and somewhat worn out field near" my
farm. I had supposed, and the theory
was generally believed in the ueighbor~

ing. In accordancewith this view I snf—
fered not a hoof to touch the soil. The
result was I » was sadly mistaken. On
entering the field the next hay season,

still visible, with the spires. of grass hard-
ly near, enough, to be called neighbors,
which 're’ndei'ed‘ it nearly impossible to
mow what grass there was. .Still I was
not satisfied, but held on .to my opinion
another. year, and still another, with yet
more unprofitable results. I then thought
it time to adopt seme other method, and
my subsequent experience goes to prove,
to my satisfaction, that feeding, to a cer-
tain extent, 'even‘to short feeding when
the ground is in a proper state, that is,
when netted-soft,» is notburtfub but real-
ly beneficial? This will hold good in re-
gard :r’t‘o- ,close' moWing; Some people
think that'close mowing is detrimental to
the field. ,My experience teaches the
contrary, viz :, that high mowing is detri-
mental. My argument will also hold
good in respect to felling forest trees.—
Trees _ cut frbm" four to six feet of the
ground seldom sprout, while those that
are out only a few inches from the root,

fi'Mr. Bird, farmer, at Burton, Eng-
land has sustained a heavy loss in a sin-
gular manner. He had a flock of 867
sheep, which were recently “ dipped” in
a chemical'sblution used for destroying
ticks, &c., and then turned out to grass.
It is supposed that this solution was wash-
ed 011' thesheep by a shower of rain and
fell upon the grass, which being eaten by
the sheep, poisoned them. Only twenty-
six out of the flock of 867 remained alive.

as well as in cooking apples, pumpkins,
potatoes for starch, about its burning and.

in the bottom of the kettle under the f ruit.‘
That used for domestic. cooking, should
be whole straw cut at the joints and di-
vested of _husks_. _It'is easily separated
from the fruit'after' it iscooked, and will
save it from all burned taste. It is a

noon" by one of our grocers, who had just
rcceiyed'a fresh lot, that converted ns.~—
He first selected adozen of the large sized
and placed them in one scale and then
put tWenty one-of-thc smaller sized in the'
opposite side to balance them. The cus-,
tomer chose the = dozen, paying the price
that was asked-for the twenty one.

mazoo, Mich, has made a successful ex-
periment upon a new plan of extracting
chinese cane juice, and recommends it to
others, as it saves the cost of a crushing
mill, and enables parties provided with
ordinary. farm implements of make a full
supply of syrup for family use, at a very
little expense._ .The plan is to cut the
canes, in ,a, straw cutting machine, and
then steam them until quite soft, and press
and then proceed with the evaporation
as with maplesap. Boiling the cut canes
Wil answer .where no conveniences for '
steaming exist though steam is preferable.
