Shoeing Horses.
The following are the regulations 03
the British army upon this subject.—
Thcy were prepared by a mixed commis-
sion of officers and eminent experienced
professional men, and have recently been
issued :—
1. the shoe is to be beveled off so as
to leave a space and prevent pressure to
the sole. ~
2. It is not to be grovcd or fettered.
but simply punched, and the nails count-
ersunk.
3. Calking is to be applied to the hind
shoe only, and is to be confined to the
outside heel. The inside heel is to be
thickened in proportion.
4. The weight of' the shoe is to be
from twelve to fifteen ounces, according

Land Skinners.
This term applies to a class of men
farmers—shall we say l—who want to
get the increase of land without making
any compensation for its use.
They may be found in almost every
section of the country. If they crop their
land, the product is all sold and carried
off the farm. Not the grain simply which
they raise, but the straw, if the crop be
barley, wheat or cats and the stalks, if it
be corn. Only cattle sufficient to meet
the necessities of the family, are kept on
the farm. These consist of two or three
half fed cows, as many lean pigs, a span
or two of horses, or in their stead the
frames of one or more yoke of oxen.—
What manure they make is all required
for the garden, or for one or two acres of
corn ground.
With this management, the land very
soon fails to yield its increase of grain,
and then grass is tried. For a year or
two a tolerable crop is produced ; but
this, too, is sold and carried off the farm,
and, as might be expected very soon the
hay crop is too inconsiderable to meet
the expenses of the farmer’s family, and
grain growing is once more tried, but
with no better success than formerly.—
Under such management, it is no wou-
der that his land is too poor to pay for
cultivation, so he sells at a sacrifice, and
V“ moves out West.”
Such a man is a “land skinner” and

ten felt it to be our duty to warn the peo-
ple against the careless use of fire-arms.
So many serious ascidents occur from a
failure in hearing or listening to this can-
tion, humanity seems to require that eve-
ry mishap of this kind should be used in
pointing a moral, and inspiring some idea
of self-preservation in the careless.—
case in point we leave our readers to de-
cidc. The other day, an Irishman in the
employ .of Peter Rowan, Esq., of this
town, took it into his head to shoot a cat.
For this purpose he procured an old-fash-
ioned gun belong to his employer, and
“loaded” it. First, he put in a charge
of shot, which he covered by ramming
home a wad. Next, a charge of powder.
To make sure of his victim, he wound up
the loading with a small handful of corn
in the kernel. Thus preparedflie brought
the instrument of death to bear upon the
cat, and snapped; To his great chargin
the-gun was not discharged. He snapp-
ed, aud snapped, and snapped again ; but
it was no use, the gun would not go. Ir-
ritated beyond measure at his failure, heI
drew the iron ramrod from the gun placed
the point in a fire until it reached a red
heat, inserted it at the muzzle, and then,
wormed it down through the corn until it
reached the powder, when whang ! went
the charge down the shot, the i'amrod
through his hand between the thumb and
fore-finger, burying the corn in various
parts of his hand and badly singing his
face with the powder l The cat sur-
vived l and the Irishman after having the
corn “ heed out” by Dr. Hendrick, is do-
ing as Well as could be expected, under
the circumstances. He is fully satisfied

tivation of the grape in California bids
fair, in the short space of twenty years,
to transcend in importance the working
of gold mines. The State. Register for
1859 informs us that the increase of vines
from 1856 to 1857 was fifty per cent.,
.1858, and about fifty per cent. since then
on the whole stock, being, a greater
increase than compound interest would
yield. It is estimated that the present
stocks of vines when matured, exclusive
of the proceeds derived from the sale of
the grape and the manufacture of brandy
will reach ten millions of dollars. In
twenty years, at the rate of progress
above indicated, the wine product of Cal-
ifornia will be worth fifty millions of dol
lars. »

a short time since, we would call attention
to the following letter written to the Editors
of the New York Courier and Enquirer :
MR.EDI'I‘0R :-In the fire at No. 39 Warren
street. on the morning of the 9th inst , our
most valuable books and papers were exposed
for 36 hours in one of Stearns d: Marvin’s
Fire Proof Safes.
We say fire proof, not because they are so
labelled, but because we have so proved
them. Our books and papers came out no-
injured, save the binding of the books, occa-
sione by steam. .
Our store was five stories above ground,
and two stories below, occupied from cellar
to garnet. The intensity of the heat can be
attested to by any fireman who witnessed it.
No furnace can be contrived by the inge-
nuity of man to create a more intense heat.
We voluntarily give this tribute to the value
