information--‘A gentleman arrived in this cit
yesterday, from ilie South, who brings new
confirming -the report that Crockett isa slavei
the mines of Mexico. The letter spoken ofi
the previous accounthad been received by Mr-
Crockett; and hereon, the Hon.,John Crockett
has started to Mexico with a view to regain hi
father's freedom. The whole South is alive Iv‘

Fogmaiv.-—'1‘lie ‘Great Western steamer,
which left Bristol on the 15th ult. arrived in
New York on Sunday morning.
Cotton is represented as having declined :_
shade, and the money market as somewhat ea-
sier. The British government continue their
warlike preparations against the Chinese. Capt.
Elliott. has made an elibrt with the high Com
missioners to allow the assumption of a legal
traffic, but had met with a refusal, and not
only so, but positively forbade the introducing
of British merchandise in American or other
vessels. Orders have been issued by the gov-
ernment of England for making reprtsals or-
Chinese commerce.
Sir James Graham introduced in the House of
Commons a resolution censoring the rrlililslr‘
for their conduct in reference to China. A
warm party debate occurred, which occupied
the sittings for several days, when a division
was had, and the resolution rejected by a ma-
jority of ten.

troduced a resolution at a federal convention ~-

Extract, of a private letter from Hamilton,
Ohio, dated March, 23rd.
“The cause of Harrison and Reform
goes bravely on in Ohio, and, indeed
throughout the entire \Vest. That we will
carry Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois,
by large majorities, there remains not now
the slightest shadow of a doubt} Such en-
thusiasm as pervades the whole VVest has
never been witnessed before. The farmers
are with us. The mechanics are with us.-—
Age and experience are with us. Youth
and enterprize are with us. Merchants and
professional men are with us. The press is
‘with us. The hurrah-boys are with us ;
and the ladies (God bless them!) do not
cease to evince their sympathy in the good
use, as they wave us on to victory.”
New'i,_S'tca.7n Vessal.—Experiments are in
the course of being tried with the model of
an entirely new form of steam vessel, and, as
far as they have yet gone, with every pros-
pect of a successful result. At present we
can only state of this remarkable invention,
that there are no paddel-wheels, nor external
~works ofany kind. The whole machinery
is in the hold ofthe vessel, where a horizon-
tal wheel is moved by the power of steam,
and, acting upon a currentof water admitted
by the bow and thrown off by the stern, pro-
pels the mass at a rapid rate. By a very
simple contrivaricc of stop-cocks, &c. on the
apparatus, the steamer can be turned on ei-
ther course, retardcd, stopped, or have her
motion reversed. This will be literally a
revolution in the art of steam-navigation.-—
Liverpool paper.
Cotton:-A Natchez paper says, the Bri-
tish Government appropriated sixty thou-
sand dollars for the purpose of obtaining tl.e
necessary information, machinery, and oper-
atives, for improving the cultivation of cotton
in British India. An English agent sent to
visit Mississippi and Louisiana, has succeed-
ed in hiring eight Mississippians and one
Louisianian, who are to proceed without de-
lay to India, and on- their arrival there, take
charge each one of a cotton plantation,
which may serve as models for those of the
natives. These Americans are to carry
with them cotton gins, as well as plantation
tools and husbandry, of the most approved
patterns known or used in the United States.
The U. S. Ship VVarren arrived at Pen-
sacola after a. five months’ cruise off the 25
north part of Cuba.
We understand there will bean effort
made at the ensuing session of the Legisla-
.ture, to change the mode of appointing the
Clerks of the House of Representatives. It
has been the custom, as our readers well
ls-now, to take these officers from among.the
members; and the consequence has been,
that in attending to their duties‘ as Clerks
they have neglected those which devolved
upon them as Legislators. We are not a-
. were that the Legislature of any other State
in the Union subjects its members to serve
i-n this capacity, and the arguments for dis-
continuing the practice here, are so obvious
and weighty, that we thing their justness
will be seen and acknowledged by all who
examine the matter.
There is another subject worthy the atten-
tion of the Legislature-—that of printing‘.-
In our opinion it would be for the interest of
the State, if the Legislature should, among
its first acts, elect a printer, as is the custom
in other States. We believe their work
‘would be done cheaper, better, and with
greater dispatch, if this course should be a-
dopted.

good size. dirty appearance, bob tails, without
horns, marked C. N. in black on the side, with
younglanibs. The half bloods had lambs of
very forward growth, bob tails, one with small
horns, and a deep wattle or loose skin hanging
frotn the neck. The other had less wattle, no
horns, but otherwise similar. They were all
fettered with leather.
Also in another company, 9'other full bloods,
2 of which were wethers—sonie with lambs,
and others in a state of forwardness—diriy, bob
tailed, marked and fettered as the first lot. As
they were raised in Duchess County, N. Y. it
is supposed they have gone that way. Any por-
soo who will return said Sheep, or give infor-
tnatton ofthem to the subscriber, will be reason-
