window one day last week, and in
the agony of envy, she shook her fist at the
establishment, and cried out: “-Ride, darn
ye; it’ll be my turn by and by." 'lhe hand-
some grays were attached to a hearse.,—.

The letter H must be a favorite in theo-
logical seminaries. Danbury has five min-
isters-H of whom possess the letter H as an
initial. Hubbard, Hayden, Hawley, Has-
kell and Hatfield. - .
_ A meeting of the committee appointed at
the last borough meeting to procure and
erect a suitable fire alarm bell or bells, was
held at borough hall, on Tuesday evening,
when it was voted that a committee bein-
structed to procure and erect a suitable fire
bell, the cost of which is not to exceed one
thousand dollars.

Hon. Truman Smith delivered his message
on. Temperance, in Seeiy’sHaIl, Tuesday
evening.
On and after Monday, May 2d, the Steamer
Shippan will make daily trips, touching at
Greenwich each way.
A large engine house is being built near
‘ 4 the depot by the Railroad company. It will
have room for a dozen engines.
0. Bunten & 00., Of Stamford, has made
s contract with the Ridgefield railroad to
build a number of strong Carts. suitable for
railroading purposes. ’ ‘
This collection District, comprising the
towns of Stamford, Greenwich and Darien,
pay this year into the United States Treas-
ury, for income and license taxes, upwards
of $50,000.
The traveller going north from Stamford,
will find a new-land mark in the shape of a
church spire about half a dozen miles from
the village. It is the new M. E. Church of
the Farms district recently located.
The senator elect from this district, the
representatives from Stamford, and several
of their prominent‘friends and supporters,
celebrated their late victo by a champaigne
dinner at 'the Stamford ouse, on Saturday
evening last. .
We are glad to learn that the health of
Hon. Thomas B. Butler is steadily im-

Chas. Holmes fell from. the rigging of s
sloop in New York and broke his arm near-
the elbow.
At the target match of the Home Guards,
the following prizes were awarded: First
prize, a handsome silve‘r- cake basket, to Je-
rome Reeves; second prize, a silver goblet
with a gold lining, to J obn Bowlcs; third
prize, asilver flower vase, to John Horton.

The Superior Court has just apppointed
Jugde O. S. Se mour, Thomas Sanford and
D. Comstock, ommissioners, to enquire in-
to and report regarding the disagreement
between the town of Greenwich and the N.
Y. & N: H. R. R. 00., in the matter of
straightening and widening the road ap-
proaching the depot. The Commissioners
will meet early in June. .
—Judge Abraham Russell, of New York,
died of apoplexy on Tuesday morning.
—On Wednesday the 27th, the democrat-
ic state convention of New York nominated
for chief justice of the court of appeals,
Sanford E. Church, and for associate jus-
tices, Martin Grover, William F. Allen,
Charles A. Rapallo, and Rufus W. Peckham.
On Thursday the 28th, the Republicans
nominated for chief justice, Henry R. Sel-
den; for assistant judges, Charles Mason,
Charles Andrews, Charles J. Folger, and
Robert S. Hale. - -
—The murder of the. rough P. O'Day in
New York has drawn attention to the fate
ofa gang of eight desperadoeS‘ who, less
than six months ago were alive and in good
health. Three-have since been murdered in
drunken midnight brawls, two are in the
state priSOn for prize fighting, and the other
three in prison charged with the murder of
a comrade in crime.
—On the first Sunday of free liquor selling
in New York, when the liquor dealers uus
derstood that 1e islative'action 'on the ex-
cise laW left no unday clause in force, and
the police exercised no surveillance over
them, there were‘four murders in the city.
