but one gasorireter, capable of holding
4.000 feet. Front this time the intro-
duction of gas into use in London he-
came so general that, in 1824" there

ing 47_ gasoineters, capable of contain-
ing;9I7.940 feet of gas. During this

The.experime'nt thus made Ill London
was soon after followed by many of the
othercities in England and on the Cori-
tinent, as well as by those of the" Uni-
ted States. 'l‘lie use of gas -has now
become so general that few towns of
any coirsiderable size in England and
the United States are without it.
Tlieprocess of making _ coal gas is
simplel Bituminous coal is thrown into
a hot. cylinder of iron, the mouth of
which in closed carefully by an iron door
with the edges cemented by soft clay.-
The vapor arising from the coal is ‘re-
ceived into a tube, by means of which
iris perrniited to escape into a serie's of
vessels, where it is cooled and deposited
much of its impure matter. It is then
passed into another series of vessels
contairiirig quick lime, which robs it of
its snlphurous and other nauseous mix-
tures. From this receiver it flows _pnri—
fied, as we find it in‘ use, into the gas-
ometer," and is from thence distributed,
as ii, may be needed,.t-hrough mains and
service pipes, iirto various parts of the
city- The highly charged bituminous
coals, ‘such as the English Cannel. Coal,
or the Albert. coal of_ Nova Scotia, are
found best-adapted to the purposes of

The '-machinery of different compa-

principle’, as here set forth, is to be
found in all of them. iriid in practice
varies but little. The chief, improve-
ment made‘ wiiliiri a few years consists
in the mode in which pressure is sup-
plied to the gusoirieter, and the conse-
quent regularity with wl.iclr the gas is-
sues from the burners.
