—The work of recovering the great desert
oISahaI's in Alrics, is steadily going on in
Algeria. under the patronage of Napoleon
III, and is accomplished by boring ul'teSlan
wells. About one hundred wells are now
flowing, reclaiming the desert wherever they
are, and making the barren wastes blossom
into fertile gardens. In the district of Ouled
Riv, stretching far southward into the desert,
they are now thirty-five wells, and around
which two thousand gardens have been
formed and one hundred and fifty thousand
date trees planted. The conquest of the
desert is steadily pushed, with almost uni-
versal success. by four military boring bri

with necessary implements
—-At a recent meeting of the “ General
Association of Connecticut,"lhe following sta-
tistics were reported : Number of the Con-
figegational Churches in the state. 288; num-
r of members 40.774, of whom 15,204 are
men, and 31,51 women; additions during
the year, 658, of which 3,262 were by pro.
fessron of aith, and 1,397 by letter; remov-
als during the year, 2,412, of 860 were by
death, 1,339 by letter, and 153 by discipline;
lnpiisln—of adults. 1,409; of infants, 816;
.children in Sunday schools, 34,707 ; charities,
$330,484. Thislast item indicates an avera-
ge contribution of between four and five dol-
lars from each member. ‘
-—-A young lady bought a new basket at
St. Louis the other evening for pic-nic pur-
poses the next day. Before she left the store
the blskct with a card hearing her name at-
tached was stolen. The next morning the
basket, with a baby in it, was found at the
door of a respectable citizen. with the card
still attached, and the young lady was called
upon for on ex lsnation. which she readily
gave-and was ismisssd from the awkward
posmon.
—-Rev. Henry Ward Beecher delivered a
sermon in Plymouth church, Brooklyn, last
Sunday, on “The Nobility of Labor." in
which he said that more public men of emi-
nence had started from the business oi type-
setting than probably from any other occu-
pation. ' ,
——I‘o meet the demands of the public,
there will be issued from theC-Treasnry De-
partment, in a few weeks, an additional frac-
tiellnl currency note of the denomination of
15 cents.~ The principal embellishment on
the face of this note are an engraved likeness
of Gen. Grant on thcright hand, and oppo-
site, on the left of the note, a likeness of
Lieut, Gen. Sherman. The back of the note,
like all other late issues 01 Government
mmey, will be green, with the figure 15 on
each side of the note. The bronze ’figures
which have thus far been placed u on the
various denominations of the Unitec States
currency will be omitted on this new issue,
and for safety a peculiar kind of paper will
be substituted.

—At the constitutional convention, now in
session at Albany, N. Y., the gifted lecturer,
Geo. Wm. Curtis, recently made a masterly
plea in favor of woman suffrage. A corres.
pendent of the New York Post gives the
ibllowing comments on, and synopsis of, the -
speech:
Mr. Geo. Wm. Curtis, delegate at large, dc—
livurcd the speech of the session, this after-
noon, on the question of woman suffrage.—
His speech was finished in style, gracefully
delivered, and made a’ deep impression. The
convention listened with breathless attention,
and he was not. interrupted while speaking.
At the conclusion President Wheeler, Judge
Paige, and many others approached to con-
gratulate him. It was generally acknowl-
edged that he had presented thu subject of
woman’s right to suffrage in a more masterly
monubr than even John Stuart Mill. '
The exordium was brief. Mr. Curtis re-
fused to consider the original basis of matter
as others had before him, but treated the sub-
ject on its practical bearings and manifest
usiicc.
The male sex” be attributed to pagan barbar-
iiy. He cited Lord Gowcr. Bomers and oth-
er jurists of England to demonstrate his
points. The right to vote would be followed
by the claim to hold office. Wh not? It
was not repugnant to the law of ngland.—
The countess of Richmond, mother of Ben-
ry VII, was for many years n; justice of the
peace; Queen Mary commissioned another,
and he cited others. In this country Women
hold the office of postmistrcss.
If influence was a potent reason why we-
men should rest without the ballot, why not
also disirsnchise every man of infltlcncc,unll
let only the stupid vote ?
The chairman of the committee had de-
clared his platform to be universal amnesty
and impartial suffrage. Perhaps he was right.‘
He himself wanted to see the golden harvest
of peace wave 0ch the gory battle-field.—
But consider how the policy would work. A
mother of New York, who had educated her
son to religion and patriotism, gave him to
his country. The young man fell into the
builds of the rebels and was consigned to the
death-pen of Anderson» ille. There, worn
out by thirst, he crawled toward the pool to
obtain a drink of the foul Water, when ap-
pl‘oac'ing the dead line, the guard who was
watching. shot him dcad.‘z The policy of
the chairman awarded a vote to that murder-
er, but, withheld it from the mother of the
victim. .
It had been proposed that women would
be required to perform military duty. ~ Very
well. During the late war women, north .
and south, had done their tull‘ share. Per-
haps they did not exert force in the field of
battle, but they aided that force just as effi-
ciently. AtBalakluvn, what man did more
for British arms than Florence Nightingale?
The work done ill our war by women would
have required mm to do it, but for those we-
men that served in the hospitals and else-
where.
