web objections of his opponent one by

By an array of statistics, gathered from

laws of Kansas, and the measures ofthe
administration——he proved the Demo-
cratic party guilty of the most outra-
geous policy, and at war with every
principle of liberty and justice. He
showed, beyeiid all controversy, by an
array of the most startling facts, that
slavery bliglits the soil and curses the
State wherever it goes, and that there-
fore it ought not to go to Kansas, even
saying nothing of the sacred and solemn
compact the South had violated before
it could be introduced. The frauds and
violence of the border gentlemen, as he
ironically called them, were exposed in
a masterly manner, and he answered
the question of his opponent, as to the
authority for calling the Kansas laws
bogus, iii a satisfactory way. '
After Mr. Raymond had finished Mr.
Chase got up to make the closing speech,
but it was evident that. he saw he was
completely annihilated. There was no
spot or place for him to stand upon.
He stammered and faltered and com-
plained of a bad cold. He said it was
evident that Gov. Raymond was among
his friends, but when they got over to
New York, he thought there might be
as many Deniocracts as Fremoiiters He
closed by saying, “Gentlemen, I am
really in too much pain——I am sorry for
my own cause as well as for the Demo-
crats present, that I am compelled to
stop.” -
The Buchanan men were ashamed of
their cause, and many of them were
convinced that their party was a hum-
bug. We heard a prominent Buchanan
man say, after the meeting, “ If that is
Bucliauanisni I am done with it. I am
disgusted. I tell you, gentlemen, I shall
go for Freirior_i_t._”

We see by the “posters” along our streets
that at the Buchanan and Breckenridge dem-
onstration of Thursday evening next, a “por-
tion ofthe Empire Club” is to be present‘ If
this be true, and the following description of
"the “E.‘mpii-cs” from the New York Courier
and Enquirer be correct, we advise our cili-
zens-to fasten their hen-roosts Thursday night

history is written in the license and pro-
fligacy of the political affairs of this city
during the last twelve years. It was
established in 1844, from the very worst
