FAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.

VVESTPORT.—The storm of rain which
passed over Westport last Thursday after-
noon was accompanied by a small tornado,
which broke down and uprooted a few trees
at Saugatuck as well as several trees on Mr.
Cutting’s farm at Corupo, and after giving
Mr. J. B. Fish a friendly brush at Cedar
Point, it passed out to sea.

Mr. D. A. Salmon fractured his leg last
Friday morning while stepping hastily from
his carriage at the depot, to take the 8 o'clock
train for New York.

H. E. Dykeman, M. D., has commenced
the practice of Medicine in Westport,

Frederick Beers, about 60 years of age,
died suddenly on Monday morning. of last
week.

The ladies of the Saugatuck Congregation-
il Church, Westport, Rev. A. J. Hetriek,
Pastor, announce a fancy Fair, at Betts's
Hall, on the afternoons and evenings of
Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 14th and
l5lh, for the purpose of raising'lunds for the
‘el‘urnishiug of the Church.

Hugh 0. Shankand, who was reported by
is on the 16th as having been arrested and
ried for disorderly conduct while drunk,
:laims that we did him injustice. He was
irrested for assault only. We are glad to
:now that it was’nt Sliankand but John
larlycorn that was to blame for the muss.

Eas'rON.—Franklin Sherwood, a young
nan about 18 years of age, was accidentally
hrown from a mowing machine last Thurs-
lay and falling upon the cutting bar had his
elt hand severed just below the elbow, and
was otherwise injured.

STEPNEY.—DI'. Zalmon Hall, an eminent
rhysician died suddenly last Thursday. He
vas 72 years of age and had been a practicing
ihysiclan in Stepney about forty years.

case, near the steamboat landing. .

The annual examination in the several de-
rartments of the Public School, proved very
atisfactory in its results, evincing as they did
aore thoroughness on the part ‘ol the teach-
rs and a better understanding and more
rromp‘tness on the part of the scholars.

After an absence of two months on a visit
0 the West, Elder W. L. Hayden has resum-
id his labors with the Disciples Church.

Frank Mead lost. a finger workirfg a plan-
ag machine, recently. Times.

-—The Southport yacht squadron now
consists of the Julia, owned by Mr. Nich-
ols of Greenfield Hill, the Mystery, owned
by F. Bulkley. and the Wake, owned by W.
B. Meeker. The two former have just been
refitted and repainted.

 

Burnosrom‘.—On Thursday last, Capt. C.
Nash started in the sloop Was to remove
his family to Northport, L. I. hen about
fifteen miles from Bridgeport the sloop was
struck by lightning, carrying away the mast,
and stunning the lielrnsman. Fortunately
no one was seriously injured. The steam
tug Laver ac, bound lor Bridgeport, came
up and to big advantage of Capt. N's dan-
gerous situation tried to squeeze $100 out of
him for towing him into port, but finally did
it lor $75.

Howard Barnum teller in the Pequonock
National Bank at , ridgeport, has been as.
ccrlarned to be a delauller to the amount of
$12,000, and has disappeared. Young Bar-
num is a nephew of . T. Barnum, and had
been in his position in the Bank for about
four years. He was. until rcccntl , the fore-1
man of Americus Hose Co. No. . and was
very popular in that position. Fast horses
and first women have proved his ruin. May-
or Hawley is president of the bank. The
directors oli‘er a reward of $500 for his arrest.

Since the above wasin type the commis-
sioners report as follows :— '

“The aggregateloss is $48,000. The bank
has a surplus and profit and loss‘ account of
$17,521.04. The bonds oi Wm. H. Barnum
given are $10,000. The capital stock of the
Bank is impaired to the amount of about
325.000, , '

Wednesday afternoon our city was the
scene of a popular demonstration, such as
has not taken place for cars. The occasion
was the return of Mr. lias Howe, Jr., from
Europe, and the Paris Ex ositron, bringing
with him the gold meda awarded by the
commissioners for his inventions. and the
decoration of the Cross of the Legion ol
Honor, presented by Napoleon 111. He
was received by about 150 of his workmen
headed by a band of music; a salute of 18
guns was tired, and a large number oi citi-
zens joined in the welcome home.

The new carpet works for the Crosslcy
Carpet Co.,arc rapidly approaching comple-
tion. Much of the machinery is up, :and
will be in running order soon.

No state in this ’Juion can afford to be
without a good m'riria organization. Its
members need not be three, but it should be
well equipped and discipsned, ready for
service at a moment‘s notice. .In case it be
so, the occasion for using it may never arise.
Without it, civil power is at tines utterly
helpless. Will there never be any more
riots or sudden insurrections, or laircllimis
in this country ? Who can prophesy that
with such certainty? Is- it not well in let
occasionally a law remain upon the statute
book without repeal? Tire chief expelfies
of our National Guard are already incurr d;
the arsenal expenditures will be within r61.-
sonable bounds; we have a most excellent
body of troops. Tire law authorizes sixty
companies, but that would cost too much.
Forty good companies would be quite
enough, but a total abolition of the whole
system would be an act of great folly.

T seems that the cable telegram of June 29th, giv-

in r a list of all the prizes awarded to American
exhib tors, contained several material errors. The
gold mednlawardcd to Wheeler 8; Wilson was for
their Button Hole Machine; not for their Family
Sewing Machine. ~
At the head of Sewing Machines for the family
stands the Florence; taking precedence of all others
of all nations; thus maintaining in the great expo-
sition the rank which it has for years held at home.
It will also he noticed that the veteran inventor
Elias Howe, Jr., receives thg deserved honor ofa
'gold medal, not for his machine, but for his services
to the world as an inventor and designer.

Extract from Letter of July 3d 1801, from the
European Agent of the Florence ‘ewing Machine
Co. to the home ofilce:

MEANS OE THE COMPANY.

Estimating the distance to be built by the Union
Pacific to be 1,565 miles, the United States Govern-
ment issues its Six per cent. Thirty yrnr Bonds to
the Company as the road is finished :it the uvcrrirve
rate offibout $28,250 per mile, amounting to $.11.
Macon.

Tire Company is also permitted to issue its own
First Mortgage Bonds to an equal amount, and at
the same time, which by special Act of Congress
are madea First Mortgage on the entire line, the
bonds of the United States being subordinate to
them.

The Government makes a donation of 12,800 acres
of land to the mile, amounting to 20,032,000 acres,
estimated to be worth $30,000,000, making the total
resources, cxcliisivc of the capital, $118,416,000: but
the full value of the lands cannot. now be realized.

The authorized Capital Stock of the Company is
one hundred million dollars, of which live millions
have already bccu paid in, and of which it is not
supposed that more than twenty-five millions at
most will be required.

Tire cost of the road is estimated by competent cn-
giiiccrs to be about one hundred million dollars,
exclusive of equipment.

PROSPECTS FOR BUSINESS.

The railroad connection between Omahnnud the
East is now complete, and the earnings of the Union
l’hcilic on the sections already finished for the first
two weeks in May were $113,000. These sectional
earnings as the road progresses will much more
than pay the interest on the Company‘s bonds, and
the through business over the only line of railroad
between the Atlantic and Pacific must be immense.

VALUE AND SECURITY OF THE BONDS.
The Company rcspcclfnlly submit, that. the above
statement of facts l'ully demonstrates the security of
their Bonds, and as additional proof they would sug-
gest that. the Bonds now offered are less than ten
million dollars on 517milcs of road, on which over
twenty million dollars have already been expended .
—on 330 miles of this road the cars are now runZ
ning, and the remaining 187 miles are nearly
completed.

At the present rate ofpremium on gold these bonds
pay an annual interest on the present cost of

and it is believed that on the completion of the road
like the Government Bonds, they will go above par.

It is very easy to say of this, or any other Medicine

ways so easy to prove it. It is, however, exceed—
ingly gratifying to the proprietor of this Medi-
cine, that, while he declares to the public that this
is u'rnost wonderful and effective Specific for Hu—
mors, as stated above, be has abundant proof at.
hand to sustain him.

For sixteen years the Ilmron Dooron has been
manufactured and sold, and every year has increased
the valiic ofits reputation, and the amount of its
sales. In New Hampshire, where it wnsorigina—
ted, no remedy for Ilumors is so highly prized. An
eminent physician (now an army surgeon,) when
practicing in N. 11. purchased between fifty and six-
ty gallons of it, during some seven or eight years,
and used it in his practice. He has since then or—
dercdit for the Hospital where he was stationed.
Otlior physicians have purchased it, and have used
it in practice with perfect success. When the prev
prictor lived in New Hampshire, at Goil'stown Cen—
tre, for the space of thirty or forty miles around,
and in Manchester particularly, the Ilumor Doctor
was well known and highly valued for the numer-
ous and woudcrfulcurcs which it. effected. Though
manufactured in large quantities, the supply was
frequently exhausted, and purchasers had to wait
for more to be made. In that region some very se-
vere cases of Erysipelas wcre treated with it, and
they were cured. Erysipclas sores, or Carbunclel
-tliosc ugly- painful ulcers, were entirely removed,

wherever this medicine was faithfully used. So it

was with Scroliiia and Salt Rheum. The Humor
Doctor cured them.

Since the Proprietor‘s removal to Mclrose. Mass.,

his present residence, he has been regularly selling

it to patients who have applied to him in person,

and has been very successful in relieving and curing

them. Onc case or Erysipclas—of air old man '12

years—is worth mentioning in particular. When he

came to the Doctor's ofiicc he could only wear a pair

of old rubber ovcrsboes his feet and ankles Were so

swollen and sore. Wherrlic pulled ofi‘liis socks the

scabs crime with them, and the raw bleeding feet

were frightful to be old. Snillec it to say, that less

than one dozen bo les of the Humor Doctor (and in

a few weeks) healed up those feet and ankles, so

that they were smooth and apparently sound. The

rpan wore boots without inconvenience. Numerous

cases olpimples in theface have been treated with

this medicine, to the entire eradication of them. In

Mclrose alone, there are nrorc than a hundred per-

sons who have used the Humor Doctor, and give it

an excellent name. In all the towns around it is

well known and approved.
