ments that have been used avainst Mr. Ferry
in .thclate canvass. As the _ lines truly says
Mr. Ferry was undoubtedly :‘the ablest of the
late Republican delegation.’ His course In
the. lastCongress, when revieWed by thetruc
loverOf [the “Consitutition and the Union,”
will stand out on the page ‘of history in the
same light as the Proclamationof Andrew
JackSOn to the nullifiers of South Carolina.
Mr. Ferry is in no sense of the word a “big-
oted fanatic”—,and no persons know this bet-
ter titan those who make the charge. But
he has been defeated, and it has been done
by the circulation of j ust such slanders as we
have quoted 'from the Times (1 Farmer.—
These papers go in Openly or, a “RECON-
STRUCTION on Tim UNION!” In this work
they saw an opponent in Mr. Ferry. He has
from his youth looked upon the work of our
fathers in establishing the Union, as too
sacred to be “RECONSTRUC’I‘ED” by a party
w 10_ openly declared that the withdrawal of
S ates from the Union was “NOT unannou-
.I13LE."' Had this issues—the “reconstruction
of the Union”—'-bceu fairly brought before the
voters of the 4th District, Mr. Ferry would
have been trininpliantly elected. But the
lying slaifdcrs of the “Old Farmer Tract
House” have been heeded. Some of Mr.
Ferry’s political friends have been misled:—
“Abolitionism i” has been rung In their ears,
until they fear that he was really an “abolir
tionist.” '
Gentlemen “Secessionists” and “Recon-
structionists”-—-make the most of your short
lived triumph. We believe thnt reason wrll
soon assert its sway over the minds of those
who have. listened to your infamous slander-S
Mr. Ferry although defeated . occupies a
proudcr position to-day, than his successful
caluinniators. He has pursued an honorable
