Y., in 1808; there was only a marked trail from Port Henry up to the place he cleared up. He made a cover of some kind and went to work clearing up the land, cutting down the trees, and burning them ; then sowed grain then went back to Pawlet, Vt. In the fall he went back to Moriah, N. Y., cut the grain and made a log house. Lumbering was the business of this town until about 40 years ago, iron ore mining then became the leading business, and now logs are cut as soon as grown, and most lumber used in town is imported from Canada.
