riority of our mothers and grandmothers

day; It would be interesting to. know
how much of this is due to the kind of
rooms they stay iii—they can not be said
'to live in such liabitations. It cannot be
denied, that many, farm houses, as now
constructed, are unfavorable to l1ealth.——‘
They are more comfortable than those of
our fathers, and have many more conven-
iences and elegancics, but in one particu-
lar at least, they are less conducive to the
preServation of health. The old-fashioned
' farm-houses had low ceilings it is truc,but-
then it had large rooms, especially the
kitchen, and it had a broad, open fire-
dant ventilation. The
doors and windows too were not so scru-
pulously light at the joints, as though
the external air were poisonous and must
be shut out. The modems walled up
our fire-places, listed every crack, and
then put into them lingo air—tight stoves.
Then We have set down in our “ comfort-
able” rooms expecting to enjoy good
’health l
It is no wonder that farmers’ families
everywhere are becoming less robust eve-
ry year. The men who are out doors
‘the time, suffer comparatively lit-
most of
tle injury ; but the females, confined as
“they are day and night, to these close
apartments, are growing pale, sallow and
are breaking down prematurely.
Every one should look at this matter
and if possible apply a remedy. A par-
tial one, at leasliis easily obtained. Make
an opening in your fire-place, as large as
a stove-pipe and another in the chimney-
breast, near the ceiling, for the escape of
foul and over-heated air. Then. to sup-
ply the room with fresh air, and to pro-
mote a good circulation, attach springs
or pulleys to the upper sashes of your
windows, so that they can be dropped a

a short time since, we would call attention
to the following letter written to the Editors
of the New York Courier and Enquirer :
Mn.Eoiron :~In the fire at No. 39 Warren
street. on the morning of the 9th inst,0ur
most valuable books and papers were exposed
for 36 hours in one of Stearns & Marvin’s
Fire Proof Safes. .,
We say fire proof, not because they are so
labelled. but because we have so proved
them. Our books and papers came out 11n-
injured, savc the binding of the books, occa-
sioned by steam.
Our store was five stories above ground,
and two stories below, occupied from cellar
to garret. The intensity of the boat can be
attested to by any fireman who witnessed it.
No furnace can be contrived by the inge-
nuity of man to create a more intense heat.

of Para Sarsapnrilla, so combined with other
substances of still greater alterative power as
