\Vhy Peter did not prosper.
Peter was a clever man, pleasant, ac-
commodating, and worthy, but he had a
temper like a percussion cap, quick,
fiery,’ and blazing. When he had a spell
on he would swear like a pirate, abuse
‘ his best friends, and act like a hyena,
spitful, infernal, and devilish. Peter’s
wife was a very good sort of a woman,
but I was always sorry for her, no wo-
man who is decent ought to be cursed
with such a husband. His spells were
not anger, they consisted in the concen-
trated essence of ‘madness, blazing, blas-
ting fury, the" sum of all that is execra-
ble, beastly and brutal. When Peter's
power was up, he not only acted like a
fool, but was savage and merciless, sul-
len as a mastilf, raving like a- moon-
struck baboon. He once had friends,
but he drove them off in his phrenzied
spells, with temper and with slang.‘-— ,r

peaceful, quiet as she was, yet Peter
woulld abuse her, spit in her face, kick.

OR years ago this preparation was an ex-
F pcriment. Now the demand for it nearly
equals the consumption of all other hair dyes
in existence. The sale for the first 4 months
of this year has been six times larger than du-
ring the same months of‘ 1855. This shows
that evenoverpuffcd nostrums cannot check
the progress of an article of transcendent mer-
its. Agents in all parts of the United States
have for many months required more of the
Dye than the proprietor was able to furnish.
He has now, however, greatly increased his
manufacturing facilities. and trusts that there
will be no further cause to complain of short
comings. 'l‘he pressure of orders is not a pres-
sure to be regretted, when due preparation has
been made to meet it as is now the case. The
cause of the vast success of the Excelsior Dye,
may be summed up in a few words ; it is the
only article which imparts a color identical
with the natural black or brown ; its effect is
more lasting than that of other Dyes; it is
applied with less trouble, and in a shorter
time. _It does not burn the hair, or discolor
the skin; it improves instead of destroying
the hair, and being carefully prepared under
the personal supervision of the proprietor. It-S
proportions never vary, and the tints it pro-
