Guy Carleton Read (6) was named after Sir Guy Carleton, Governor- General of Canada, who on Dec. 31, 1775, defended Quebec against the attack of the Continental Army under General Montgomery, who fell in the battle. He went to Canada with his father "a babe in arms." When older, he was chosen by his grandfather, Moses Reed, to live with him and the old farm was given to him, on which his descendants are still ( 1908) living. He was present and took part in the battle of Chrys- ler's farm on the St. Lawrence River, just above the head of the Long Sault Rapids, where on Nov. 11, 1813, the American Army, under Gen. Wilkinson, was defeated. He was industrious, energetic, and upright ; a successful farmer living and dying on the farm given to him by his grandfather. His first wife was a sister of the late Hon. Wm. Buell Richards, Chief Justice of Canada, Deputy Governor of the Domin- ion during the absence of Lord Duflferin. 275. GENERATION VI. He settled in Augusta and County of Greenville. Held office many years of Justice of the Peace ; prominent member of Church of England. Copy of page in old Bible — now (1907) in possession of A. E. Read of Ottawa — late of Merrickville, — furnished by Rev. Wm. Ashley Read of Ottawa. Janet Read died Saturday Feb. 18, 1832, aged 36 years, 9 months, 7 days. H. C. Harper was married to J. L. Read Julv 23, 1835; died in June 1836. Ann Miller was married to J. L. Read Sept. 12, 1837; died July 31, 1845, aged 29 }ears. Fred A. Read was born Oct. 2, 1840, at Merrick- ville. He at different times engaged in var- ious kinds of business.
