FAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.
TRUIIBULL.—We understand that a new
military Company has been formed and ac-
cepted for the Conn._National Guard. It
already numbers 55 members, but has not
yet been attached to any Regiment; it will
probably be assigned to the 8th, Col. Oran.
flird, and take the place of the Danbury Com-
pany, which is expected to be soon disband-
ed, it not being or like to be efficiently 0r-
ganized as a Military Company.
WESTPORT.—The Congregational Sunday
Schoolchildren announce a New Years
Festival for Wednesday evening, Jan. 3d;
proceeds for erection of a new Sunday
School Room. ,
DANBURY.—-Ai the YoungFolks Club,lasr
Friday night, the question “Ought Jefl Da-
vis to be hung” was discussed and decided
in the negative. '
The great light seen Sunday night, in the
direction of Bethel,proved to be a swamp On
fire near that place. We did not learn how
it originated. , ~
Messrs. Tweedy & Darin, have opened a
branch store at New Orleans for the sale of
fur hats.
On Monday afternoon while Mr. Edward
Kellogg was engaged in uncoupling cars, at
Ridgefield station, he fell or was wrenched
off the ear, which passed-over him, bruising
him badly. He is now lying in a danger-
ous condition.
Mr. Beatty came near meeting with an ac-
cident Wednesday forcnoon. He was at
Depot with his team, and when the cars ap-
proached the horses became frightened and
backed on to the track in front Of the Engine
Mr. B. had barely time to jump out when
the Engine struck the carriage smashing it
considerably.
The Connecticut and Nevada Mining
Company, of which Lieut.-Gov. Roger Aver-
ill, of Danbury, is President, recently had a
remarkable streak of good luck. Their man
ager while running a tunnel to the main
ledge, struck what is supposed 'to be one of
the-leaders, and took from it two tons of ore
that averaged $1,000 per ton ; and while
running a tunnel for water struck a blind
ledge, eight feet Wide, of very superior silver
bearing quartz—Jefersom'an.
—On last Monday portions of a man’s clo-
thing were found on the bank of Sturdevants
Pond, and were recognized as belonging to a
laborer, who came into Danbury the Satur-
day before, and has not since been heard
from. At the time of discovery the pond
was frozen over, thus preventing a search
for the body. We understand the water is
to be drawn ofi‘ to-day, Thursday.
An employee in Crofuts factory while pas‘
sing that building late on Sunday night, dis-
covered a man therein, and believing him to
be there for no good purpose pitched into
him dragged him out doors, and gave him
a severe pounding. A few moments later
this active detective saw the same man or
some one else, mounted on a box and en-
deavoring to move through the window.
The wretch became frightened on being seen
and fled.
On Friday evening an unknown man de-
liberately entered the boarding house of Mr.
Nathaniel Lewis, on main street, and enter-
ing the room of one of the boarders, abstract-
ed therefrom, the coat, pants and vest of. the
occupant and made off unharmed. The
suit is valued at $50 and is quite a loss to
the owneré—Tz‘mes. .
STAMFORD—The Soldier's Widows in
Stamford were each supplied with a Turkey
for Thanksgiving. A number were also sent
to Fitch’s Home for the soldiers’ orphans.
-——Mr. Wm. Pond and wife, who werelout
spending the evening, last Monday, were
suddenly summoned home where they found
on their arrival much to theirsurprise, the
house filled with guests, and a table bounti-
fully filled With creature comforts. After
Mr. Pond had somewhat recovered from his
first surprise, he had another. A gentleman
drew from the place where they had been
concaaled a handsome silver pitcher and sal-
ver, and presented them as a testimonial of
regard from numerous friends—Two

name,) have been making extra nice horse-
shoes which they have hung up in the Post.

RASCALITY.—-Tlle adjoining towns in the
state oi New York, are at the present time
infested with a precious set of rascals, wno
rob and plunder all who come in their way
a‘ld they have as yet escaped detection. Since
the assault on Mr. Penny, at Towner’s Sta-
tion, a few weeks since, there have been two
or three highway robberies ahd also several
houses broken into in that vicinity. Last
Friday evening as a gentleman of South East
was returning from market he over-took a
man who asked him to let him ride, and af-
ter taking him into his wagon he soon over-
took another stranger who also naked him
for a ride. In passing a lonely place the rag-
cals bound him, and took his pocket book,
containing notes and other papers, and $190
in money. and made their escape. Not far
from the same place, a boy was stopped by
two men in soldier’s clothes. who took from
him twenty-two cents, all the money he had
The inhabitants of that neighborhood are
arming themselves, and it would be well for
our people to keep a sharp look out, for the
scoundrels may takea notion to pay us a

examine into the numerous disasters and
wrecks which have latuly occured on the Jer-
sey Coast," has no reference whatever to the
stranding of the old locofoco hulk on the 7th
of November last. The wreck of the demo
cratic party was not the fault of Barnegal,
but from the fact of the concern being too
heavily coppcred, and from over weight of
the met-ll, it sank. It wasa total loss ofcar-
go and crew, without insurance. The com-
munity at large suffered nothing by tli
ovent.»
