that a child aged about ten years, the daugh-
ter of Mr. ,Abraham VVelch, who resides
about ten,riiiles in the forest, north of Lake
Pleasant, was torn in pieces, and almost en-
tirely devoured, by a panther of the largest
' size ‘on Monday week. ' The child was play-
ing on the banks of a small stream, within
sight and hearing of the house, when the
anther sprang from a low thicket of hem-
-lbck,’ and seized her by the neck, and after
dragging her into the thicket, proceeded to
devour her at leisure. The mother of the
little girl had gone to a spring a few_ rods
below thehouse, forthe purpose of obtaining
a pail of vvater, and she returned just in time
to see the_ monster leap the creek with the
last remaining litnb of her daughter dangling
