. Summer seems likely to burst upon us in
the midst of winter, without the usual Spring
lnterregnnm. The snow, which has been
piling, up from storm after storm during the
past three months, until it had overtopped
our fences and blockaded our roads, has sud.
denly assumed the melting mood and is last
disappearing. Itiis well known to our farm-
ers that we have, this spring, but very little

Already, our people see the signs of an
active season. _
The oystermen, who have had an uncom-
monly. dull winter-many of them loosing
more than a month of ordinary busy time—
nre tinkering at their boats, fixing up their
‘ sails, looking up and repairing their dredges
and rakes, and otherwise preparing for their
summer labors. The farmers, too, are look-
ing to their hotbed frames, repairing and
glazing the same, fixing their plows,harrows
and other farming utensils, stirring up their
fertilizers, repairing their fences, etc., etc.
.Our mechanics, also, are .likely to have a
busy season. , Mr. William Hoyt, the carpen-
ter who has,been laid up half the winter with
a lame hand, is getting well, and has a heap
of Work before him. So, also, has the
Messrs. Millspaugh, Chassmer & Fallon, and
Themes do Rite.
Mr. Elias Pennoyer who has kept his ex.
celient school for young people open during
the winter, we are sorry to hear, talks of soon
closing it. It is greatly regretted by many
here, that our school officers did not secure
the services of Mr. P. for our district school.
His high, scholarly attainments, and his bap-
py factslty of securing both the afiection and
attention of his pupils, make him a teacher
of rare excellence. We hope next year to
hear of his being at the head of the finest
district school in Fairfield County.
There is considerable talk about building
a bridge across our lower river, connecting at
the road from Horwalk where it comes out
the landing near Mr, Pennoyer’s school, with
the road to Darien. Also, it is proposed to
open a new road. from the Darien road,
whereit takes an abrupt turn between Mr.
Stephen Ferris and Mr. Selleck’s house, at
Mr. Williamson’s and run this new road
across the bills out to the Darien Corners,
the; making" a fine, wide drive along the
shore, all the way from Nor Walkto Stamford.

Methodist church in this place, after a s'er-~
man by Rev. Mr. Pease, Rev. Mr. Hatfield
the pastor administerted the ordinance of
baptism to 21 persons-nearly all of whom
were adults and heads of families—This
makes 05 persons Mr. Hatfield bps baptised
during the great revival in his church. More
than 150 have been converted, the greater
part of whom ha've united with the Method-
ist church—Advocate. '

Col. Nelson L. White and Mr. Edgar S.
Tweedy have been appointed a committee to
prepare plans and specifications and to esti-
' ny'ate the cost of building a new Court House
Jail, and City Hall. The old Court House
property is offered for sale. Several sites for
the new buildings are in view, but none‘ of
which have yet been decided upon. The
committee have been to New Haven .and
Bridgeport inspecting the court houses in
those places to make an estimate of the cost
'of a new building, '
Mr. John Knapp and'his son, Isaac H., of
this town, who went to Europe, in Novem-
ber last, for the health of the latter. have re-
turned home. While gone they made quite
a tour through England and Scotland, and
bod an enjoyable. time. The younger Mr.
Knapp received considerable benefit from the
voyage—Timed. _
A new Hose Company with John Scott as
- Foreman, has been organized, consisting of
20 members employee of Tweedy & Co.
We understand that the Rev. H. Powers
has received a loud call to take charge of a
new church enterprise in Brooklyn, N. Y.
The people of the West St. church won’t let
him go if they can help it.
Silas Veils was run away with last Satur-
day evening and badly hurt. .
The Republican Senatorial and Probate
convention meet next Wednesday, at 10
o'clock, at the Pahquioque Hotel.

tion, are next to worthless; because the peo-
ple take little or no interest in them ' avatd,
as far as possible, all pecuniary efforts to
promote and sustain them and permit the
school houses, all of them,- to fall below a
proper standard, and, some of them, below a
good barn, in'respect to finish, repair, and
general taste and convenience. .

that we have any. We need a goon one, for
political purposes, .for fairs, festivals, balls,
lectures, and other desirable and respectable
entertainments. Then we should have-fcwer
of those interior and worthless exhibitions,

their vulgar manners and disgusting conduct

,who happens to be present. It rs rumored
that the directors of the bank propose to de~
molrsh their old building, and erect a sub-
stantial brick edifice in its place, With a fine
hall in an upperstory. If they do it, they will

sought to locate a large manufacturrng busi-
ness in our village. Seifishness, andextrav-

Rev. John Eaton Smith, Rector of the
Memorial church of the Holy Trinity, has
gone to California for the benefit of his
health, accompanied .by a brother. They
sailed from New York Saturday week. May

We are glad to hear that a Grant and Jew-
ell, Club has been organized, and trust that
every republican will enroll his name on the

The Standard says that Mr. Geo. Bunnell,
the Westport showman, during the late con-
_flagration of Barnum's Museum, lost two
lions and several other animals, which were
on exhibition with Van Amburgh’s collection
at the Museum. *
A few days since, says the Standard, Miss
Emily Burr, daughter of Mr. Eben Burr, of
Fairfield while on a visit at the house of her
sister, Mrs. Mary Jenningsof Green’s Farms,
accidentally fell into a cistern in the cellar of
the house, the cover of which had been in-
advertently left off, and was onlysayed from
drowning, by the timely exertions of her
brother-in-law, Mr. Jennings, who fortunate-
ly happened to be at home. The water in
the cistern was about ten feet deep. A lucky
escape.
