He re- moved to New Canaan, Conn., 1803, and to New York City, 1813, and became a successful merchant and real estate capitalist. His wife, Maria Brown, was a native of New York City. Her father was Jacob Brown, a lineal descendant of Anneke Jans (Bogardus), famous as the owner of the Trinity Church property in the city of New York under the dominion of the Dutch. 231. Reed (6) was born in the ancestral home of the Norwalk Reeds, at Five Mile River, and lived there until his marriage at the age of about thirty-four years ; when he removed to the house near by, which had been the ancestral home of his mother. He was a man of retiring disposition, sterling qualities, and upright life, which won the respect, and confidence of those with whom he came in contact, and made him a safe adviser, and a friend to be depended upon. 248. Walter Burr Reed (6) was born and brought up on the Reed Farm, the old home of his first American ancestor, John Reed. He lived there until the age of 18 years, learned the trade of carpentry in South Norwalk. After the death of his father, John Reed, he lived again at the home of his birth. Later he built a house near by the old place, and lived there twenty- five years. He sold his rights in the old homestead, reserving the ground for six feet around the grave of his honored ancestor, John Reed, first, now marked by a suitable stone at Five Mile River, now known as Brookside. 249 Sarah Frances Reed (6).
