but light or candy is preferred, as they

Under date of May 15th, 1854, Professor
Stowe, formerly of Ohio, now of Massachusetts,
well known as an ardent an intelligent friend
of popular education, says :—

1. Webster.is the most: uniformly analogi-
cal and self-consistent.
2. His system falls in mostcompletely with
the tendencies of the language ; and if in any-
tl1ing_he goes beyond present usage it is in the
right direction, and the usage will soon over-

more than any other one. In the United
-sates he is the authority, everywhere,exc.ept-
in Boston, and even there, more than any oth-
er one. In England he has more than any

the most learned and devoted scholar in his
special department that the English knows;
and for this reason, other things being ‘equal,
he deserves the preference.
5. If we would have uniformity, we must
adopt Webster, for he cannot be displaced ;
