the reports of the New York and Hing-
ham murders, no One can fail of being im-
pressed with the positivencss and perfec-
tion of the chemical testimony. In the
New xork case all the blood found in dif—
ferent parts of the house has been dispos-
ed of. The marks upon the dagger were
of iron rust. Certain stains of blood
found in the garret, and upon certain ar-
ticles of apparel Were menstrual. Stains
found upon a newspaper in Eckel’s secre-
tary, and on the butcher knife from Stan-
ton street, were from blood, but not Dr.
B-unlell’s blood. Thus the marks of Dr.
Burdell’s blood Were narrowed down to
toe stains on the door of his room, the
walls leading down stairs, the front doors,
the oil-cloth 87.0 These were the only
blood marks of the murder, and all cou-
jectures arising from the other marks is
shut off. The microscope was hardly
less useful in this examination than the
laboratory. In f t it was an essential
auxiliary.
There is probably apOpnlar curiosi-
ty to know how these things are determ-
ined. It is by the character of the blood
globules, as exhibited under a microscope.
The true blood globule possesses a shape
and peculiarities of color and constitution.
Thus, by comparing the true globulc with
that which has been changed by one of
the processes of nature, a marked differ-
ence is seen. Thus, comparing one man’s
blood with that of another, a difference
of size and characteristics is discernible.
Chemistry determines whether a substance
be blood or not. The microscope tells
what kind of blood it is.
In the Hingham case, Dr. Jackson
took the fecal matter found in the murd-
ered man’s intestines and got from it 10
7-10 grains of arsenic. From this he got
6 97-100 grains white arsenic, arscnious
acid. Portions of this were reduced to
metallic arsenic, and made to form what
is called the arsenicul mirror, and then
an experiment was made proving that it
was metallic arsenic and not antimony.—
This is the whole story, and it is as rigid-
ly exact in all its details as the demons
tration of a mathematical problem. If
we could analyze a human mind in this
way, and determine on the guilt-marks it
would save a good deal of trouble.

DEFIANCE To THE Baptisms—The
beauty of the Palace of Westminster is
ensured against untimely decay by two
discoveries of a Polish gentleman, M.
Szerelmcy, now in process of application
to the building with the most satisfacto-
ry results. One renders stone unabsorb-
ent of moisture—the principal cause of
decomposition from atmospheric action-—
It fills the interstices of the stone to
which is applied with a flinty substance,
, resists the action of the strongest acids,
is unaffected by extremes of temperature,
does not alter the granulated appearance
of the stone, prevents decay and discoler-
ation, is applied by a brush as easily and
rapidly as any other paint and costs only
one shilling per square yard. Some part
of the Palace has been coated with it for
upwards of two years, yet it is as clean
and flinty as on the first day. Long con-
tinued scrubbing with wire brushes and
water makes no impression upon it. The
roofs of the clock and Victoria Towers,
to which it has been applied are bright
_ and clean as when emerging from the
foundry. It adheres to metal surface so
tenaciously, that in attempting to remove
it the chisel scrapes off the iron with it.
It appears indestructible by the elements
and is uninjured by long immersion in
, sulphuric acid—Cassel’s Paper.

comes dry to render it soluble.

Past Presses in this Country and in
Europe.
I learn from the Messrs. Hoe, that the
six-cylinder press shipped by them to Eu:
rope by the Ericsson, was for Lloyd’s
Weekly Newspaper, London, and not, r
the Times as has been stated. The 0' y
mammoth cylinder press in Europe ex-
cept the one above, is a four-cylinder
used by La. patrie a Paris newspaper,and
has been run by them with great accept-
ance for several years.
The three largest presses in the count-
ry are owned by the Philadelphia Ledger
and New York Sun. They are eight
cylinder—the only ones of‘hc kind ever
constructed, and will throw off, combined
sixty-thousand sheets an hour. The im-
mense circulation of the Ledger, the lar-
gest of any in the world, would admit of
nothing but the fastest presses that could
be built, and hence no order was given to
the indefatigable Brethers Hoe, who
soon exhibited to astonished neWSpapcr-
dom their beautiful and unmatched eight
cylinder, or their “ last fast press.”
The number of six-cylinder presses in
the Unised States is four ; one of these
is used by the New York Herald, Ttib-
une and Times, and the fourth by the
Boston Journal. The Herald has also
in use two four~cylinders and the Times
and Tribune each one. ,
There are likewise eleven other four-
cylindcr presses in this country, which
are owued as follows : New York Com-
mercial Advertiser, Evening Post, Sun-
day Dispatch, Stunts Zeitung ; Boston
Transcript, Times and Traveller ; Phila-
delphia Bulletin and Cincinnati Commer-
cial each one and the Baltimore Sun
two.
The Messrs. Hoe are also now engag-
ed in building two other four-cylinders—
one for the Boston Herald and the oth-
er for the Philadelphia. Sunday Dis-
patch.
The price of a four-cylinder is $12,500,
a six-cylinder $18,000 and an eight-cylin-
der $20,000. The former is capable of
printing ten thousand impressions an hour
the six-cylinder fifteen thousand and the
eight-cylinder twénty thousand. It
must be a source of great gratification to
the Messrs. Hoe, that from each of the
journals which they have furnished with
their fast presses they have received the
welcome assurance that their unwearied
labors have been crowned with the most
perfect success, and that the presses fur-
nished have, in every instance, given the
most unbounded satisfaction.
