paragraph in the report of the Secretary of
l the Navy which refers to New London :
“Eighty-three (83) acres of land on the
Thames river, mar New London. were
some tune since given by the state or Con-

stallon at that place. In conformity with
this understanding the department his

actually establishing the new station with-

General Sherman in his report, submitted
to Congress Monday, opposes any further
reduction of the army. He says the entire
army 18 on duty, and he has constant calls
for troops whith cannot be granted. He
calls the President’s earnest attention to
this matter, that Congress may be appeal-
el to not to diminish the military estab-
lishment any further, because of the great
extent of the country, the unsettled charac-
ter of a large region, measured north, south,
east and west by thousands of miles, the
part in the conversation. ‘
