Chandler, and that class, reckless In his bou—

His firmness amounts at limes to obsti-tiicy,
and he is in danger of losing great meatmres
because they do not exactly meet his Views.
A practical legislator must compromise if he
is ever to make any progress, at least upon
non-essentials. My own opinion is that Con-
necticut will soon be proud of its new Senn-
tor, and that he will call to his supporta
host of young men in that state, who .Wlll
soon revolutionize it With their enthusiasm
and energy. If something of this kind is
not done, there is no hope for it.

Globe's report of the speech :

President before that has attempted to play
this role, and that was Jullfl Tyler; and he
played himselfso dead that the bubbles have
never risen «over the place where he sank.
[Laughton] He undertOnk to Tylerize the
nation, and here sat a W big Senate. A
Whig Senate rejected Tyler’s nominations,
and the Whig party from one end of the
country to the other cried “glory” to the
Whig Senate for rejecting his nominations.
“Look to the Senate I” was the by-word.
Sir, if the President of the United States
reads the visible, tangible, striking letters
along the pathway he is going, he would
read the doom of every one who attempted
to follow in the wake of Tyler. So much
did the people abhor the course pursued by
him that when his final hour came it receiv-
ed the passing notice of the newspapers as
though he never held the high position that
he did. Now, sir, the remedy for this is right
here: if I stood in the relation to the Presi-
dent that the honorable Senator front Wis-
consin does, and ‘that my honorable friend
fronl Connecticut does, I should go to him
and say, “Mr. President, the voice of the
people everywhere, except in Connecticut”

fore, fal into this column that is marching

better for him an his history, and for them
and their history, that they should do that
than to hold up Connecticut as an example
that the world is changing. Eight little
counties out of this mighty government have
spoken. About half their number have
been against ' the President, and about half
in his favor—done by his paltry course——done
by his nefarious example of rewarding trait—
ors to their party, and making traitors of
those who hold their offices, and‘the Senator
from Connecticut knows it. All the glory
that you can gather from that victory I hope
you will treasure up ; but if I had a word of
advice to give you, I would say, rejoice in
the day of your youth, for the day is not far
distant' when 'a mightier than Connecticut
. will call you to judgment. '

Asnns FOR POTATOES..—Ruflls Brown, of
Chelsea, Orange 00., Vt. says that in an ex-
periment tried by him, the gain in the crop
of potatoes by the use of ashes at the rate of
a teacupiull to the bill, was about a bushel
and a half of potatoes for each bushel of ashes
used. The kind of potatoes was the “Eng-
lish pink-eye,” and the yield 200 bushels per
acre. The ground was planted May 7, with
the ashes in holes, and a little over them. It
was plowed and lined J unc 18, the rows be-
ing four feet apart and the hills three feet.
The ashes cost 12 1—2 cents a bushel, aild
potatoes sold at 35 cents, returning full 50
cents a b label for the ashes employed.

miles of the summit of the Sierras, and a large
amount of Grading, Tunneling, &c., beyond that
point has been accomplished. .
The First Mortgage Bonds of this Company af-
ford unusual inducements of Safety andProfit to In-
vestors, for the following among other reasons, viz :
First. The rate of interest is Sixper cent. in cold,
payable semi-annually in the City of New Yor .
Second. Thc Principal is payable in Gold at mr-
