The Dancing Hats.
3 The N. Y. Evening Post gives an ac-
. count of a curious feat-of necrbmaucy, by
. which hats have been made-to dance up-
on the 'floor in a drinking'lsdloon in that
city. Almost every onezwho ‘ has gone
the rounds _of the metropolissduring the
past few months, has‘visited - the oyster
saloon of Mr. Dexter, in Bleecker street,
for the purpose of seeing the dancing huts.
One hat or any number of bars may be
. placed upon the counter or upon the

the curious.
Manypi'omineut spiritualists visited the
place, examined" Mr. Dexter, the room,-
the floor, the. hats, the violins, the adjoin-

the phenomena were produced by spirits.
One of these believer-says Hallock,pub-
- - lisheda letter. on the subject, inwhich he
iiidwlares his conviction that the whole
‘was “.3 genuine spiritual manifestation.”

I would not associate with the man or
boy that would wantonly kill the birds
that cheerfully sing around our dwellings
and our farms; he is fitted for treason
and murder. Who does not, with the
- freshness of early morning, call up the
memory of the garden of his infancy in
childhood l—the robin’s nest in the old
cherry tree, and the nest of youngchirp-
ing birds in the current bushes the flow-
ersplauted by his mother and nurtured
by his sister l” .

“says that very few of the sudden deaths
which are said‘to arise from disease of the
" heart do really arise from that cause-—
i? To ascertain the real. origin of sudden
deaths, the Doctor says the experiment
has been tried in Europe and reported to
"a scientific congress held at Strusburgh.
Sixty-six cases of sudden death were made
. the subjectsof a thorough postmortem ex-
amination. In these cases, only two
‘ 'ware'found who died from disease of the
heart. 'Nine out of the sixty-six died
from Apoplexy, while there were forty-
:six‘ cases of congestion of the lungs—that
is the lungs were so full of blood they
. oeuld not work, there not being room
;enough for asuliicient quantity of air to
enter to support life. - -
' The Doctor goes on to enumerate the
' causes-that may produce congestion of
the lungs. They are cold feet, tight
‘ " shoes, tight clothing, costive bowels, sit-
ting still until chilled through after being
warmed by labor or a rapid walk, going
too suddenly from a close, heated room
into the cold, air, especially after speaking
and ‘suddeu depressing news operating on
-- the blood. These causes of sudden death
* being known, an avoidance of them may
serve to lengthen out valuable lives which
would otherwise be lost under the verdict
of a heart complaint. That disease is
”supposed to he inevitable and incurable,
home men may not take the pains they
‘ would to avoid sudden death, if they
knew, it lay in their power.

THE SIN or DANCING—The Rev. James
I}. ”Corning, the Presbyterian minister of
Buffalo, whose lectures on “ The Chris-
tihn Law of Amusement” have occasion-
ed some comments, is in favor of dancing,-
at least as it is practiced " on the High-
lands of Scotland and the green swords
of Switzerland, and in the rural districts
of Germany.” He objects strongly to
fashionable suppers and parties, and
[would seem to speak in the following pas.
sage, not without personal observation:-
€‘ Why, I have sat beside a professing
,Christian woman lease of the beautiful
parlors of a fashionable metropolitan av-
enue, whose jeweled neck, and cars and
lingers, and dazzling brocades as much
as said to the assembled guests, ‘ none of
your dresses cost us much as mine} and
- then I have seen her go into the supper
' room and out enough to makeia swine
have gripes of conscience, and then come
out, obese, and panting for breath, made
mal'vcllously religious by sandwiches and
champaigu, and wind up the force with a

of Para Sarsaparilla, so combined with other
