' WASHINGTON, Dec. 6th, 1869.
DEAR GAZETTE z—Leaving N orwalk, in
the M to 8 a. m., train on Saturday last, and
New York on the 12:30 train for Washing-'
ton, we reached here at about half-past elev-
en the same night, three hours behind time, .
inwardly resolving never to be caught on
the mid-day train again and to warn all our
Friends to avoid it. A more weary, tedious
and vexatious day’s travel we have not ex-
perienced since—we went to Washington
the last time. But there are degrees of mis-
ery and we would advise all our readers
contemplating a trip to the national Capitol
to take the 8:30 a. m., or 9:30 p. m., trains
out of New York, and not be deluded as
we were to investing in a dirty Washington
drawing-room car, for a dreary day’s cruci-
fixion. And all this misery comes of the
Railroad management advertising to the
public to do what they never attempt to
perform. When will Railroad managers
learn to imitate the example set them by
Editors and publish nothing but the truth?
Most of the. Senators and Members are
already here ready for to-day’s organization.
The flutter among “ gentee " landladies has
been unusually vigorous, and never before
were so many “apartments richly furnished,
to let to Congressmen.” Probably in no city.
on the globe is there so much proud‘poverty
and genteel misery, and nowhere on the
foctstool are so many dependent for a liv-
ing on “ apartments to let.” Washington
might well ,be denominated one vast cu-
campment of boarding-heuscs and boarding-
honse landladies, whose tales of former for-
tune and early splendors of social position,
are all sterreotype, yet nevertheless outdaz-
zle all the golden Arabian Night’s iuv eu-
tions.—f‘ Pity tis, tis true."
Sen ‘ r Fei'ry and family are most com-
fortabfidomiciled at our old head-quarters,
at Mrs.’Berry's on “ G.” St., between 14th
and 15111, in the rooms occupied by General
Nye for the last half. dozen sessions. Gov-
ernor Buckingham is house-keeping in his
elegant mansion at 410 14th Street. A gen-
erous hospitality will rO doubt be dispensed
to his Connecticut “constituency" during
the coming session. The gay and festively
inclined are calculating upon a Winter of
more than ordinary display and social
hilarity. -
What are to be the leading measures of
legislation, have not yet developed. The
Reports of the various Departments are un-
usually satisfactory. The hotels are filled
with politicians, sabemers and the old hordes
of familiar-faced “lobby bummers”—More

THE PACIFIC 'RAILBOAD52— Vice-Presi-
dent Huntington of the Central Pacific.
Railroad, president Amos and Secretary
Rollins Of the Union Pacific Railroad, and
Director Wilson for the Government, met
with Secretary Boutwell, on Saturday, and
finally adjusted all difl‘erences betweerdthese
two railroadlines. The Secretary paid to
the Central Pacific $1,500,000 in bonds,
which that road at; once turned over to the
Union Pacific as part Of the purchase mon-
ey for section between Ogden and Prom-
ontory. This completes the Government
issue of bonds for the entire line ofthe road
and the junction will hereafter be at Ogden.
It may be stated, as a fact of interest, that
the Central Pacifiegets no pay for grading
done this side of Promontory, and the Un-
ion Pacific gets, nothing for work done on
the other side of that place.
