THE NATIONAL DEBT—ll is learned from
the proper official source tlrat the public debt
Was decreased during the month of May
nearly-five millions of dollars. The receipts
from miscellaneous sources far exceed the
expectations of Secretary McCulloch. The
unexpected increase occurred in the latter
part of the month. The receipts from Inter-
nal Revenue, also, during the latter part of
the month, Were . unexpectedly heavy,
amounting to two and a half millions of
dollars more than Commissioner Railings
had estimated some two weeks ago. The
requisitions from the Departments, and espe-
cinll y from the War Department, were much
less titan the Secretary of the Treasury had
reason to expect, from indications about a.
mnnth ago. These unexpected results have
ietta heavy currency balance, and caused
also a dimunition of the public debt, as be-
