The state made a grant of land to ministers who would go in- to these new settlements and build up a church, and he received this grant of land on which he put up a log house, but he only lived a few years afterwards. The following is taken from an In Memoriam written for a local paper by one who had the pleasure of a personal acquaintance: Mr. Newton Reed was born on the picturesque and fertile farm near Amenia Union where his father, Ezra Reed, also passed his life and to which his grandfather, Eliakim Reed, came in 1773. He, the subject of this sketch, outlived all his contemporaries here ; but mere length of days gives but very slight claim's to our interest. There are those with whom the ebb of a century leaves no fertile growth, whose sands of life run on with no golden grains intermixed, and with whom the attainment of unusual age has little to show for the period of its span. The vast changes which society and the ways of living have undergone during that period have been studied by few with more intelligence and philosophical insight. His taste for historical research was early developed and it made him in later years of leisure an authority in such matters. Genealogical and antiquarian research became a special, and, to some extent, an ab- sorbing pursuit with him. He was a man peculiarly sensitive to all the old ties of association, — those mystic threads which knit us to the past with kindred and places. The roving instinct the sundering of establish- ed associations and ignoring of our indebtedness to the past, so often cited against us as a people, had no sympathy from him. His remarkably long service as deacon in the South Amenia Church should be mentioned, he having been chosen to that office at the age of twenty.
