—At a democratic meeting in IIillsborough
Ohio, on the 8th, at which Vallindiglram
was the principal speaker, one oi the craters
read what purported to be a letter written by
Abraham Lincoln in hell. The blasphemous
screed was rdccivcd with delight by the
democrats.
-—An unusual accident occurred on board
the steamer Deutschland on Saturday while
entering New York harbor. When at the
Narrows,aguu was fired, as is customary
for vessels comlng into port. A large nurn-
ber of the passengers collected near the gun,
and when fired, it exploded, instantly killing
three men and seriously wounding several
others.
—'I‘hc Litchiield county fair was held iii
Litehfitld on Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday. There was a very good show of
working oxen and young cattle, anda few
good brood mares and colts were on the
ground. Tire show of vegetables and fruits
was unusually small, but of good quality. In
the department of domestic manufacture and
fine arts, there were some very prclty speci-
mens of needlework. Professor Northrop,
of Yale College, delivered the address, which
was a fine production. Owing to the unset-
tled weather on Tuesday, there was not a
very large attendance, but on Wednesday
there was a goodly number on the grounds.
On Thursday there was a large attendance
to see the exhibition of horses, which was
very creditable. The ladies held a festival
for the brnetit of the soldiers’ monument
fund in the court house, lasting two days
and evenings, and realized about $250 for
the cause.

pearance in concert, in New York, Wednes-

lighted by gas made froin air. The cost of
this gas is very small, the light. is said to be
equal in every respect to that from coal gas,
and there is no unpleasant sme‘l connected
with it. At Hunter’s Point about 1,500 con-
sumers are supplied with this new lighting
material allot whom are more than satisfied
with it. Tire Post-office is lighted at less
than half the expense of coal gas.

Being constructed with the aid and supervision of
the United States Government. is destined to be one
the most. important and valuable railroads in the
world, as it is the sole liiik of communication be-
tween the Pacific Coast and the Great Interior Ba-
sin, and the .
Principal Portion of" the Main Stern Line be—
tween the Two Oceans.
The present. western terminus is at Sacramento,
on the navigable waters of the Pacific; but it. will
ultimately extend from Sacramento across the richest
and most populous parts of California, Nevada and
Utah, contigious to all the great Mining Regions of
the Tar West. The Company are authorized to cott-
tiiiiic their line eastward until it shall meet. and con-
nect with the roads new building cast of the Rocky
Mountaituunge.
Assuming that. they will build and control one-half
the entire distance between San Francisco and the
Missouri River, as now seems probable, the United
States will have invested iii the completion of 865
miles. $23,5t2,000, or at. the avenge rate of $35,000
per mile—not including an absolute grant of 10,000
000 acres of the Public Lands. By becoming a joint.
investor in the magnificent. enterprise, and by wai-
ving its first. lien in favor of the First. Mortgage
Boodholders, the General Government, iii effect, in-
v:tes the cooperation of private capitalists, and has
carefully guarded their interests against all ordinary
contingencies. _
The Central Pacific Railroad enjoys all the privi-
leges, grants, and subsidies conferred by the Acts of
Congress ripen the other parts of the through like,
and has, in addition, SEVERAL sezeuL, nxeLnsIvr.
ADVANTAGES applicable only to the Western Half.
I. The Company has received from the State and
chief cities of California, assistance in money,
credit, and valuable property worth over $3,000,-
000 in gold, in addition to the full benefit of the
Government subsidy. .
. The hardest. and costliest part of its construction
has been successfully overcome within the first
150 miles. In a few weeks the track will be com-
pleted entirely across the Sierra Nevndus, after
which progress to Salt Lake will be easy and
rapid. I

its complete financial success, independently of

July, upon the 94 miles then open for business,

These Bonds, authorized by Act of Congress, are
issued only as the work progresses, and to the
same amount only as the Bonds granted by the Gov-
ernment; and represent, in all cases, the first lien
upon a completed, cquippcd,and productive railroad,
in which have been invested Government. subsidies,
stock subscriptions, donations, surplus earnings, etc.
and is worth more than three times the amount of
First Mortgage Bonds which can be issued upon it.
The agreement of this Company to pay principal
and interest of their Bonds in coin, being made un-
der the Specie Contract Law of California, authori-
zing and enforcing contracts to pay gold is legally
binding, unlike similar agreements made by comptr-
nies in States where no such legislative sanction ex-
ists.
