There are two kinds of Palpitatiou viz:

heart, or disease of" its niusculair substance,
and functional or nervous palpitiition. For
the former there is no cure ; it is often pallia-
ted, but-nem-r cured. For the latter. although
all treatment has been by some of the highest
author ities discarded because (as they say) so
little. if-any success attend: any 'reniedia_l ef-
-fort that may be made. Yet ‘a well directed
treatment is not only of most signal benefit,
but will cure, providing the grand ('-flllst: of
the functional derniigement be well under-
stood, and a treatment instituted with direct
reference to it. So far from discarding all
treatment it certainly s_hould receive the clo-
sest investigation and scrutiny, and ;every
-possible exertion should be used towards its

Organic, or that incurable (lisease ‘ofthe
musclnr structure of the lieart, is produced, as

the bear? But before answering this question
let us see what are generally the uccoinpany-
iug symptoms. 'l‘he‘pulse generally, are from
90 to 110—tongue clean, read and swollen, ir-
ritation and redness about. the tonsi1s——bowels
generally very irregul-.ir',- headache and flush-
ed f':icc—teuderness at the pit of the stomach
—-acidity and flntu1eiice- sleep unrefi‘e-ahiug
-—depressiou of spirits of hours’ d_ui_-ation——
feet cold—skin highly-sensitive to changes in
the atmosphere, &c., &c., giving the most
positive assurance of in highly congestive oi~_.-
guns. The cause,then, of nervous palpitation
or functional derangement of the heart, has its
origin in disease of the stomach and digestive
organs, the removal of which is of the first im-
portance, for by so doing we cure the function-
al disease, and steer our patient clear of that

for which there is no cure, and but very little
relief from palliatives, And, by the by,I will
here take occasion, to remark. for the benefit
nof sufferers, that as 0. general thing where

removal, physiciéroms are too apt to impute

be relieved by timely application to proper

The true indication of treatment, then,is
the removal of the highly irritated and con-
.gested condition of’ the digestive organs; and
ifvthei-e is any disease requiring the most par-
ticular selection in remedies. this most certain-
ly is one. not only because v-.1‘iuable time may
be lost in the taking of improper remedies,
but the exhibition of remedies not consistent
with the true condition of the stomach, may
increiise still more the ill,-‘ease, and hasten on
