I have asked but asked in vain.
If any sage historian knows
If damage was done and to what extent
To the brave old jumper‘s clothes.
And there are many other things
To which I would call attention,
But time forbids, I merely say
They are too numerous to mention.
Perhaps some future day
A man just out of college,
With the gravity of an ancient owl
And a noddle full of knowledge,—
Will find out all about the dame
And her half told mysterious stories,

The rhymes of all their glories.
But longer than the scholar’s works
Or words of poet sung
