such gross feeders as cabbage and corn,
bntgthere are plants very impatient of be-
ing disturbed while wet. . The common
garden snap and running beans are'exam-
. ples ; and if worked while wet even with
dew, the pores of' the leaves seem to be-
come stopped, and the .whole plant is apt
to rust and become. greatly injured.—
Whether the Lima beans and other leg-
umes are as impatientof being hoed in
the dew, I have not ascertained. Experi~
ments should, however, be tried the com-
ing season on hoed crops.

ENGINES WITHOUT BOILnIis.—The de-
velopments of inventive genius have al-
ready become so wonderful, that the ad-
vent of any new triumph, however novel
or extraordinary, scarcely excites crcdu-
lity ,or astonishment ;.and though the an-
nouncement contained in the caption of
this notice may'at first awaken surprise,
yet it implies a_result literally and practi-
cally accomplished in .theapplication of
an element of motive power, by a method
recently ,inventedand. just perfected by
Mr.'Henry M. Paine Of this city. The
importance and ‘value of this discovery
was successfully tested in presence of sev-
eral gentlemen, on Saturday afternoon
last, .a_miniature engine, with a two and
one-fourth inch cylinder, and of beautiful
workmanship, being employed for the pur-.
pose, and with such success, that, within
the, space of one minute, a caloric applica-
tion equivalent to that of'a common lamp '
or candle set the engine in motion and
generated a power .sufficient‘) compete
with, the ordinary strength-of a man, show-
ing a ratio, of power nearly or. quite thir-
ty-two times greater. than that‘genera'ted
by the usual-process, and satisfatorily de-
monstrating the apparent practicability
and economy (the cost being merely n'om-

the generation of steam in small genera-
ttors under high temperatures, or those of
Q'Erlcsson involving mechanism of unwield-

ation generates an expansive force of come
parative high pressure in great volume
under very low. .temperatnre,and by means
of a generator much smaller than used by
Perkins '; while the portions of the engine
manipulating and transmitting the power,
are compact and justlyiproportionate to
the wonk to be accomplished. ‘

regular trips for the season, leaving Norwalk
every Tuesday, and Pike Slip, N. Y., every
Saturday.
The Domestic leaves Norwalk every Satur-

the above vessels will be at the Pike Slip
dock at all times, so that Freighters may ship
their freight at any time, and be sure of hav-
ing it put on board.
