was drawn under and drowned. Oars were
brown to him, and every effort made to

Mr. Charles M. Williams who was report
ed in last week’s Gazette as having been ac-
cidentally shot in New Haven, on the 4th
insL, is convalescent. He was reported in the
Former as‘flfatally injured and not expected
to recover." IVe saw him last Saturday en-
joying a plate of ice cream with some com-
rades, and at the same time reading from the
“Further“ this, to him, very appalling news.
Constable Cable arrested Geo. Blake, on
the 9th instant, for getting drunk, beating
his wife and riotous conduct generally. Ile
escaped tioin the oiliccr while on his way to
trial, but with the assistance‘of Mr. William
Nash was again secured. 110‘! was fined $7
‘ and costs, liy J usticc Finch, and in default of
payment preparations were made to take
him to Bridgeport, but during the night he
again managed to escape, and left town.
Also on the 11th inst a Scotclinian named
Shankland IIugli,a painter, was arrested by
conitable Cable for drunkenness, disoi'der l y
conduct, and damaging the store of Michael
Corincl during his spree. He was also ta-
ken beforc Justice Finch convicted and fined
in the sum of$15.89. He paid up and was
released,—Thc ofliecrs deserve much praise
for their energy in putting down and aiming
this disturbance in the community.
Rev. E. B. IIuntington,ageut for the “Con-
necticut Soldiers’ Orphan Home,” located at
Mansfield in the eastern part of the state,
addressed the. diflercnt. congregations and
Sunday schools of Westport, last Sabbath, in
behalf of his mission.
The net proceeds of the Fair at the Me-
morial church were $900. The receipts were
over $1000. The Fair closed Monday even-
ing 8th inst.
GREnNs Elmira—Rev. Dr. Huntington of
Stamford, presented the cause of soldiers and
others children in our Alnis Houses in Con-
necticut, at the Congregational church on
Sunday. His discourse was exceedingly
impressive and should be delivered from
every pulpit in the State. _
The Farmers have all been “a fraying"
for the past fortnight and now propose to
take in many very heavy loads of Rye.
STAMFORD—A. young man named Gray
has been arrested in Providence, charged
with forging a check on Mr. H. B. Luin, of
Stamford.
Wm. H. Scoficld had a very narrow es-
cape on Tuesday evening, July 9th, from be-
ing struck by lightning. He was employed
in L. H. Scotield 8500’s slaughter-house and
was so stunned that it was some time before
he recovered.
Thos. Fay was brought before 'Justice Das-
kanr on Tuesday last, on a charge of seduc-
tion. The complainant was Kate Wallace,
who on the advice of the Justice consented
to marriage. Thomas was willing to have
the ceremony performed before Mr. Daskam,
but Catherine could n’t see it. She preferred
to go before the priest. To this Thomas
would not consent, and was sent to Bridge-
port. to make up his mind.-——Adeocate.
Some persons while bathiiig Friday alter-
noou at Shippim, discovered the body of a
man in the water, drifted upon the rocks.
It appeared to have been in the water three
,or four days. Theyjudged the age of the
limb to be about thirty-five years. He was
respectahly dressed in a black lroclc coat,
dark irrixed punts, dark vcsl, silk ncck tie,
and call boots. NO one recognized him as
ever having b3en seen thercabouts.

pairs," and the old Stamford, put on the
route in her place.

Estimating the distance to be built by the Union
Pacific to be 1,565 “*8. the United States Govern-
ment issues its Six er cent. Thirtytycar Bonds to
the Company as the road is finished at the average
rate of about $28,250 per mile, amounting to $44,-
208,000.
The Company is also permitted to issue its own
First Mortgage Bonds to an equal amount, and at
the same time, which by special Act of Congress
are made a First Mortgage on the entire line, the
bonds of the United States being subordinate to
them.

PROSPECTS FOR BUSINESS.
The railroad connection between Omaha and the
East is now complete, and the earnings of the Union
Pacific on the sections already finished for the first
two weeks in May were $113,000. These sectional
earnings as the road progresses will much more
than pay the interest on the Company’s bonds. and
the through business over the only line of railroad
between the Atlantic and Pacific must be immense.

eminent physician (now un'army surgeon.) when

dered it for the Hospital where he was stationed.
Other physicians have‘purchased it, and have used
it in practice with perfect success. When the pro-
prietor lived in New Hampshire, at Gofi'stown Cen-
tre, for the space of thirty or forty miles around,
and in Manchester particularly; the Humor Doctor
was well known and highly valued for the numer—
ons and wonderful cures which it effected. Though
manufactured in large quantities, the supply was
frequently cxhausterl.aiirl purchasers had to wait
for more to be made. In that region some very se-
vere cases of Eryxipclas were treated with it, and
they were cured. Erysipelds sores, or Curbunclu
those ugly painful ulcers, were entirely removed,
wherever this medicine was faithfully used. So it
was with Scrofhla and Salt Rheum. The Humor
Doctor cured them.
Since the Proprietor‘s removal to Mclrole. 11895.,
his present residence. he has been regularly selling
it to patients who have applied to him in person,
and has been very successful in relieving and curing
them. One case ol Erysipelas—of an old man 72
years—is worth nlf‘l’lIIlllllllL’ in particular. When he
came to the Doctor‘s ot‘rlre he could only wear a pair
of old rubber overshnes his feet and ankles were so
swollen and sore. When he pulled offhis socks the
scabs came with them. and the raw bleeding feet

that they were smnnth and apparently sound. The
