ier from Russellville, Ky., says Hon. Elisha
Hise, who was just elected to Congress from
the' Third district, by almost 'a unanimous
vote over his Radical oppoueii!s, committed
suicide May 8th, by blowing out. his brains
with apistol. He left a note saying in the
preSent condition of the country, his advan-
ced age preclued his doing the country any
good, and he sought relief in death.

makes a point which we indorse :——What on
earth are dogs kept for? The commissioner
of agriculture states that five hundred thou-
sand sheep valued at two million dollars
were killed in the United States last year. It
is estimated that the expenses of keeping
these dogs is fifty millions of dollars a year ;
and often they are owned by poor persons
whose children need the bread that these
useless curs consume. We can see no use
for these brutes. but for giving the people
the terrible disease known as liydrophobia.
It is not impossible that occasionally one of
them may be useful to watch burglars, but
we think they are seldom of any benefit in
tlYis respect. At any rate they are a very
expensive nuisance.

Salt Lake City.
It forms the sole Western link of the only route to
the Pacific which is adopted by Congres arm aided
by the issue of United Slates Iggnds.
Their road is already completed. equipped and
runningr torili miles from Sacramento to within 12
miles of the summit of the Sierras, and a large
amount of Grading, Tunneling, ‘&c., beyond that
point has been accomplished.
The First Mot-[gage Bonds of this Company af-
ford unusual inducements of Safety and Profit to In.
vestors, for the following among other reasons, Viz:
First. The rate of interest is Simper cent. in. qold,
payable semi-annually in the City ofNew. York.
Second. The Principal is payable in. Gold at mr-
turity.
Third. The cost of the Bonds, Ninety/Jive per cent-
aud accrued interest, is Ten per cent. less than
that of the cheapest Six per cent, Gold Bearing
Bonds of the Government.
Fourth. The United Slates Government. provides
nearly half the amount necessary to buzld the en.-

Fifth. Owing to this liberal provision,accompani_ed
with Extensive Grants of Public Lander winch

enterprises.
Sixth. The Security of its First Marlgage Bonds.
is therefore ample, and their character for safety
and reliability is equalled only by that of the ob
ligations of the Government itself.
Seventh. The net earnings of the completed por
tion are already largely in excess of life inleresl
obligations which the Company will incur; an
twice the distance, and are steadily increasing,
rendering the uninterrupted payuicutof the Inter-
est absolutely certain. .
Eighth. At the present rate of Gold they pay nearly
3 1-2 per cent. per annum, on the gmoant invested.
The Bonds are issued in denominations of $1,000
with semi—annual Gold Coupons attached, payable
in New York, and are offered for the present at 95
pct cent. and accrued interest: (in currency) from
January 1st.
