THE YANKEE PEDIAR —There is a
sheriff residing in Illinois who Was “taken
in and done for” on one occasion. He
made if. a prominent part of his business
to ferret out and punish pcdlars for trav-
eling through the State without a. license;
but one morning he met his match in the
persOn of a genuine Yankee pddler.
“What have you got to sell—any-
thing?" asked the sheriff.
“Yeas, sartin; what d’ye want? Got
razors, fust; that’s an article you need,
squire, I should say by the look of your
baird. Got good hiackiu’; ’twill make
them old boots of yourn shine so’t you can
shave in ’crn e’uemost. Balm of Clnmby,
too, only a dollar a bottle; good for the
ha’r, and assisten poor human natur, as
the poet says.”
And so he rattled on. At length the
sheriff bought a bottle of the Balm of
Columbia, and in reply to the question
whether he wanted anything else, that
the Yankce’s license for_p€-ddling in Illi-
nois, that. being his duty as sheriff. _
The Yank showed hint a document,
fixed up good and strong, in black and
white. Tire sheriff looked at it, and pro-
nounced it all right. Then handing buck
the bottle to the pcdlar, he said.
"I don’t think, now that I’ve bought
this stuff, I shall ever want it. I reckon
I might as well sell gt back to you.
.What will you give for it?”
"Oh! the darn srnfl‘is no use to me,
but seein’ it’s you, sheriff, I’ll give you
twenty-five cents for it, fyou really don’t
want it.”
The sheriff handed ever the bottle at
the large discount frornnrs own porches;
and received his changt.
“Non,” said the pdlar, “I’ve got a
question to ask you. Have you got any
pedlnr's license uboutyour trowsers any-
where?"
“No; I lrav’nt any use for the article,

On Tuesday last, Cpl. Obcd Swain brought
into our office the had of a toggle whale-iron
that, on the 25th 0 November, 1855, when
master of ship Catwba, of this port, was
thrown from one c the boats of that ship in-

tember, 1866, Ca}. Otis F. Mamblen, mas-

where he was truck eleven years before.
The whale yielde 110 barrels Of oil. On

found, marked wh the ship’s name, “Cataw-
be," and broughttome to Capt. Swain, by
whom it was really recognized. The shank
of the iron projcting out of the blubber of
the whale was urn entirely off by the con-
trttion of the wter. but the part beneath the
skin was as perlet as when thrown from the

THE following vote was passed at a meet-
ing of the Court of But-gasses of this
Borou h held Aug. 23d, 1867, and iv pub-
lished y their order, vlz: '
“Voted, that the owners of lands within
this Borough, on, or in front of which any
trees are standing or growing, be and here
by are directed to trim said trees so that
none of the branches shall hang within
13 feet of the surface of any public walk
or highway, and that if this order shall
not be complied with, within ten (10) days
