NEW CANAAN,

Lies immediately north of N orwalk,
and sputh of Pound Ridge, in the State
of New York. It has Wilton on the east,
and North Stamford on the west. The
character of the country, as you travel
northward, from the shore is not particu-
laly inviting, and the soil is rather thin
and stony. There is abundant evidence
of the skinning system of farming, stony
pusture.s,,ni_eadows fringed with brush and
swampscovered with maples, alders, and
Smpe vines. The land and the cultiva-
tion, Judging from the appearance grow
poorer as you recede from the shore.

. The Farm of Stephen Hoyt a-ml So’/zs,

in a region so unpromising took us by siir-
prise. There is probably no better illus-
tration of the principles of husbandry ad-
vocated by this journal, to be found.in..the
state. YVe consider it a privilege, to have
had the opportunity to visit a farm, where
so much labor is expended, and where it
is so well rewarded. If we have any de-
sponding cnltivators among us, we advise

rcfrcsli themselves with the lirst principles
of the art. The visit could not fail to be
pleasant, and profitable.

This farm consists of 230 acres, a size
still very common in our state, and none
too large, if it havethe requisite capit-al
and labor, expended upon it to make it
pay. About 35 acrcsof it are improved
as it nursery, the rest is devoted to farm
crops.‘ The "farm is managed by Mr.
Hoyt, ‘and his two sons ; all devoting
themselves personally to the business. One
sou liasthe supervision of the nursery
work, the other of the farm labor. The
stock consists of nine cows, three pairs
of oxen, five horses, three calves, anfi
eleven swine. They employ upon the
farm twelve. hands besides themselves, and
arrange their work, so as to keep them all
busy during the whole year. This feature

faith in the doctrines they preach to oth-

ground is prepared to receive them. One
orcliard near the house has been planted
nine years, and has been kept under con-
stant cultivation. The trees are admira-
bly trimmed from their first year, forming
broad low heads. The bark is smooth
showing good culture, and the use of pot-
ash water. They are examined twice a
year about the collar, for the apple worm.
They are much larger than many apple
trees? of three times their age, and are be-

the orchards are set out upon the double
row system, every other tree to be re-
movcd, as soon as their tops cover all the
ground. They have cultivated between
the young apple trees, nursery trees, root.
crops, and sometimes buckwheat.

profitable part of their improvements.--
They were first led into this operation,
by the loss of a large number of their nur-
sery trees upon a wet piece’ of land.—~
Mostof the farm has a tenacious subsoil,
and a. good deal of it is springy. They
put, a mile of underdrains in the field, and
it cos wrought such an entire change in
the soil, and so efi'ectually guarded against
winter killing, that they are laying them
down all over the farm, where they are
needed, as fast as they get the time and
the capital. They use stone altogether,
which have thus far worked well, though
they have not been down "long enough to
determine whether they are equal to the
tile drain. , '

This improvement is generally carried
on at the same time as the underdraining.
The larger rocks are blasted, and put in-
to heavy stone wall for fencing, making
the fields of large size. The smaller ones,
so many of them as are needed, are used

rable, and would be thought entirely reck-
less husbandry, by a man accustomed to
lay out only ten dollars upon an acre of
soil, to fit for a. crop. lt cost from for-
ty to fifty dollars an acre to do this work,
and it pays much better than the old style
of farming. The surface is made smootli,
so that a team can plow all day without
hitting a. fast stone. The soil is made of
looser and finer texture, so that a team
can plow more in a day and the roots of
plants can do__ their lpillowing with the
- gwatest facility ; there is no impervious
E:ui‘(l pun within six inches of the surface.

which lcomes of draining and snbsoiling,
facilitates the formation of fine fibrous
roots in plants and trees, so that they
grow more rapidly, and sooner reach ma-
turity. The soil is in condition to plant
earlier in spring, and the frosts are kept
ofi’ later in the fall. Through the whole
season it is in much better condition for
vegetation. Of course, if there were no
more manure applied to it, the crops
would be much larger than upon unclean-
ed land. _

But one of the greatest advantages is,
inthe enlarged capacity of the soil to
make a profitable use of large qiiantities
of manure. Manure upon a thin hard
soil is liable to be last by evapora.tiou.—
But you may put on fatty loads to the
acre upon drained and subsoiled land,--
the. last twenty-five loads will pay as good
a profit, as the first iweiity gvc. The
whole texture of thesoil, to the dcptlito

Can there be any better illustration of
utter folly of the sl-zinning system of
farining, and the solid advantage of '
tliorougli iu':pi'oveinciits, and thorough
tillagc. A good deal of capital has
been invested in this fa rm, and in these
improvements, and large sums are every
year paid out for labor. The C:lpli.ul is
well looked after, and it pays an interest
of twelve per cent-., according to the. cal-
culation of the pi'opi'ietors.

We have many more points to notice
before we leave this form, but we wish
our farmiii-__; readers to stick ft pin here,
and take a week for reflection. Many of
tlicii" farms, as now managed, do not by
five, three or two per cent. , They have

paid the taxes on them, for the twenty
years they have owned tlicm. VVhy not
begin to improve’ at least one acts ofland
