Our Widower.
I, Axmruun, an ancient damsel ot' uncer-
tain age, selicits the sympathy of the read.
er, underthe infliction I am obliged to sub-
mit to of'living next door to a widower ; no

luge you with tears, and reminiscences of 1110
dear departed. Ah, no I Icould get along
with all that very well, so long as the dem-
onstrations were sincere; but our Gustavus
Adolphus has been through the several
stages, from hopeless grief and graceful res-
ignation to subdued happiness and pleasure
In the society of his married companions and
friends of his Iatcwife, and now has merged
in all his glory to that most laughable and
ridiculous of all laughable and ridiculous
things—a widower in search of a wife.
'No matter how old a ’man is, if he loses
his wife and looks for another, he always is
sure to make an unmitigatediool and nuis-
ance of himself. 0
He uses hair dye, and all sorts of oils and
restoratives ; perfumes his whiskers, spends
endless sums at the dentists, and flutters him-
s'elfthat no one'suspeets that he has passed
the early bloom of youth. And don’t be
pride himself on his power of making an im—
pression on the female heart ?
When he first entered society after his be-
reavement, he made Mrs. Wiggins’, relict of
Peter Wiggins, hearty happy by sympathet-
ic communings , at when the weed left his
hat, he left Mrs. W., and honored Garlic Sew-
cll, a spiuter of forty with his attentions.
But, with the diSappearance of his black
suit, he disappeared from Miss S’s horison ;
and, with the appearance of the cult-colored
pants he appeared in it still younger circle,
flitting round promiscuously with the maid-
ens from twenty-five to thirty-five.
When his white but appeared, ho appear-
ed also with a lady of twenty, and he has
just gone simpering and giggling past the-
honse, with his huge hands encased in lem-
on-colorcd kids, twirling a rattan cane, and
in company with a girl Of sixteen.
I don’t think the girls care for him, or that
there is more than one or two in the village
that would marry him. They just walk,

Franklin’s Wife.
To promote her husband’s interests, she
attended itgiiis little shop, where she bought
rugs, sew-ed pamphlets, folded newspapers,
and sold the few articles in which he dealt,
such as ink, papers, lampblaek, banks, and
o'hcr stationery. At the same time she was
an excellent housekeeper, and besides being
economical herself, taught her somewhat
careless, discrdérlyi husband to be economi-
cal also. Sometimes Franklin was clothed
from head to foot in garments which his
wife had both woven and made, and for a
long time she performed all the work of the
house without the assistatec of a servant.
Nevertheless, she knew how to be liberal
at proper times. Franklin tells us that for
some years after his marriage, his breakfast
was bread and milk, which they ate out ofa
twopeuny earthen vessel, with a pewter
spoon; but one morning, on going down to
breakfast, he fouad‘upon the table a beauti-
ful china bowl, from-which his bread and
milk was steaming, with a silver spoon hyits
Slzlt‘, which had cost a sum equal in our our-
rency to $10. When he expressed his aston-
ishment at this .nuwonted splendor, Mrs.
Franklin only remarked that she thought
her husband deserved a silver spoon and
china bowl as much as any of his neighbors.
Franklin prospered in his business until
he became the most famous editor and most
fl :uiishiug prints-r in America, which gave
him the pleasure of relieving his wife from
the cares of business, and enabled him to
par- ride for her a spacious and wellfurnish-
ed abode. She adorned a high station as
- well as she had borne a lowly one, and pre-
sided at her husband‘s liberal table as grace-
fully as when he eat his breakfast of bread
and milk from a two penny bowl.-Purton‘s
