lig 8: Will, of this place, I have made an analitieal ex .
evaluation of U. Wolfe's Aromatic Schiedam Schnapps,
with the object of ascertaining if it contained any sub-
itsnco noxwus to health, and to inform them as to its
grue composition and relative quality with the other

ill that are offered in the market, and the results of
1y observations are as follows :—

Udolpho Wolfe’s aromatic Schldsiri schnapps is a

plri'tuous liquid, of a very agreeable: aromatic odor,
implotely transparent and almost colorless, having

Ily a very slight tint of yellowish gray ; its flavor

strong and very agreeable to the palate. It marks

Idegrees in Catlor's alcohol weigher or 52 degrees 5

androdth in Gay Lussac’s alcohometrs. By the dis-

] glass ”loft and a recipient surrounded with ice, I

we collected in this recipient an alcoholic liquid with

very agreeable hroma completely cairn-less and trans-
gent, which marked 90 degrees in Cartier’s alcoholic
veiglior, or 70 degrees 5 hundredth. on Gay Lussac’s al-

‘ometre ; and which representad as a whole 57 per
sent. of aromatic Schieilnm schnpps subject to distilla-
tion in the retort This liquid did not soil the trans
parcncy of the distilled water in mixing it with the same
and its agreeable aroma is doubtless due to a. very tri-
fling amount of an essentiail oil inseparable from al-
oohol.

From the remainder of the distillation which was left
in the retort I have obtained, through evaporatiun in a

vapor bath, a. substance ofa yellowish brown color,
clear, and having a bitter fists which is not disagrees.

. 'Jile, and which afterwards becomes aromatic and loaves

this gin are due. I have not found in Udolplio Wolfe’s

étmromatic Schiedsm schnapps any mineral or organic

submnce other than the extractive one already named
and the aromatic one obtained by distillation. Finally,
Uaolplio Wolfe’s aromatic Schiedam schnapps consists
simply of an aromatic alcohol of 20 degrees of gradua-
tion in Cartier’s alcoholic weigher, and of an extractive
bitter aromatic substance, which perhaps, is medicinal;
and on account of its not containing any matter inj uri-
ius to the health, as well as for its odor and good flavor
-3 {act which no doubt arises from the choice sub-
tances employed in its manufacture, and from the pe.
aliar manner of its distillation, it should in myopinion
3 preferred to all the Holland, Belgic and German gins
hich are found in this Island which it has been my
tainess to examine. These gins as I have often pro-
d, it exhale u disagreeable 01101, and have a more’ or
:11 disagreeable flavor, some of them havingleft as was
.11 case with the superior gin from the distillery of Mr.
:nry Dectjen (of Bremen), as residum after evapora-
